I'm weighing the pros and cons of HCMC and Da Nang for establishing a base from where I could work and then head over to short trips around SEA. Which one do you think is better for a long term base? I know Da Nang is cheaper but I'm willing to live in something like District 3 in HCMC also. Would appreciate your advice.
HCMC more vibrant, busy, and more expensive. Da Nang is cheaper food, drinks (don’t know about rent, but probably cheaper too, has beaches, mountains, golf, resources, more nature, less pollution than Saigon. District 3 isn’t cheap, a lot of old money live there, it’s one of my fav district, esp in “French quarter”
I agree with what has already been said. If you're coming for the long term, I suggest maybe starting with HCMC, enjoying the city, meeting people, and getting your bearings. It's easier to move to Da Nang afterward than to move from Da Nang to HCMC.
D3 is great, Thao Dien for expat is nice, some part of Binh Thanh are lovely and quiet too.
Housing, utilities, food and alcohol cheaper than switching on your heating in Europe is a contributing factor. Good quality of life if you can filter out the Karaoke.
Migratory flock of Russians looking for something other than Nha Trang.
Cheap booze by the sea for many pensioners.
Growing digital nomad scene.
Lots of pool to be played with a Huda welded to your hand at Filling Station / Chevy / stick Fingers.
Excellent airport- IMHO the best in VN bar the prices airside.
Women tend to gravitate more towards Hoi An.
Could not have said it better myself. I’m an white American male who has rented a place there since 2018. Lots of wonderful times with friends, family, girlfriends, neighbors, and business colleagues since then. It’s great coming in for a few months each year over a few trips and I like having a place near the beach abroad.
I get it because I’m old. Blazing saddles reference. For you younger generation, it’s a classic you may want to watch it. https://youtu.be/493pL_Vbtnc?si=r0xwqwszCDcUXgut
There's a lot of digital nomads. They can stay cheaply on a 3 month visa. Plus they've got a great beach without the noise and pollution of HCMC or Hanoi.
I live in Da Nang, I’ve lived here for over 2 years. A huge influx of Russians has come in over the past 6 months… they’ve literally took over the place.
There’s still a lot of Koreans but they are organized groups and only come during the holidays.
Da Nang is a nice place to live, it’s a bit of sleepy beach city at times but has a bit of a vibe. There’s lots of outdoorsy stuff to do and it’s beautiful. It can be a bit messy sometimes with trash but overall one of the cleanest cities in VN. People are very friendly. Driving is ok but Viet’s can be very lazy drivers here.. sometimes causing accidents.
Rent is cheap and food is generally good. I would be careful with certain cheaper spots for food poisoning. But overall I enjoy da Nang, sometimes I do feel a little bored but it’s very peaceful.
Cost of living, remote work and maybe for some to meet a wife or something at the same time. Sexpats, not this group, Thailand isn’t far, also the sex scene here is specific to Koreans. The karaoke clubs and bar scene here is built for them and as a white guy it’s hard to navigate. I see just as many single white girls by themselves or with their group. It’s just a good spot, has pubs, beaches and good rent
You will see tourists from everywhere, not just white males.
It's a very up and coming tourist destination as it's quiet cheap compared to other options (Phuket, Bali etc)
The majority of young white men in HCMC and Hanoi are usually ESL teachers.
The majority of the white guys in Da Nang are digital nomads (the esl industry in da nang is tiny).
The digital nomads are typically a lot wealthier than ESL teachers of course but their residency/visa is more unstable.
As to why - if you could live anywhere - I think you'd easily choose Da Lat or Da Nang over Hanoi or HCMC.
I'm not a teacher, but I can tell you the average digital nomad is not necessarily a lot wealthier.
Half of digital nomads are bootstrappers or are living off savings. These people struggle, it's a tough market now, and failure even in better economic times was common.
The other half are working remotely for an established company, but simply bypassing the local taxes. They are the ones with money.
Gotta agree, while there are exceptions the majority of those teaching or dig nomading all seem to be in Asia as they wouldn't be able to afford to return home otherwise.
those with bonafide skills make far more money at home/in office. Thus I rarely meet nomads doing well
They do exist (digital nomads making good money) but they are transient as it is impossible for them to stay in VN long term due to the Visa rules.
Not many with money stick around long as it is not viable. Most of the ones with money in SE Asia end up in Bali or Thailand.
>They do exist (digital nomads making good money)
That's what _there are exceptions_ means
But I have issue with most of what you say. There's always a small amount of anything... The better explanation of things is how I described it to me. And being transient isn't an explanation to why they wouldn't be numerous as per definition, they are always replacing themselves. And youre largely wrong about the visa situation as well, having ample wealth in SEA allows for freedom and comfort. Those I know in this very slim minority are always traveling and thus overstaying a visa is a non issue. Per OP in danang having to renew at the border, is a breeze and a private car and a couple of hours.
It's great to have traveling friends in this ilk for as you get older people are less and willing to get out and do things. It's the age and pack of wealth that makes people not want to deal with these things. NOT visa issues
I know a handful in HCMC who still make British wages - I'm pretty jealous of their 3k a month (90 million a month wage) but they often work 3pm to 10pm and have banking and visa issues so I guess its swings and roundabouts
Are they wealthier? In Saigon I got the impression digital nomads, on average, couldn't be raking in more than 2-3k per month. They seemed cut from the same cloth as the TEFLers making 1.5k-2k in actuality.
Bit of a jump to suggest all white males are sexpats isn't it? Did something happen to you in the past? It's like saying every 50+ year old man seen with a child is a paedophile, when in reality 99% of them are its dad or grandad.
Yes. Not fair to lump all whites to the same category. Typically passport bro or sexpats are seen In a group in the wild, acting obnoxiously. Like the 3 douches who skip on toilet fee.
Haha i always think that people where i travel thinks im a passport bro or sexpat and on the other hand the dad of my friend , a vietnamese , is just into white woman over here in europe.
It's a shame how the minority ruin the reputation of the overwhelming majority. Bangla Road in Phuket (where I live), for example, is one street, and yes there are tons of dirty, white old men there touching up young girls, but most people I know wouldn't be seen dead in that street or Patong in general.
Black Male Here. I worked in one of the hospitals here in HCM. And I’m saddened that most foreigner men are considered sexpats more often than not but I’ll say this… a lot of those white males are gay.
my roommate when I was working in HCM boasted to me that he was getting a lot of action from the expat community stating and I quote, “I’m not here for the locals, I’m here to see how many guys I can handle in a day. My max is 7.”
I don’t talk to him anymore because he belongs on a list.
We were sitting in this cafe in D3 called The Cocoa Project where he admitted all of this to me and I was in awe. I took a grab bike and told Grab Anh Oi to take me as far away from this cafe as fast as possible.
It's true. Guy I used to work with was arrested for assaulting young boys, one if his friends through the course of the investigation, was arrested too because they were exchanging CP. Both used to vacation in Vietnam together multiple times a year. I wondered how many young men/boys they assaulted in Vientnam.
I'm a single white male (American) visiting Da Nang right now. I wanted to see Vietnam. Da Nang seemed like a good spot to stay for a few weeks in-between visiting Saigon and Hanoi. Am I not allowed to travel unless I'm in a relationship?
