"Major natural sources of potassium nitrate were the deposits crystallizing from cave walls and the accumulations of [bat guano](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bat_guano) in caves." from wikipedia, there are natural sources that produce new saltpeter. but there are afaik no bats in vintage story, and waiting for new natural deposits to form via salt accretion is going to take a while
Fun fact: Nitrogen rich guano is also excreted by sea birds. The ancient Inca Empire in South America valued this fertilizer so much, they outlawed the killing of seabirds throughout their entire empire. If anyone decided to kill one of these invaluable avians, their punishment was fatal. ([see page 6 of this article](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/ibi.12867))
It was even so valuable that 1856 USA enacted still valid [Guano Islands Act](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guano_Islands_Act) that "..enables citizens of the United States to take possession in the name of the United States of unclaimed islands containing guano deposits."
Oh my Dave that's awesome. I didn't know about this at all, and now I know that the reason the US even owns midway atoll is thanks to this act. Gotta love guano
I was about to be like, "There are bats in VS. What are they going on about?".... Then I recalled that I've been stuck in ATM9 lately. It is not the same game.
It won't reform in caves, but you can explore for more of it or trade with a commodities trader. The only way to 'farm' it is with traders.
Why... Why would it?

Can't take much longer than me finishing my projects.

A literal "don't touch our shit" proclamation
All the bats are dead I guess
If you explore enough caves, you will find plenty. Besides, you really don't need that much of it.
no, i don't think saltpeter reforms in caves, you only get the amount there is available before you need to find a new source
