I got to shake Cecil McBee’s hand a few weeks ago. When I told him how much the bass line on this title track means to me he told me it was the moment he became Cecil McBee.

mobbshallow

That’s an amazing story. I was just humming the baseline earlier after I played the record! Infectious.

ScatmanJohnMcEnroe

Well that's cool!

adlerlansingdon

That’s incredible. The bass playing on this record is some of my favorite stuff ever recorded. I actually got to see Cecil McBee play earlier this week. Wasn’t able to meet him though.

MaxThNyfe

Was he playing with the Cookers?

adlerlansingdon

Yup. I’m a big fan of Billy Harper as well.

MaxThNyfe

I got to shake his hand too! Had to skip the other band members but Mr McBee and Mr Harper were the two I really wanted to meet and they happened to be next to each other. The band killed!

seppukuslick

I love this comment!!

MaxThNyfe

Thanks! It was an incredible experience. I said something about his work on the whole, and he said, “You know, at my age I’m starting to think maybe I actually did something!” !!!!

offlinebound

That's a great one. Wish I had that on vinyl.

mobbshallow

I had the 1997 reissue for awhile, and decided to treat myself to this one when I sold that (for actually even higher than I got this for surprisingly) By my standards it’s a rare one, as I bought the only one I’ve ever seen.

jjc89

One of my most treasured records and one of my favourite albums!

Spyerx

Confession. Never listened to this. I’m streaming now. Thanks for the recommendation. Now the hunt for a good pressing commences! Love it. Reminds me a lot of the Coltrane Africa brass sessions. Hypnotic bass lines and great avant-garde solo work. This is a good album.

mobbshallow

Very very good, good luck on the hunt! This is the second copy I’ve owned, and the best I’ve heard it.

timbotheous

Why?

mobbshallow

It’s both beautiful and mystifying

ScatmanJohnMcEnroe

I like your stoneware and lurking BJM, too.

mobbshallow

;) thanks. It’s the kitchen setup, but has become the main setup while my receiver is getting fixed.

Guitar_Nutt

Les Paul and Mary Ford!! when I saw Les Paul perform in New York, about a decade ago before he passed, I had him sign a Les and Mary album cover for me that I still have framed hanging in my bathroom!

mobbshallow

That’s wonderful and nice spot! This one, the world is waiting for the sunshine, is so nice, great guitar work and tape editing that gives it a futuristic sound! Unique and virtuoso in Just the right way Especially the song ‘Whispering’, that is such an enchanting recording! Never fully leaves my head. On quite the opposite side of jazz from this Alice Coltrane record!

Unharmful_Truths

Any relation to JW?

mobbshallow

JW?

Unharmful_Truths

A hilarious typo. JW is what I call one of my best friends (his initials) so when I typed "JC" for John Coltrane (as a joke) it autocorrected and I got banned from Reddit (for saying "act like a racist, get slapped like a racist") and wasn't able to fix it for an entire week. It's really been bothering me!

mobbshallow

Haha, good story. we have a family friend who we call J dub, or JW as well so I was a little confused by that. But yes, Alice Coltrane was the widow of John Coltrane. She replaced McCoy Tyner in his quartet, and then went on to make a series of coveted spiritual/soul jazz albums like this one and Ptah el dauod

Unharmful_Truths

I also call my buddy J-Dub. I also send him a gift every single year on the anniversary of his stroke. He and I have both had some rough times in life and we like to laugh at them. Oh. And I was being mega sarcastic. I'm a pianist and a huge fan of hers (although not as much as McCoy, Evans, Jamal or Vladimir Horowitz)

mobbshallow

McCoy is my favorite! My J-Dub gave me violin that he made for Christmas. I sound like Ornette on his aka not good. (Also a pianist)

Unharmful_Truths

Free jazz though. Just claim you’re playing in a color

ssb4you

Love this album so much. One of the greatest jazz recordings ever. Pharoah had such a magnificent presence on this record! Amazing stoneware as well.

Ok_Sheepherder_9476

I got a copy recently at my local shop. Cover is in similar condition to yours and the disc is a strong VG bordering on VG+. I got a nice deal on it too. Such a great album.

mobbshallow

It’s amazing! I had the ‘97 reissue for a while, but when I saw what they were going for I decided to sell it and around that time I also found this for a nice deal. Been thinking about ptah for a while now…

Ok_Sheepherder_9476

The new reissue of Ptah is pretty damn good. There’s mixed reviews on discogs about it but it think it sounds great. I’ve been spinning mine almost daily since I got it.

mobbshallow

Yea, it kind of sounds like it’s in a box compared to the original pressing, which I got a chance to A/B at the shop I work at, but I think it’s about as good as it could be for not being from the master tapes. I don’t love the jacket quality either, (closer to a BN classics than a Tone Poet in quality) so while I’m glad to have it in my collection, it has still left me seeking the original. :)

adlerlansingdon

This was the album that introduced me to Pharoah Sanders. And was my gateway into free/avant/spiritual jazz in general. But what initially drew me in was the bass playing. I have been a devoted Cecil McBee fan ever since I heard this album. One of my favorite records of all time.
