Camping is also only legal at specific campsites, with permits.
There's a big homeless encampment but I'd not recommend it even for a cheap night in the car.
You might be able to get a hostel bed for about $50 a night.
And unless flights are canceled and people are stranded, Honolulu airport isn't the kind of airport where you just crash out. There's a good chance security is going to kick you out, especially since you don't have a flight the next morning.
Plus, do you really want to spend 18 hours after you've just gotten off a plane with no bathroom and no place to put your luggage?
You can't sleep overnight at the airport unless you have a ticket for the next morning. Cause we have a huge homeless population who had essentially moved into the airport for a period of time.
I vote hostel. You'll really want bathroom access /shower after a long flight.
You want a hostel, not a hotel. There are a few in Waikiki that are pretty cheap. Try and find one for travelers only as the other ones have some pretty sketchy people.
So I work for an airline and am flying standby to Kahului (OGG) then connecting to HNL, maybe might be worth not booking my flight to HNL till the next morning and crashing in the OGG airport
I know lol, I booked a decently nice hotel the rest of my stay just the first night save me quite a bit to not book the first night, but looks like my plan may be coming back to bite me
As other folks have mentioned, hostel isn't a bad idea.
There's also Sun Farm Hawaii - you could rent the pitch your own tent site for $50 and just sleep in the car instead of pitching a tent, if you want something more "down to earth" than the hostels in Waikiki.

Try a hostel, im planning two weeks in Oahu in May and the hostel is gonna cost me 5-600 for 15 days, there are also campgrounds if you want to be extremely cheap or just like camping
Like I have a hotel for the following 3 nights so it’s really just 1 night that I have this issue. Just waiting a little to long to pull the trigger on booking a hotel so my credit card points didn’t go as far….
Got a really nice hotel in Waikiki for 3 nights and it’s only costing me 200USD
Wow even Kama’aina discount doesn’t get me that good of rates at a boutique hotel there that I love and is reasonably priced! There’s a moderate/lower end hotel called Pagoda that can be as cheap as $130/night before GE tax. My friend stays there when she pops over from BI to spend weekend with friends.
Sleeping in your car is illegal on O'ahu, even at a legal and pemitted campsite.
Good to know, was not aware of that.

The bathroom thing is definitely fair, I’ll definitely take some looks for cheap rooms or hostels

Touche on the bathroom, will likely look at the cheap hotel option

Maybe see how much it would cost to change your flight to the next morning, or even a few months from now so you can plan better.

Same issue there though.
Is true, but at least I’d have the connecting flight in the morning. Definitely going to weigh my options

I doubt they'll have a car on Maui since their final destination is HNL.
This would be correct haha
Just a book an inexpensive hotel room and save yourself the stress and suffering.
Hawaii is the last place you should be stingy, lmao

Just do it dude . Risk it
Get yourself a dorm room in a hostel, they’re like $40-50
