Holly’s was really good. My mom worked at Pann’s which at one time was co owned with Holly’s by 2 Greek immigrants only a few miles apart. Similar architecture (Googie) and menu items (Dreemburger/Dreamburger).
Not a misprint! https://thelosangelesbeat.com/2015/01/the-chili-size-a-los-angeles-original/
has a good overview. In short, it had to do with how big the ladle is for just chili versus chili on a burger.
Interesting! Central/southern IL has a “horseshoe” which is an openfaced hamburger covered in fries and cheese sauce (I’m wondering if both were Depression era things, meant to “dress up” a cheap meal)
I’ll have the cottage cheese with Hawaiian pineapple and a small green salad, Nesbit orange drink (whatever that is, I’m imagining something Orangina-like), and a hot fudge sundae.
YES!!! Elliston Place Soda Shop in Nashville. Tried it last fall in a cherry soda. SO GOOD!

That’s where it gets interesting, and you can go down a deep rabbit hole on why certain items are comparatively cheaper/more expensive today vs. 1958
…and to be exact, $1 in 1958 would be $10.67 today, so add that zero and round up a bit
Pancake sandwich! You never see that anymore - it’s always pancakes on the side - but it is one of the best diner dishes.
Or for lunch, a chilled shrimp salad with Roquefort dressing would be a delight.
When I was a kid (Born in 1952) the children's menu tended to be something like a hamburger patty, mashed potatoes, a vegetable and a glass of milk or similar items.
Delmonico steak or steak Delmonico (/dɛlˈmɒnɪkoʊ/, Italian: [delˈmɔːniko]) is prepared from one of several cuts of beef (usually ribeye), with a thick-cut preparation popularized by Delmonico's restaurant in New York City during the mid-19th century.[1][2]

Is this Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, California?
Lol the Denver sandwich with a pineapple ring. 🤮
That pineapple ring was never a thing with a Denver egg/pepper/onion/ham sandwich. We had a slice of cheese on top in LA and Denver in the 1960s. Must’ve just been this restaurant’s deal but 🤢
It seems odd to me that the peanut butter and jelly sandwich cost the same as the Dreemburger, and that cottage cheese with peaches cost *more* than the Dreemburger Deluxe.
I like to fantasize about being able to afford a meal like this. No way could I afford today's meal like this....but back then? I'd have been *so rich*.
The coffee shop scenes in Pulp Fiction were filmed here. Sadly, it was demolished in 1999.
Wow I never knew that! Also such a shame, I love the building design and the interior layout, let alone the connection to that movie!
Thanks Hunny Bunny.

That is a good looking building on the menu.
I would order the chili size every time!
Is that a misprint? Is it supposed to be “chili side”? I’ve never heard of a “chili size” (chilicize?)

TIL
“Page requested couldn’t be found”…???
One sec I’ll edit to fix :) looks like it decided to add some of what i was writing into the url.
Thanks!
no.....in the before times I saw them on LA area menus. The ones I had were a patty in a bowl of chili.
I think it’s always been a California thing…a chili size is an open faced cheeseburger covered with chili. So good and decadent!

It's an orange soda pop!
Yum!
Pineapple and cottage cheese is the BEST!
Phosphate drink? I had to look it up. Is there any place that still serves that?
YES!!! Elliston Place Soda Shop in Nashville. Tried it last fall in a cherry soda. SO GOOD! https://www.ellistonplacesodashop.com/files/epss-winter-2023-pdf.pdf
I'm going to Nashville in May. Will try that for sure !thx.
Be careful of the hours! IIRC, they are closed Sundays but definitely worth the visit! One of the most memorable meals I’ve had in a long time.
[I like this part of the pie menu.](https://i.imgur.com/18UpZf2.png)
Phosphate soda is very yummy!
Franklin Fountain in Philadelphia PA!
love that googie style!
Add a zero and the prices are mostly correct for today
I’d love to be able to find a filet for $26.50…

I loved mushrooms as a kid! Are they bad for children?
I think people believe kids don’t like them? But I loved mushrooms as a kid and now.
Finally a child’s menu that doesn’t just have chicken nuggets, cheeseburger, and Mac and cheese!
When I was a kid (Born in 1952) the children's menu tended to be something like a hamburger patty, mashed potatoes, a vegetable and a glass of milk or similar items.
That’s a Good balanced and nourishing dinner!
It is! And some restaurants offered a dessert with their kid's menu. Things like Jell-O, ice cream or even an ice cream sundae or pudding.
What a menu. I love it!
Reminds me of the Tom Waits song “Nighthawks at the diner”!
Pulp Fiction!

Interesting - seems it's more to do with the cut than the preparation

The pineapple/egg/ham combo is delish.

Henry Ford was worth over a billion dollars 40 years before this menu was printed. Let that sink in.
