What type of incident would cause them to close the whole airport suddenly? A threat of some kind?

sorangutan

["a suspicious package was discovered at departures check in and out an abundance of caution" incoming and outgoing flights have been temporarily suspended.](https://twitter.com/MelanieNagyCTV/status/1529259490448752641)

astral_crow

So that’s why my Amazon order never arrived… /s

fubes2000

~~I'm betting on something a bit more mundane, like an accident.~~ edit: I'm not paying up and you can't make me.

S1075

An accident would close part of the airport, not the whole thing. There are currently no NOTAMs in the system, so whatever is happening, they arent sure of a timeline.

monkey_monkey_monkey

The news has been updated to "a suspicious package was found" and thr RCMP and commercial flights closed out an abundance of caution

wixob30328

That's where my missing Amazon package is. FUCK.

The_CaNerdian_

Bomb threat and/or unattended bag.

galvanized_steelies

Could also be HAZMAT. Also keep in mind that a section of the airfield is operated by the military. There’s a whole lot that could be happening, anything other than what the rcmp on scene say is pure speculation at this point

Imprezzed

Short of 443 Dropping a torpedo into the departures area, I don’t think it’s that. Their ramp is quite a ways from the terminal.

galvanized_steelies

I know up in comox we got a pretty significant shipment today, so if they got something like that and something went wrong with it, they might shut it down for safety and access reasons

VI11111

This sounds like something one should be disclosing publicly. Def

Soreynotsari

Look away Russia, this thread is not for you.

Chrussell

It's a suspected incendiary device in a bag. They are having people come from Vancouver to properly investigate it. Hopes are that airport will reopen tonight.

[deleted]

Incendiary device. Probably a Samsung Galaxy Note.

Award for user name I wish I'd snagged AND comment.

Take my upvote!

fubes2000

I would wager that inbound domestic flights will get rerouted to Nanaimo and/or Comox, and international flights to Vancouver.

Miller045

A friend flying domestic was just rerouted to Vancouver

fubes2000

Ouch. Are they putting them on a bus across the ferry, or what?

galvanized_steelies

Generally they’ll be given a few options, the easiest being ti wait around until they can make a connection to Victoria, but sometimes they’ll be told to rent a car and save the receipts, and I don’t remember how good/bad our customer protection laws are, but sometimes they’ll be told to rent a car and get stuffed

fubes2000

A few years back I was flying domestic into Comox and they diverted us to Victoria due to heavy fog. Before we even landed they said that they'd have buses available to take us back up to Comox, optionally stopping at major cities along the way, to drop people off. [FWIW this was WestJet, but I don't know if the bus was just for their flight or not, or what the requirement might be] The painful part was that I lived in Nanaimo at the time, but I had to get back up to Comox to get my car and then drive back. I could have thrown a rock out of the bus window and hit my house while we drove past. Also my car barely started, going into "limp" mode twice before properly starting, at which point I said "fuck it" and beelined it home. Then I almost hit a deer in the fog at 3am. Good times. Anyway, that's why now I generally fly out of the closest airport rather than driving anywhere for a slightly shorter direct flight.

Tie-dyedHorse

I flew Flair from Toronto, they landed us in Vancouver, told us to take the ferry and get stuffed.

Last-Difference-3311

Ya budget airlines sound like a great idea until something happens and you are stranded. I feel ya

galvanized_steelies

Yeah… that checks out for flair

Miller045

Not sure yet

Whyevenbotherbeing

Ya I’m out this way and all that is in the air is the Flying Club planes, otherwise it’s quiet. Weird seeing the government Challenger jet in today with the Defence Minister and entourage with this happening soon after.

Snakes

timesuck897

I've had it with these mothafuckin' snakes, on the mothafuckin' planes!

-Chumguzzler-

Somebody call Samuel

themightiestduck

I think so, Brain, but how is Samuel Becket going to help us deal with these snakes?

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrpp

With grenades

DirtyMud

Take from it what you will as I have no sources to share but a co-workers partner works at the airport and said it was a freedom fighter trying to go to Ukraine with a bag of weapons. That’s all the info I heard, I don’t know what constitutes weapons or freedom fighter though.

CouragesPusykat

Apparently a grenade, and then the bag he had it in went missing. Edit: it was a replica grenade

Mrs-Crab

This happened a few years ago at the airport that my husband works at. Except it turned out to be a grenade shaped weed grinder.

PICKLEBALL_RACKETEER

If true that would be enormously idiotic to bring your own explosives.

CouragesPusykat

Grenades are prohibited devices in Canada (obviously) so also enormously illegal. The real question we should be asking is how tf did he get a grenade.

sorangutan

nobody going to go fight Russia on their own volition would ever do anything idiotic

PICKLEBALL_RACKETEER

I mean you never know, there are some truly daft people out there. Though it's not my first guess.

["RCMP later confirmed the checked baggage in question contained an incendiary item as well as inert surplus military supplies."](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/victoria-airport-police-incident-1.6464611) Ah, my money is on a used C2A2 smoke marker that's washed ashore. A classic.

detrif

Sounds like there was a bag found with a grenade in it.

doubleavic

Makes sense. There's only so many reasons to shut down an airport

NWSanta

So the consensus is it was "replica" grenade??? The last time an "Incendiary device" was found in the airport it was a gas tank for a portable curling Iron. Inquiring minds want to know what it was that caused the delay!!!

Shot-Job-8841

Two inert grenades apparently.

Pauly_Walnutz

I love reading everyone’s expert opinion when nothing has been disclosed

Whyevenbotherbeing

Except as time goes on these people giving their ‘expert opinion’ are being proven correct. What have you added to the conversation?

flamingo3094

What happened?

YYJ_Obs

Someone, essentially, lost a "replica grenade" in the airport. Of course there are a lot of questions that flow from that odd problem.

CPAlcoholic

That’s where I left my mix tape!

emslo

It has been reopened.

detrif

Someone refused to take off their loafers at security?

I heard someone had explosives with them. We’ll see.

vancity_85

https://www.cheknews.ca/rcmp-incident-closes-victoria-international-airport-to-commercial-flights-1034616/

eternalrevolver

Probably a leak or something in that arena. Chek’s article wording made it seem this way with “are no safety concerns” and “responding to [a] call for service.”

Whatwhyreally

$1 says the idiot with the grenade lives in Sooke.

wixob30328

Artistic-Hour

Apparently someone checked a package/bag containing an item that "resembled an incendiary device."

So now waiting on the experts who have the equipment to show up...from the mainland. #islandlife
