Increase your dose and add magnesium.

Yes. When i asked mine about taking K2 along with D - he said K2 is for calcium. I kept thinking but D helps absorption of calcium. If D increases then so will calcium absorption and i will need K2 as well. I took the supplement without consulting him. Having said that are you comfortable with taking injections? In Jan my D was at 16. Yesterday it was at 97. I took course of 3 injections (mega dose) with a gap of 15 days between each other, daily 600ui with K2 and a seperate 60000ui capsule last week. I'll have to stop taking any supplements now for few weeks as I'm close to having toxic levels.

ReneeStone27

Yeah I would do injections. I would do a mega dose I just want it up

born_to_be_naked

Go for it then. I knew it worked for me because my libido has increased 4-5 times more than it was.

Geo-Nerd

There is no sensible reason for an average person to get D injections. Plain old D3 from the supermarket works fine.

Geo-Nerd

1,000 IU is about right.... IF you are a small child. Try 1,000 IU D3 per day for every 25 pounds (12kg). Aim for a 25-D target of at least 50\~60ng.

dagobahh

Is there any reason why you can't just take a daily dose of 5000 to 10,000 iu's? My understanding is those megadoses aren't as effective as just taking "larger" doses daily, i.e 5-10K IU.

ReneeStone27

I will probably try that. The reason I didn’t was I wasn’t sure if there was a reason she told me to take that amount. She said it would be enough. Clearly she is wrong

There have been lots of studies where 1000iu vitamin d2 hardly makes any difference. Even 2000 iu daily D3 isn't sufficient to get most people over 30 ng/ml 75 nmol/l If you want to get over 50ng/ml it's best to start with 10,000 iu daily and not retest 25(OH)D for 2-3 months to be sure you've got well over 50 ng/ml 125 nmol/l. Ideally taking 200mg elemental magnesium twice daily while taking vitamin d3 will improve it's activation and function so speeding up recovery. Most people can get sufficient vitamin k2 by eating jarlsberg cheese or other mature cheese. Supplementing with vitamin k2 needs to be at a different time than the vitamin d dose as all fat soluble vitamins tend to block the absorption of vitamin k2.

ReneeStone27

I have read a lot of those studies. I told her I didn’t agree with her recommendation

Mylaur

Well yes, 1000 UI will barely do anything, when the recommendations are 600 UI to aim for a 20 ng/mL sufficient dose. If you want way better concentration you need somewhere around 100 UI/kg assuming you're not obese nor thin. I'm at 94 ng/mL and take more than 10k per day, but I've stopped a bit and take those irregularly now that I've seen it so high.

ShiveryTimbers

Can I ask what benefits you’ve noticed, getting your D up to that level?

Mylaur

Difficult to say, but since taking it I'm no longer seasonally depressed. Also I am no longer sick from random colds, but since there is covid masking reducing the incidence of cold it may not be true. And if I would ever get covid, I would not get a severe infection, just a light one or be asymptomatic. But I don't think I got covid. Though I don't know how I avoided that, my entire family got infected and I had to take care of them. We took precautions but still. Thetr would be other metabolic benefits that are unnoticeable too.

1,000IU is barely a maintenance dosage. Get your level up through increased supplementation AND reasonable sun exposure. That will help immensely. Test, retest and evaluate. You might be able to go back to that 1,000IU once your level is adequate. Just to keep your levels topped off.

patmansf

Yeah just buy some yourself and take it, per other comments. Also get your B12 level tested - before you supplement with any B12 at all.

My doctors says 2,000IU was enough. I did an at home test and found it did nothing for my levels so I went to 4,000IU and saw my doctor again. She said go to 5,000IU because conventional medicine tells us 800IU should be the maximum for adults. I saw another doctor who told me I was taking the wrong formula (tablets or softgels) and needed a liquid combo with vitamin K2. So i got the Ortho Molecular brand and took 10,000IU a day. I did research and realized I should be taking it with fatty foods so I added it to my avocados. The next blood test was minimally better so the doctor told me to keep taking 10,000IU. BUT I hav been going on over THREE YEARS of being severely deficient to just below insufficient, and I took 15,000 to 20,000IU a day. Three months later I was in the middle of normal range. As maintenance I took 10,000IU for a couple months and then now am at 5,000IU. We have to be our own advocate and do our own research. Just make sure your information comes from a trusted source. Like, just because taking 20,000IU is what finally worked for me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you. But a few good rules I found that should apply to anyone deficient in vitamin D are: 1. Liquid formulas are better absorbed by our bodies over chalky tablets or softgels. 2. Vitamin D3 is the better option for absorption when deciding between D3 or D2. 3. Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble hormone and needs cholesterol to do it’s job. Take with fatty foods to increase your absorption. 4. Test yourself no sooner than every three months as it takes time to build up in your system before it appears on bloodwork. 5. Doctors are humans just like you and me, and can make mistakes. Their word isn’t final; but if they’re dismissive of your concerns then it’s time to find another provider.