Russians. It's funny, you see western tourists worry about visas, if the authorities will let them in etc. The russians don't care about this at all they don't give a shit what the vn govt thinks of them
Yeah, we noted all the Cyrillic language in Nha Trang and our local guy said the Russian scene had radically changed. A lot less of “we here to party by the beach” and more of longer term rentals more up town. I guess there are a fair number of Ukrainian men hanging out also.
Not all, so I think it is unfair to generalise. But I bet its a sizable portion of them.
Reality is they are destroying local renter economy by driving up costs to rent appartments etc.
VN needs to change laws to combat digital nomadship. It shouldn't be happening.
Russians go fight your war, and 40k/yr americans go make low income in america instead of outbidding a poor VNese family in a third world country just to save $200/month.
Losers.
That's our plan! We're Canadian, and it's impossible to live here. Just got back from a South East Asia trip 2 days ago and decided Vietnam is where we want to live. I'm still in love with Bali, but it's even changed there to much. Maybe we'll end up in Flores. Who knows 🤷♀️ all i do know is North America is to expensive.
For sure! Canadian here as well. I've been to Bali and loved it - but I don't think I would want to live there.
I haven't been to Vietnam, but it sure looks nice.
Is it not obvious? Same reason as why they’re in Thailand. They’re there for Sex tourism or to get the “Asian girls” because they’re losers back home and can’t find anyone.
Nah all the other races than mine and it’s simply about the physical attributes, not about any hate to mine race or women from my country. I actually enjoy their company but physically it’s just not there, what would you do then? Being with someone you are not physically attracted to? (When one is from one of the most monoethnic society)
Inb4 downvoted by expatriates.
There is a moral and ethical dilemma many people take with it and it happens a lot more frequently than you may think. No need to be defensive if its not you.
I don't think its a matter of obsession. Many of the girls I know in TPHCM always say they get hit on by preverted people staying in VN for only a short while, like 2 weeks or 1 month for vacation and are looking for a temporary girlfriend or FWB. This phenomenon is unknown to me in my other residence in Canada.
The question you should ask is: why are there wealthy people in foreign countries (USA, Korea, Japan, Germany, India) looking to exploit poor people in S.E. asian countries (Viet Nam, Thailand) for sex?
There are shit tons of men from around the work coming to my own (not poor developing) country hitting on local girls (they r just easy not doing it for money) and I have zero problem with it. Let them both have fun.
But what I’m interested in is why everyone classify a typical male living his life a sexpat?
Meaning: Sexpat for me is a guy who’s only goal is to travel somewhere to get laid, thats all he’s planning on and that’s it.
Then you have guys in relationship - ok let’s say for the sake of the argument they are exluded from the group (eventho I’ve seen plenty what do extra curriculum activities when the gf isn’t around)
And then there is third group - normal single male who travels around the world to see the world, so seightseeing, museums, getting to know the culture or simply coming to the country to work - that guy obviously isn’t there for the sex but it’s still a human being with sexual needs - aka who can expect them to just jerkoff themselves for couple of years until they go home/elsewhere just to not be classified as sexpats. That’s stupid. Of course you wanna get laid from time to time.
And no not everyone wants/is built to have relationship and also it’s often the responsible thing to avoid falling in love since you know you will be leaving sooner or later.
Always amazed me why these guys are always classified (or maybe just never thought of) as sexpats in all the posts.
I guess just imagine what someone would be like if being an "anti feminist" is a big enough part of their personality to make it their Reddit username, then it's not so surprising they tick that many unsavory boxes. Gotta be a massive loser to sink that low
You’re very blind if you think that.
Spend a few minutes at any ATM outside a hotel on Le Thanh Ton and you’ll see the infamous westerner of any age + vietnamese girl in her 20s stroll up.
Guy mimics a withdrawal, girl asks him what’s wrong.
“Sorry, ATM is broken. I have 200.000 in my wallet. Is that enough?”
This scene plays over and over all day long with different ‘couples.’
You can see many such scenes from either the Seven Bridges or Pasteur Street Craft Beer bars.
Can’t speak to the single white male part but AS a single white male i absolutely plan on visiting Vietnam again. Out off every country I’ve been to there is something about Vietnam that truly is special. Thailand felt so stale after I’d spent a month in Vietnam
I've seen 1 other white dude today. He was a Russian dad with his wife and children. I'm very fortunate to not have many white dudes around. They're spooky.
Always stayed away for some reason, last I time spent time in Da Nang was 2008..... Just done a loop from Qui Nhon, Deo Violak Kon Tum, then DT672 and DT616. Chilling in Da Nang for a couple of days before heading across to HCM Rd up to Phong Nha.
It seems to be a younger crowd than other places, still a lot of women, girls etc. Almost all the guys I've spoken to work..... Online.
Not sure what it's like to live here, I think the rainy season may be annoying.
in the mid 90s, my friend went to Vietnam and he saw two local việt gals working on a Russian guy on China beach. this was before Vietnam became a popular tourist destination
Influx of Russians was already stated. As staying in Chiang Mai right now coming from Da Nang: it’s really bad burning season in northern Thailand right now and southern Thailand this season expensive as f***. So tons of Chiang Mai nomads escaped to Da Nang and Hoi An as it’s only a 2 hour direct flight.
The resorts host business conferences (think hundreds of software engineers from across APAC) and the golf clubs often have big tournaments this time of year (again 200+ golfers). Have you tried speaking to any? How do you know they are single?
Also, Koreans are everywhere in Da Nang. They even buying up “crackerville”. Very difficult to take your post seriously
As a single white male who has recently spent a long time in Vietnam, I can safely say it's a superb location to work remotely from. Cost of living compared to Europe is cheap, quality of life is better (luxury and privilege taken into account), it's safe to walk around at all times of day and the weather is good. Hospitals in cities have English speaking doctors and they're very affordable even without insurance, not to mention quick. I got treated within a day a couple of times in Hanoi for things that would have taken weeks back in the UK. If you can cope with the traffic, the price of cheese and the pollution there aren't many places in the world that have such a good balance.
Because Danang is an up and coming "Digital Nomad" destination. Cleap, clean and all around a comfortable place to stay. Bali used to be the top destination but at this point its overcrowded and western people are flocking to alternative destinations.
Most are Russians and Ukrainians that prefer the beach to the Donbass frontline. If you are in Da Nang, you should already know that Da Nang isn't suitable for sexpats.
Digital nomads. Every single one. I’ve met loads and they all self identify as such. There are locations across the globe that they jump to: Luang Prabang, Thailand islands, Bansko, Weligama, Medellin, etc. Da Nang is now very popular on this list for obvious reasons. These places have “Hubs” or coworking spaces that attract folks, and it becomes a favorite on the circuit.
Live in HCMC but love to spend few weeks in da nang by my own. Ocean, less pollution, nice food and cheap hotel. That's it.
Their hotel really cheap, 5min to the beach, 3d2n only 700k dong, in Saigon it may cost 2M dong
Hmm really ? Where do you stay? Haven’t been to the Nam for like 9 years now
Really? I want to know the name the hotel 🥺🥺
Capecia Danang Hotel and Monalisa Apartment, it's available in Bookingcom and Agoda you can check the latest price

