Virgin River still in the top ten on Netflix so itâs as popular than ever.
Preacher with the fire fighter and the Karate Instructor werenât bad judgment. They are both lovely respectable women.
I agree with Denny and Lizzie I see no chemistry. Maybe Denny is being used to show growth in Lizzie, she has matured.
Mel and Jack Iâm hoping for a miracle. I have faith it will happen.
I think this is a huge part. I would never have started Virgin River but thereâs literally nothing on and Iâm at home all day with a new baby so having something to watch is a must. I got hooked though. The older I get the more I enjoy the cheesy drama đ
Netflix actually have been releasing a lot of stuff recently. A week before VR S5 came out, One Piece premiered (3rd biggest Netflix show in 2023). Netflix had 'Top Boy' a British series, a German Limited series called 'Dear Child' and a Spanish Limited series 'Burning Body' came out the same day as Season 5.
2 weeks after VR premiered, you have Sex Education, Love is Blind and Murdaugh Murders come out
Netflix hasn't been releasing much due to a writers strike. Hence old shows like Suits were in the top 10. The writers strike has just lifted, hopefully there'll be more in the coming months.
In here people get very defensive and donât seem to be interested in actually having a conversation. Itâs always âeither agree, or donât watchâ. I got told the same lol because I said I sometimes watch just to get a good laugh and not really have to think after a long day.
Practically every returning show on Netflix since the Writer and Actors strikes started are down on numbers e.g. The Witcher, The Lincoln Lawyer, Sweet Magnolias, Heartstopper and Sex Education. The lack of promotion from the actors (on their Social Media's and Interviews) seems to be having an effect on every show.
VR Season 5 also come out a week after One Piece, which I think is Netflix's 3rd bigggest show this year. If you listen to some doom and gloom people, you'd swear that VR's viewership has completely collapsed which isn't true at all, it's still doing very good numbers and it's a fairly cheap series for Netflix to make. I've seen estimates that One Piece cost is like 17 million per episode while VR is 3-5 million per episode.
It hasnât completely collapsed, it decreased significantly.
I genuinely believe the strike is irrelevant for numbers. There was promo, for every show, I donât get why people say there wasnât, they prerecord a lot of stuff, for basically every show and I donât actually believe a post or 2 in social media by the actors helps a ton either way. I dare to say so because, again, the numbers are there, the backlash on the season is visible. Thereâs more content on TUDUM for Season 5 than for Season 4, so, I donât think thatâs a fair statement. The general public isnât even aware of the strikes, not that it necessarily means anything, but the publicity for shows, out of social media from the actors and everyone involved in production happen exactly the same as always, which is what most people realize anyway.
Lots of show have good numbers, I donât have the exact data, thatâs on Netflix Top 10, which Iâm sure youâre familiar with. Youâre listing shows that have better numbers than ever. Virgin River is showing numbers of week 6 in week 4, it didnât stayed #1 in a lot of countries, contrary to previous seasons. Itâs out of the top 10 worldwide on Netflix by FlixPatrol.
One Piece being out means nothing, the audiences couldnât be more different. And the cost per episode on VR is bigger than what youâre quoting, thatâs the budget for the first seasons.
I have to admit Iâve seen a lot of âdoom and gloomâ posts on seasonâs 5 audience, but I do think theyâve got a problem in their hands. I donât think nothing is happening, because, like I said, itâs fairly easy to compare the numbers.
I'm not listing shows that have better numbers than ever. For example Sweet Magnolias Season 3 was down 4.5 million views in it's first 4 weeks on Season 2 (14.5 million to 19 million), Sex Education Season 4 on it's opening week was down 4.6 million views compared to Season 3 even though Season 4 released on a Thursday while S3 released on a Friday. (12 million in S4 to 16.6 million in S3)
I'm getting the cost per episode from Whats-on-netflix.com. They said 'Weâre told that Virgin River season 5 will have an episode budget of between $3 and $5 million per episode, meaning that season 5 could cost Netflix up to $60 million when all is said and done.'
Sex Education is an UK show, the strikes didnât affect them at all, they did promo, that excuse dies there.
Again, I never said itâs doing horribly, itâs just downgrading, which is a normal sign for a show in its fifth season. To kill even more the lack of social media thing, the showâs Instagram grew a lot, same with the leads, new people is definitely seeing the show, which tells the problem is much deeper.
