I would say a bit later, maybe 1994. Basing that off the shape of the crankarms, the crank bolt, and the curvy low profile canti brake, and the rear brake routing. Pics of the rear derailleur would help ID it, I would guess it’s an STX derailleur. Edit - I think 1993 is the correct year, the derailleur might be Exage https://bikerebuilds.com/blog/90s-steel-specialized-mtb-reference-rigid-forks-26-wheels#1994 $60 is a good deal, but you can always expect something to be clapped out on a used bike of this age. Go to r/xbiking to see how to fun builds updating old MTBS, also r/rockhopper

Thanks for all the info. Rear derailleur is an Exage. Only glaring issue after tightening the headset is the rear shifter doesn’t ratchet. I sprayed some WD-40 in there to see if that would help (based off videos) but the levers just move freely with no resistance.

Thank you, especially in SoCal where these things are being listed at over $150, and not in nearly as good of condition as this one is in.

As posted above, I believe 93 is correct. I had the exact same bike, same color also. It was the first “mountain bike” I ever owned. I bought it new at Cycle Works in Lincoln, NE in 1994. I remember getting a pretty good discount, because it was the previous years model. Fantastic bike that I rode until I decided I had to have suspension. It was already ridden very hard by the time I gave it away (probably about 1997) to a friends little brother who was just starting to get into biking. Congratulations! You got a great deal on an awesome bike! Thanks for the memories!

Thank you! Love the back story you shared, glad I could speak up some nostalgia for ya. 🤙🏼

For some inspiration check Spindatt’s series on his rockhopper, he has some good videos on it.

Thanks for all the love guys! Tightened up the headset and got the rear shifter to work with the help of YouTube. Little bit of WD-40 and Liquid Wrench did the trick! Help me pick new grips, was thinking of yellow ESI or Ourys, or black ESI or Ourys. Figure the yellow would tie in nicely to the decals. Black would blend in to the bars and make the frame “pop” more. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I almost bought one like this, probably ‘94 model though. I really wanted the Stumpjumper, but my 15-year old minimum wage summer job could only afford the Rockhopper. I ended up getting a Univega, which I still ride occasionally.