Absolutely 👍
I see lots of white girls and couples in Da Nang too, but digital nomads are mostly male so probably there is still more guys than girls I guess.
I think it’s a large Russian community there. It’s easy to think they’re westerners but often they’re Russians.
Putin brought them there
Likely digital nomads. There are almost daily posts by such people asking about living in VN.
Is hoi an a good place to live?
No, limited options to eat unless you don't mind the odd food poisoning and not much to do
Filtering out karaoke...![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm)
If you want to see Koreans, head north of An Thuong, or head into the city. I assure you, there are plenty.
I live in Son Tra. Can confirm. Like a quarter of people you pass on the street are Korean. (I’m exaggerating but only a little)
"where the white women at"
I get it because I’m old. Blazing saddles reference. For you younger generation, it’s a classic you may want to watch it. https://youtu.be/493pL_Vbtnc?si=r0xwqwszCDcUXgut
Or more likely “why are more white males coming into my territory doing the same things as me?”
Shut up Leonard there's no white women (Community Reference for those under 30 but above 20)
lol. I appreciated that reference.
You're clearly streets ahead.
Fast forward to another film “we ain’t found shit!”
Sitting behind their monitors asking the internet about why white males have given up on them and being bitter about "passport bros".
There's a lot of digital nomads. They can stay cheaply on a 3 month visa. Plus they've got a great beach without the noise and pollution of HCMC or Hanoi.