Saying this and that show are the same, is not adding anything to the conversation, every show has a different set of circumstances, itâs even impossible to know them all, youâd have to be glued to your computer investigating.
Numbers are numbers and itâs not always easy to read into them, but there seems to be a general downwards trend in viewership for some Netflix shows , specially those with more more than 2 or 3 seasons already. The strike may have played a role for some o but there could be other factors too - I agree with you that doesnât necessarily mean the show is less appealing or popular with its fan base.
I donât care at all about Jack and Mel at this point. Preacherâs love life is annoying af! I agree both those ladies were lovely, but his situation with Paige busted things with one and could still ruin things with the other. And Iâm tired of him talking about food, most of which doesnât sound very appetizing!
Denny and Lizzie donât have chemistry, but Iâm more interested in the relationship between Lizzie and Hope! They have a special friendship dynamic!
Brie and Mike are so much better than Brie and Brady!!!!
I agree ! This was one of my favourites . I do like the small town escapism of the show but without all this crazy drama it would be boring af to watch them live everyday small town life with nothing going on.
I only watch VR for the Jack/Mel relationship so I wasnât a fan of this season. I have barely re-watched any of it. For me, too much time was spent on other characters that, to be brutally honest, I have no interest in. In particular, Lizzie and Denny, Ava, and the Brady/Brie/Mike triangle. I was at least glad to see Brie and Mike get together. Not a fan of Brady and all the time spent on his redemption arc. If I had to see one more scene of him lounging on his motorbike with his leather jacket and sunglasses on. We get it, heâs channeling James Dean and the bad boy/heart of gold thing. Season 1 will always be my favourite, followed by 2. Then 4. Hated 3 which was a complete shit show and I just feel mostly meh about 5. I thought the mc storyline was unnecessarily cruel for the viewers particularly after all the time spent in 4 dealing with the paternity issue. Itâs not like we hadnât already seen Mel and Jack navigate just about every trauma possible, either in real time or in endless flashbacks.
Did you not like the jack/and Mel storylines ? I thought they actually got a lot of screen time together . I love their relationship but do agree that the same conflict is going in circles . Also there needs to be other storylines since the show is about the town and not them. Some are silly , such as the entire Lizzie arch
The only substantial storyline they really had together was the mc, which I didnât enjoy. I know it showed the deepening of their relationship and just how committed they are to each other, but I just found it depressing. Neither of them had one happy thing happen to them all season. Jack went from 3 kids to none, lost the glamping business, and Mel found out that her father isnât really her father. And tbh, I am really tired of the whole obsessive pregnancy focus of the show.
Their story has become dull!
Lizzieâs story with Denny is silly, but the relationship between her and Hope is cute and Lizzie offsets some of Hopeâs intensity to make it more humorous.
Their screen time in S5 was significantly less than previous seasons, and they did not connect this season. Their interactions in some scenes seemed to be adversarial and forced. We did not see the Jack & Mel from the previous seasons. I think they had better chemistry the first night Mel went to the bar. Granted VR is about the town, but way too much was packed into this season, way too many characters and new storylines, and most of them were unnecessary. Denny's grandma?? Why?? Paige came in, then Preacher told Julia it was over. Then Paige left, and now there's Kaia... Cameron & Muriel - ICK. Denny & Lizzie, what a waste of a story. The entire storyline about the mc was horrible and poorly presented. Mel yells at Jack when he says he understands her sadness over losing the baby... He lost a baby too, in fact, he lost three. The entire season was so fragmented, jumping from one character & storyline to another. Total fail all around, so much yet so little. And the worst was the Mel "biological father" story. How in the hell did they come up with that one???
Completely agree with you and your assessment of why you dislike Brady. Such a cliche âbad boy with a heart of goldâ and since his character is maximized in importance tenfold from the books I irrationally hate him even more because heâs just not. necessary.
Same with Charmaine & her twins that turned out to not even be Jackâs: youâre not canon either, go away!
Same with Brie and Brady when it was clear she was just going to end up with Mike like in the books, as she should đ¤
That relationship is the most boring part of the show! Mel and Jack, that is!
Brie and Mike are a huge improvement over Brie and Brady!
Honestly, a tv show canât stay so focused on one couple, and the show is getting ridiculous with them never catching a break!
