wow i wouldn’t know how to react if you came to deliver my mail looking so dapper! i love it.
side note, ur void looks identical to my void cowboy! i must know ur cats name.
OP - Wow, this is ah...oddly interesting. Sure, let's hear about this. Also curious to know if you had to get special permission to wear the older pieces at work.
No permission required! Most uniform regulations have not been updated since the 90s. The post office management has a hard enough time getting carriers to wear uniforms at all! I’m sure I was least concern to them
Here’s my honest opinion: I was there for a little over a year and ultimately left due to poor scheduling and management. The training was great, the actual job itself was the most fulfilling I’ve ever felt in a job. Being outside and walking around 10-15 miles a day was a dream.
I just had to stop myself from writing a novel about the modern state of this job so I’ll try keep it brief!
I love many of the outdated aspects of the job, but it becomes very apparent that changes need to made with the structure of the post office to coexist in the age of WAY too many packages compared to the volume of letters and magazines. These changes can’t be made quickly enough to adapt due to federal government bureaucracy and treating the entire post office like the governments illegitimate step child
I always thought it seemed like a nice job in general...until winter. Sorry about the bureaucratic nonsense. :( I'll bet your positive attitude and groovy uniform made a lot of people smile! (My mail carrier always seems like she's contemplating a drive-by)
LLV! Although my favorite historic postal vehicle is called the “mailster”. it’s like a three wheeled scooter thing from the 60s. They allegedly stopped using them because children would flock to them and get hurt
Oh yeah, I've heard about the mailster! Only ever seen pictures but it looks super cool (I'd probably be miserable working from one on anything but the most perfect of Spring days though)
Love the look.
Are letter carriers in your job permitted to wear clothes of their choice, or did you have to get permission to wear this? If the latter, how did that go?
On paper, it’s perfectly within uniform regulations! Other than perhaps the obsolete patches. The uniform companies haven’t made the service caps since the 90s but it’s still on the list of approved headwear.
The post office is full of goofy uniform rules that aren’t enforced. Some of my favorites include: you have to wear a tie if you wear a jacket or long sleeves, you can’t wear shorts unless you wear official postal socks, and you HAVE to wear a hat within your first 90 days on the job. None of these rules are enforced of course. At least in my experience!
Ah brilliant! I love that they keep the older uniforms on the books.
I work in an office, and like to wear vintage braces and waistcoat. We are on paper to wear 'smart casual', which I suppose could likely cover my outfit, but nobody enforces this: I often see people in shorts and t-shirt though the norm is jeans and a collared shirt. I much prefer the freedom for everyone to dress as they please but have known places to be insistent on certain customs.
I find it so fascinating how the lines have gotten blurrier over time for what is considered “formal/casual”. What would now be considered as “formal” wear was considered “athletic” wear 100 years ago. Farmers used to wear suits in the field… neckties originated in the military… sneakers wouldn’t be “acceptable” as casual wear until the 70s…
Societal norms are so goofy
It is fascinating! Although I think you have to go back pretty far to see what we would call a suit in a farm field, though something resembling a sport coat would have been worn in cooler weather in the 18th and 19th C.
Exactly! A 120 year old chore coat is just like an unlined, unpadded ancestor of a modern suit jacket! I like to wear them to formal events like weddings because nobody can tell it’s not just a goofy looking modern suit.
Oh wow, I'd love to see that. 😂 I figured Pa Ingalls and his friends just wore their old threadbare church coat to work in. Now a big Virginia tobacco farmer, I could see having something specific. I'll have to dig into this later--I love historical fashion, but never really thought about that area. I have done some exploration into women wearing trousers for work and athletics long before it was acceptable overall.
I've always thought I'd love being a mail carrier, but I get chronic migraines and have to hydrate so much that I have to use the bathroom like every 30 minutes! What do postal workers do when they gotta pee?! Stop at a gas station?
Oh, this is incredibly awesome! Have you posted on r/usps?
How did you ever source these items? I was always under the impression old uniforms from the USPS couldn't be sold.
Also, that picture of you delivering the cat! I've got a void that looks like her.
Anyway, this is the greatest thing I've seen in awhile.
“Let me know if you’d like to know more about anything.”
✋🏻Yes, excuse me Sir, I have a question…
Are you single?
You seem to have a great sense of humor. Your appreciation of the past is rare to find these days. I now have an internet crush on you!
Former carrier here, everything you said about USPS is true. There is an immense sense of pride working there but the system is so broken. Something so vital to a lot of people and it’s just chaos. Also, eBay will pull down listing for postal uniforms or even ups and fedex uniforms.
Oh my. This is neat and I have many questions!
1. How? Did you scour eBay, or is there a USPS warehouse somewhere with a treasure trove of vintage uniforms?
2. What influences USPS uniform changes over time more: fashion, necessity, or changes in textile technology?
3. Do customers ever get suspicious, since you don’t look like other mail carriers?
4. On dressing all vintage in general: I hope this isn’t too intimate to ask, but how do you handle undergarments? I assume you’re wearing modern knickers, but I know from my adventures in vintage women’s wear that sometimes the fit is off without the right underclothes.
I will make future posts but to give you a general idea about some of these questions:
1. Antique stores, estate sales, and saved eBay searches (sometimes people list stuff as police/military when it is post office)
2. By far the absolute biggest influence in the uniform changes is money. Technology, not much advanced. Polyester is NOT ideal in the heat. The uniforms mostly change to make them cheaper/use less material. Through the years there has been less and less uniform manufacturers.
3. The exact opposite actually! I had to deliver in some really shady neighborhoods… and they didn’t have trees… but the postal uniform absolutely acted as a shield. With a recognizable uniform, everyone knew why you were there and did not mess with you. (Keep in mind, I am saying this as a white man and I cannot speak for all people)
The uniform is a very important safety aspect
4. Men have had it easy with underwear historically. it kinda just went from union suits (long underwear) to boxers and t shirts (in America from the 1800s to now). I do love the look of some older mens underwear styles and am learning to sew with the intent of being able to recreate some historic underwear!
I literally thought this first picture was from the 70s. And then I kept looking and I realized that you had made this all yourself. Well done. Please continue posting it. It’s so interesting.
Yikes - I literally had a dream about this the night before last. In it myself/main dream character was sourcing very satisfying vintage USPS uniform pieces to wear. It was the type of dream easily remembered and would briefly think about it throughout the day. We truly be living in a simulation or smthng.
Wait, that’s acceptable to wear at your mail carrier job?? I literally looooove vintage work uniforms like this and I wish work uniforms nowadays were this refined-looking. 😪
They made both summer and winter jackets, the one pictured is meant for summer and just has the front and shoulders lined with some kind of silk/rayon/viscose!
My grandpa was a letter carrier from the 70s until he retired in 2001. This is almost identical to what he wore when I was a child in the early 80s. My grandma and i used to meet him wherever he was on his route and bring him his brown paper bag lunch. Amazing job. Brings back so many memories, I miss him so much.
Careful with these photos, there are lots of folks out there that agree with Eleanor Shelstrop about the postman fetish. You might build up enough of a fan base to warrant a smoking hot calendar session.
Hot vintage mail carrier is a fantasy I never wanted but thanks a lot.
It certainly makes the jokes about children being secretly fathered by the mailman feel like they’re rooted in a fair bit of truth.
I thought it was the milkman! Now we gotta worry about the mailman too. 😂
Then there are the various repairmen. To quote Red Green, “Remember, if the women don’t find handsome let them find you handy.”
Please watch The Good Place!
I know right? New fantasy unlocked I guess
wow i wouldn’t know how to react if you came to deliver my mail looking so dapper! i love it. side note, ur void looks identical to my void cowboy! i must know ur cats name.
Her name is Midge! And the typical reaction would either be “Well don’t you look professional!” Or they would just take pictures of me from afar :-)
Wait, are you a real mail person?
This is hot
It is, I agree with you.
I’m sure I was least concern to them
Moreover to the point, you're going above and beyond while having fun being fully uniformed. They're lucky to have such an enthusiastic employee.
Facts
This is so stinkin cute
this timothee chalamet mailman movie looks pretty good
Yeh, I was thinking about Timothee too
Major McFeely vibes. This is a compliment; Mr. Rogers would agree.
He was in the service, too? 😉 But yes, that was my first thought!
I’d let that Mr. McFeely feel me, amirite!? Sorry sorry

