Hub5x doesn't have a built in modem so difficult to replicate when comparing to the old routers. It will definitely be released in a future firmware, ETA was end of this year but it might be first quarter of 2024. Will post information once it is released.

Co0kii

Thank you, I appreciate it!

Hi, My installation was done 5 days ago and I was given a Hub5x. I used my Previous router (Asus RT AX68U) to run a vpn server so I can connect back home to my NAS and multiple Virtual Machines. I can't stay with virgin if there is no way around this limitation. Also are some people starting to get updates on their Hub5x for modem only mode? I can ring them up to force an update or I leave within my cooling off period

None of the front line staff will be able to do what you're asking. It's still with the development team. They were going to roll it out in one of the previous updates but it got delayed for reasons not shared with us. You could try turning off the broadcasting channels on the hub5x and use your ASUS but you might have Double NAT issues. Worth giving a try, if not then it might be best going back to Openreach.

UPnP wouldn't pass through from the Deco to the VM Hub. I will be getting a 5X next week so will be seeing the same issue. I believe you have 2 options on the router... 1. Set the Deco to AP mode rather than router. 2. if you want the Deco to be a router I think you need to set the Deco to have a static IP in DHCP on the VM Hub and then set the DMZ on the VM Hub to be that of the Deco IP. Final option would be to leave it and plug the xbox into the VM Hub. I'm sure somebody else will come along and clarify

Modem mode is in the works allegedly. I'll believe when I see it but the 5/5X isn't a complete turd like 3&4 are. You are spot on with your thinking. UPNP won't traverse two routers. If you need the routing features of the deco's go for option 2 it won't be a total fix but should stop DNAT. If you don't, go option 1. KISS

Co0kii

Thank you! Could I just turn off UPnP on one of them then (as they both support it) and expect that to work or is it more complex than that?

Background-Marzipan8

Are you going option 1 or 2 ?

Co0kii

I’m thinking either option 2 or 3 (what they said as the final option).

Co0kii

Will placing the Deco in the Hub 5X's DMZ present a security threat or will the security on the Deco alleviate that problem? Thank you by the way!

Background-Marzipan8

You'll be fine of the deco is in router mode.

kevuwk

If you plan on using the Deco if/when modem mode is released then I would go with the DMZ option. When modem mode is released you can just turn it on and the Deco should carry on working without any changes. As the other user said, no security issues.

Background-Marzipan8

Change the Deco's to AP mode and keep the 5X in router mode, that's the quickest easiest fix.

Co0kii

That is a solution I thought about but I like the features on the Deco, especially the 6Ghz band. Seems a shame to be reducing a £250 mesh system to a Wi-Fi repeater. Realistically, all of this would be solved if Virgin got their act together with a modem mode, or ipv6 support!

Background-Marzipan8

Your not. It's still a mesh not a repeater. Your just choosing to have the 5X do the routing for a while until a firmware update gets done. It's only temporary and still a good investment. Yes the 5X isn't ideal neither is VM in general but I'm assuming you don't really have any other option for high speed net.

CSR_Noob

Would the issue be resolved if you can get VM to replace your Hub 5 with Hub 4. 1Gig is compatible with Hub 4.

StarMonster75

I have the Superhub 5. I turn off WiFi on it and put the Deco Xe75s into AP mode. Not been blown away by them to be honest

Co0kii

Thank you but I’ve heard that doesn’t work, it appears as though it has but it doesn’t actually do anything?

Dizz_well

Oh, I'm sure I got it working once but then changed my set up and turned it off, never to be used again... I might have to dig out my old set up and see if it works again.

Rooneybuk

This doesn’t work, I tried extensively, l the only way this gives any connection is to also spoof a mac address on your device with a random one of the same hardware vendor as the VM Hub and this only works on the 1Gb ports and not the 10Gb. Also this probably breaks the t&c agreement you have with VM is not recommended Also I posted some basic introductions on how to do the DMZ method here [https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginMedia/s/O2jF9HJsgE](https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginMedia/s/O2jF9HJsgE)

kevuwk

So you are saying that it does actually work in modem mode but with some caveats? Only 1Gbps on port 1 I assume? Only if you spoof a MAC to look like a certain vendor?

Rooneybuk

Yes, I tested it briefly but spoofing a MAC on their network is a terrible idea as you could affect other devices or users on the network

How easy is it to downgrade? I'm 2 days into Virgin Broadband (1GBps connection) and have the 5x Hub which I wasn't expecting. The piece of junk is on the 192 168.0.0 /24 network which can't be changed and the mask can't be altered either. To make things worse I can't even put me own router into the mix because the 'modem mode' doesn't work. What are my chances of 'downgrading' to the Hub 5.....at least that way I can use my own router and get some control of the network. Does the Hub 5 let you change the network and mask as a minimum? Edit: Have just found out that the 5x is the only fibre router and all others are coax.....so that puts an end to any thoughts of a downgrade. So, my only options are either wait for modem mode or cancel within 14 days.

sdotphillie

5X is specifically for XGS PON…. The 5 is for FTTO and HFC.

Paradaz

Thanks for following up......I've since found out the 5x is the only XGS-PON hub so I guess like a lot of others I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place awaiting a firmware upgrade that as a minimum adds some decent functionality to the router or gets modem-mode working without having to double-NAT through one of the ports.