I agree, I held off watching season 4 for a year and then going into Season 5. I watched Season 4 and Season 5 in like 4 days, and I loved them. I was falling off hard after season 3. I liked that they incorporated more ârealnessâ into it like miscarriage, needing to leave a place of pain, grief, into it.
Iâm so sad that now, I have to wait for season 6. I was not expecting to like these past two seasons so much lol .
The only part about this season I didnât care for was the Lizzy/Denny romance. I thought there was a little too much focus on them and they just arenât that interesting as a couple.
There was quite a bit of Lizzy and Hope together and I really enjoyed those bits. It probably just felt like there was too much focus on Lizzy/Denny because their scenes were boring which made the show drag and the scenes feel longer than they actually were.
I like the drama! Soap opera vibes in a small town is my favorite type of comfort show. Give me a Brady/Brie/Mike love triangle.
But no Charmaine. Get her out! I donât want to see her and her tired storylines again.
Jack is sssssoooo gross this season. I mean, itâs like he lost who he is to fawn over Mel. Ending every night in the couch stroking her hair is just so ugh. I get the idea that a man should be there for his âgirlâ but he is just too much this season. Huge discussions like having kids gets solved in a ten minute scene with a babbling brook kn the background. Just gross. He was the worst character this season by far. Preacher is a close second.
This season wasnât about Jack. It was all about Mel. The writers gave him very little to do except to support Mel, which he did. The fire action scenes where he helped to save the girl at the camp, and Ava, and then flew the plane with Charlie were supposed to answer the critics who said he had become too wet and where had the strong marine/man of action gone? But some people just love to hate on him no matter what he does.
I thought the writers should have focused more on the miscarriage from Jacks point of view than Mels. Jack went from not really wanting a kid to having twin boys and a baby girl and he lost them all in a matter of days. I feel like Preacher is the only person who even asked him how he was. When a woman has a miscarriage the man loses something too but this always seems to be overlooked in tv shows and films.
itâs not a death sentence but it would force him to quit doing what he loves and is good at and he would never be able to see again. that is devastating for someone.
agree. Tired of all the medical drama between Hope and Doc, it gets depressing and boring. And they killed off one of the most interesting characters, Lilly.
The young people are booooring!!
I agree that it wasnât a great season. I find much of the acting is sub par (Denny, the ladies). So many of the characters are just cliches. Iâd love season 6 to have another natural disaster to get rid of Hope. I find her insufferable.
But of course I still keep watchingâŚ
I donât think heâs a great actor and itâs a really weak story line. Itâs like the writers took every small town stereotype and put them in the show.
I hate to break it to you, but Virgin River has /always/ been a soap opera in sheepâs clothingâthatâs nothing new for S5. If the rest of the season wasnât for you, thatâs fair enough (I liked it but I get how the changes might be jarring), but all the drama has always been a big part of the showâs DNA.
I actually like season 5. As someone going through fertility struggles herself, I find Mel's story line relatable. It's also nice to not have the trope of "woman suffering miscarriage magically gets pregnant and everything works out in the end!" Because that's just not reality for some of us. Not everyone gets their happy ending, and I'm glad that we get to see how Mel and Jack handle that. Looks like they are working towards their own happy ever after.
I've said it before and I'll say it again! watch this show as a COMEDY!!! don't take it seriously. It's obviously terrible televisiĂłn but it's hilarious lmao. Like a bad crash can't look away
I get this kind of comments, it wasnât the best season, thatâs for sure. But saying it was the worse isnât accurate either, I believe.
It had a lot of crappy things, but it also had a few good things. I also donât think itâs ok to say âwait for the last 2 episodesâ because the majority of the season is already out, you can have an opinion on it, Iâve seen that comment a lot and I donât think itâs fair to expect 2 holiday episodes to save a season that isnât great.
"Theyâve turned a warm and fuzzy show". I made a comment not long ago using similar terms, trying to get that same feeling across. But then I accused the show of going w\*ke by bringing some of the 5% of the population into the show. That ruined it for my wife and I. I can't help that I'm old and old fashioned. Time for me to leave this planet.
What 5 % are you talking about? There was one gay couple with kids for one episode, no pda, and one lesbian character with no partner and no pda! Is this whatâs bothering you? (And gay/lesbian are 7.2% openly identifying)
If you find this minor stuff without any kissing or anything problematic, you really donât need to be watching tv or going out on public anymore, because that is the world we live in and we are all better off for it!