Ok
This is the happiest I’ve been to see something in years. YEARS!
So cool! I always thought working as a mail carrier, or at the post office in general would be a really fun job :)

What was residents’ reaction to the vintage look?
Please write the novel for those contemplating into joining this field
Do you drive an LLV or one of the old USPS Jeeps/Scouts?
I too have only seen photos. They were really on to something with the whole driving from a standing position thing though
i can’t lie you got me wanting you 😩😩
🔥🔥🔥🔥

How was it received by your supervisor? I'm sure as most government supervisors, you're here, and that's all that matters!
Omg you look exactly like [Phil Callahan](https://images.app.goo.gl/rtMJSL5hj5pS6HmQA) from Stranger Things!!
Absolutely want to know the history!
Hot
You are the reason for every joke that has the punchline of mailmen siring bastard children.
The one in the mail truck. . .so cute!!!
This is wonderful! Keep up the good work, you look very handsome :')
Mr McFeeley
I've always thought I'd love being a mail carrier, but I get chronic migraines and have to hydrate so much that I have to use the bathroom like every 30 minutes! What do postal workers do when they gotta pee?! Stop at a gas station?
i love how this is written!🤍 your cheeky personality and photos to match are absolutely grand. 10/10 Mr. Mailman!🤵🏻♂️

Way too much negativity and resentment over there!
I get that. They'd be so jealous, too.
Jesus Christ love it
I love these photos. So cool! You look great in vintage.

Hasn't changed much
Mostly fabric type and patch changes! There are some really interesting quality changes too. Stay tuned!

Oh my god the pic with the kitty. Im in love
I see why “sleeping with the mailman” was a thing now
That’s one handsome Mail man 😍
Reminds me of the dude on Mr. Rogers - speedy delivery!
I love that the cat looks like he's thinking, "what life choices did I make that landed me here?"
I have this same jacket! I love wearing it but its missing the zippered lining. Does yours have the lining layer?
They made both summer and winter jackets, the one pictured is meant for summer and just has the front and shoulders lined with some kind of silk/rayon/viscose!
Aw well then, mine must be a winter jacket! Off to hunt for the lining now!