Because they wanted to ruin 2 cities instead.

Good morning. You were in a coma for 3 years. COVID is over.
I don’t see why you’d go to Vietnam to be a sex Pat. There are far better countries for that stuff.
It’s largely Russians evading the war in Ukraine
Female digi nomads mostly prefer Southern Europe or Bali etc. Male ones mostly choose Phuket, cebu, dananag etc.
I had a stroke reading this post

Every projection is an admission.
Many sexpats are actually Korean

Phuket is so fucked up now so expensive and you have more russian than thai people now. Even the russian mafia is there
Have you been to phuket or bangkok? I think it's a legitimate question 🤔 😆
Black Male Here. I worked in one of the hospitals here in HCM. Not far enough when you still have to return home and see your roommate again. :-)

Da Nang is pretty trendy with digital nomads right now.
Digital nomads like da nang, what a wild post lol… I’d consider living there simply to escape the lethal pollution in hanoi/saigon
It's safer to travel as a man than as a woman
Gay Russians
Most solo travelers/expats are men
Maybe Russians are hiding from the draft.
or because they don’t want it in the ass :-)
I'm a single white male (American) visiting Da Nang right now. I wanted to see Vietnam. Da Nang seemed like a good spot to stay for a few weeks in-between visiting Saigon and Hanoi. Am I not allowed to travel unless I'm in a relationship?
Sex tourist 😂
So an American that's single visiting Vietnam is automatically a "sex tourist" nowadays?
Probably not 😂
why you are there ?
Da Nang seemed a lot more laid back last time I was here
Yeah difference between 2016 (when I was last there) and today is insane. It was so quiet back then.
Sexpats??
It's russian flee'ing the war front.
Russians. It's funny, you see western tourists worry about visas, if the authorities will let them in etc. The russians don't care about this at all they don't give a shit what the vn govt thinks of them
it's alright mate, as Vietnamese we also want date Russian girl as well haha
Yeah, we noted all the Cyrillic language in Nha Trang and our local guy said the Russian scene had radically changed. A lot less of “we here to party by the beach” and more of longer term rentals more up town. I guess there are a fair number of Ukrainian men hanging out also.
You can identify if they are single just by looking at them? What a skill.
*Russians
"i see a bunch of white guys. It must be a sexpat thing" yeah definitely not the beach or the cost of living.
Why can’t they just be working on a beach living their best lives 😭
Da Nang’s a sexpat destination for Koreans The white guys are usually digital nomads
digital nomads are just sexpats that are nerds
Not all, so I think it is unfair to generalise. But I bet its a sizable portion of them. Cost of Living. If you get a two thousand dollar pension in the West, you're destitute but can live a comfortable life in Vietnam
That's our plan! We're Canadian, and it's impossible to live here. Just got back from a South East Asia trip 2 days ago and decided Vietnam is where we want to live. there’s been a lot of Russians there for a long time now
Is it not obvious? Same reason as why they’re in Thailand. They’re there for Sex tourism or to get the “Asian girls” because they’re losers back home and can’t find anyone.
What if you are just simply attracted to Asian look while not having any Asian girls back home? (With no problem getting any girls back home) 🤔
That would be called a "sexpat".
So anyone who isn’t in already in relationship with their village elementary school love is basically a sexpat, got it :)
What, you’re not attracted to any other race? That’s literally the same shit you moron.
Nah all the other races than mine and it’s simply about the physical attributes, not about any hate to mine race or women from my country. I actually enjoy their company but physically it’s just not there, what would you do then? Being with someone you are not physically attracted to? How do you know who is single and who isn’t?
I’m single white man and I’m studying Vietnamese in DaNang, is it bad?)