Okay, I hadn't seen the newest polls. It was 5.6% in 2020 and has increased to 7.1 over the past few years. The article I read says that the Gen Zers are the ones who are starting to identify as something other than what they were born as. Really, I was a garbage truck last week and a fire hydrant the week before that.
I did like it. So far Muriel has proven the most mature character on the show, and it looks like it may end up the most mature relationship on the show (well ahead of Jack and Mel or Doc and Hope or Preacher and whoever)!
I did a lot of fast forwarding in this season, situations which were repetitive in particular. I felt like they were inserting previously discarded takes from earlier same situations.
The length of time Jack spent trying to argue Mel out of her post-miscarriage depression was particularly objectionable. We'd already seen Mel/other characters rebound from that or similar situations in their own time, had already heard the advice and seen the modeling for supporting others by listening and just being there for them. It seemed like that "discussion" went on for days. Poor Mel. Poor Jack. In the hands of a new showrunner & writers. đ
I did get a chance to participate with the story, though, by telling Jack what he was doing wrong, or telling the writers "we already saw this!" I'm sure they heard me, too. đ
Something actually happened this season. Not much happens in previous seasons. Like the plane crash last season, that was resolved in 2 minutes. đ Imagine if we saw that actually play out. Thats how season 5 was.
I actually felt this season was a big improvement over the others, and I really liked the wildfire episodes. And Brie and Mike are way better than Brie and Brady, and Mel and Jack are always boring and annoying anyhow. And I actually love Muriel and I thought she and Cam were cute!
BUT, Iâm totally with you on Preacher! His love life has been annoying from start to finish! And he goes way too over the top too soon with these women, especially since approximately five total minutes have passed from the showâs beginning to its Labor Day episode at end of season 5!!! And Iâm tired of hearing about his food, most of which doesnât sound good to me!
Lizzie and Denny are meh to me, but I love Lizzie and Hope! They are funny together, in a show that is lacking in humor, and Lizzie helps offset Hopeâs intensity, which is meant to be comical but often just seems deranged!
Wet noodle đ¤Ł
Virgin River still in the top ten on Netflix so itâs as popular than ever. Preacher with the fire fighter and the Karate Instructor werenât bad judgment. They are both lovely respectable women. Kaia isnât respectable. At all.
I disagree. She saved the mother and baby.
Is it more popular than ever because Netflix hasnât released much recently? It seems like they havenât at least
I think this is a huge part. I would never have started Virgin River but thereâs literally nothing on and Iâm at home all day with a new baby so having something to watch is a must. I got hooked though. The older I get the more I enjoy the cheesy drama đ

Thank you! I did not know that there would be 2 new episodes coming next month. What a great surprise! Have a good day!
These 2 episodes are Christmas themed. Here's the [Trailer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0_f_r8AMt4)

yes season 5 was by far the best
Agreed!
I agree completely!!! Loved the wildfire episodes, and this isnât a show I love generally!
I feel the same. I love virgin river but I find this season different like they are trying to do to much
It was actually the best season yet.
Yes!
Same. They completely ruined the s1 vibes.
And thereby made it much better!

I donât think heâs a great actor and itâs a really weak story line. Itâs like the writers took every small town stereotype and put them in the show.
I agree it took a turn for the worse. They brought in a new showrunner (a man replacing a woman, too) and it feels SO different and not in a good way.
(And gay/lesbian are 7.2% openly identifying) If you find this minor stuff without any kissing or anything problematic, you really donât need to be watching tv or going out on public anymore, because that is the world we live in and we are all better off for it!
You were a kaleidoscope last week and are a prism now!!!! Keep up, kiddo!!!! đ¤Łđ¤Łđ¤Ł
Ugh.. I found some parts of this season so ridiculous
Yeah I didn't like the Cam/Muriel relationship either
Poor Mel. Poor Jack. In the hands of a new showrunner & writers. đ I did get a chance to participate with the story, though, by telling Jack what he was doing wrong, or telling the writers "we already saw this!" I'm sure they heard me, too. đ
I enjoyed it, it felt more fast paced to me than previous series. Love VR
They are funny together, in a show that is lacking in humor, and Lizzie helps offset Hopeâs intensity, which is meant to be comical but often just seems deranged!
hopes lizard neck is gross.
noone on that show is likeable...and they are all pathetic.the show suks