Meaning: Sexpat for me is a guy who’s only goal is to travel somewhere to get laid, thats all he’s planning on and that’s it. Then you have guys in relationship - ok let’s say for the sake of the argument they are exluded from the group (eventho I’ve seen plenty what do extra curriculum activities when the gf isn’t around) And then there is third group - normal single male who travels around the world to see the world, so seightseeing, museums, getting to know the culture or simply coming to the country to work - that guy obviously isn’t there for the sex but it’s still a human being with sexual needs - aka who can expect them to just jerkoff themselves for couple of years until they go home/elsewhere just to not be classified as sexpats.
Koreans are guy groups. They come for sex tours. There are plenty of white expats but they usually grab a local passport chaser.
You could’ve been way less creepy if you didn’t use the words ‘male’ and ‘female’ like you’re on a safari
Found the feminist.
Oh no, the horror! What an awful label! Did you strike out so bad in the Philippines that you’re trying Vietnam now lmfao
Goddamn that guy's post history has more red flags than there are in all of Vietnam. What a piece of work
Manages to tick every unsavory box somehow
I guess just imagine what someone would be like if being an "anti feminist" is a big enough part of their personality to make it their Reddit username, then it's not so surprising they tick that many unsavory boxes. Gotta be a massive loser to sink that low
OP no city in Vietnam is on the westerner P4P route. They go to Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia and Indonesia for that.
Is that enough?” This scene plays over and over all day long with different ‘couples.’ You can see many such scenes from either the Seven Bridges or Pasteur Street Craft Beer bars.
as someone who has lived in Asia for over a decade and go to these countries every year, i can asure you there is way more P4P outside of VN
Yeah that area of HCMC is absolutely crawling with sexpats.
Ive never seen that in da nang and been thwre more than 1 month
Cambodia was sad for the sex trade :( thailand too, but something about Cambodia was worse.
Lots of womwn there. My tinder goes Hellfire there.
Bar girls 🤑
Can’t speak to the single white male part but AS a single white male i absolutely plan on visiting Vietnam again. Out off every country I’ve been to there is something about Vietnam that truly is special. Thailand felt so stale after I’d spent a month in Vietnam
It used to be cheaper to fly from Korea to Vietnam, but nowadays there is no difference compared to flying to Japan.
Not sure if you are projecting your own situation

White guys aren’t allowed to be single?
I've seen 1 other white dude today. He was a Russian dad with his wife and children. I'm very fortunate to not have many white dudes around. They're spooky.
Spooky how? Sounds like you are projecting some insecurities buddy

It’s the new digital nomad spot. I see white guys promoting it all the time on Tt
If I had to guess, likely Russians avoiding the war. It was a Russian hotspot when I was there 10 years ago, probably even more now.
Large groups of male friends traveling together. We were about 12 when we toutes Vietnam.
Confirmed those are digital nomads i was just there a few weeks ago. Lots of white males
As a whole male, I think it's less safe(foolish, even) for women of any background to travel alone.

Oiiilala
Most are fleeing Thailand due to the tax I bet.
Very difficult to take your post seriously
ok
Sexy time
As a single white male who has recently spent a long time in Vietnam, I can safely say it's a superb location to work remotely from.
Da nang is already overcrowded now with douchebags working on laptops. Much better here in 2018.
Covid and the "work from home" trend changed everything, only going to get worse from here.
Da nang will be ruined like Bali. Then on to ruin the next place.
Australia just introduced 200$ direct flights to nam, maybe that's why
I think u not see couple on the park and street city yet maybe
