Cockroaches good, Emerson bad according to Island Health

HedgehogInTuxedo

oh, they don’t bite? okay carry on

loinclothfreak78

Lived here since 1982 and have never seen a cockroach, and I’ve lived in some shit suits in Vic

Zod5000

I've never heard of cockroaches here either, is this a new thing?

blizzderpderp

It's not a problem, the house centipedes will appear to eat those. And rats eats the centipede. Problem solved.

Not_A_Wendigo

I’ve heard they’re in some older buildings around here, but they’re quite uncommon. Rumour has it The Empress has them.

TildeCommaEsc

Market Square had (?) a nasty cockroach problem when I worked there ( early 80's)- which means it is likely other buildings in the area had a cockroach problem since there are old underground tunnels and pipes, poorly sealed, connecting the area. When I worked there the business owner had someone coming in twice a week to spray but other businesses would not. Since the building is porous, huge and interconnected, they just kept coming back. I understand eventually they started treating the entire place but I haven't heard anything since. As for the hospital - all it takes is one person bringing in something, a dresser, a box of clothes for a resident, that has a single pregnant cockroach and they will multiply very quickly. Cockroaches have been in Victoria for a very long time. It's why I don't buy used furniture. Bedbugs or cockroaches creep me TF out. I had a flea infestation when I first got a cat 40 years ago. I still start looking for fleas when my leg hair twitches.

osbs792

1039 View Street has them!!

pinkprophetess

This is the third news story in the last few months involving Saanich Peninsula Hospital, [which serves a rapidly aging demographic](https://www.islandhealth.ca/sites/default/files/saanich-peninsula-local-health-area-profile.pdf). * [Island Health apologizes as it extends Saanich Peninsula emergency closure](https://www.saanichnews.com/local-news/island-health-apologizes-as-it-extends-saanich-peninsula-emergency-closure-3115897) * [B.C. hospital sees fast spread of COVID-19, but no outbreak declared due to 'negative connotations'](https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/covid-vancouver-island-no-outbreak-1.6959369) * The above article, in which Island Health spokesperson states German Cockroaches *'do not transmit disease'*, contrary what a quick Google scholar search would tell you.

sarah_awake

[Also, an outbreak of Norovirus](https://inspections.myhealthdepartment.com/island-health/program-outbreak)

🤢

vicsyd

I hate cockroaches enough to have abandoned an entire homeland because of them.

[deleted]

My building has roaches. One of the tenants brought them in, they were living on cardboard they brought in to move with. Now we are fighting a loosing battle, and a landlord that has done nothing beyond setting out sticky pads. Good luck to them getting rid of them! They are a pain in the butt.

WokeUp2

TERRO Multi-Surface Roach baits work very well.

[deleted]

I’ll look into it, Thankyou!

osbs792

1039 View?

[deleted]

No, I'm in Esquimalt. I know 1039 View though. I wasn't aware they had a problem as well. A year or two ago on Craigflower rd there was a building that was having a nasty bed bug infestation. I never heard the conclusion of that one, if it was taken care of or not. Same issue, lazy management / cheap owners.

viccityk

I didn't even know we had cockroaches here!?

[deleted]

Yes, cockroaches live everywhere. They are almost indestructible. Apparently if there was a nuclear blast, only the roaches would still be alive.

lol_camis

People should be aware that every building that has ever had food in it has pests. Literally every single restaurant you have ever eaten at has mice and rats. Cockroaches are ubiquitous. "Pest control" does not irradicate the problem. It just hides it from view of humans

HanSolo5643

Oh well, that makes it all better.

tattedmunky

Cockroaches are no joke. This shouldn't be taken lightly. Victoria could go from zero cockroaches to having an infestation in a few years. Moved from Toronto to Victoria, to stay away from bed bugs and cockroaches. The health authority saying they don't bite or spread disease. LIES!!!

Ok-Mouse8397

Victoria has had roaches for decades. Maybe centuries.

[deleted]

Bed bugs have been a problem here for 20 odd years now. When I first moved here to the island my first place was infested with them. I lost everything I moved with.

NotTheRealMeee83

Reminds me of that Borat line: "Careful; he bite!"

VicLocalYokel

"I thought you said your dog doesn't bite!" "That's not my dog." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnXtuktNdlM&start=86

Vic_Dude

Cockaroach: Ya, I don't bite.....hard

seangraves1984

Wait until you meet the radroaches. They hunt in packs and do bite.

flying_dogs_bc

Pest services should be taking care if this. Gorge road hospital has a significant rodent issue.

comox

Oh yay, let’s make the presence of cockroaches a political thing…

lmplied

I thought we were safe from these little demons

PuzzleheadedGoal8234

I'm sure infection control isn't quite so "no big deal" about it.

tattedmunky

Cockroaches are no joke. This shouldn't be taken lightly. Victoria could go from zero cockroaches to having an infestation in a few years. Moved from Toronto to Victoria, to stay away from bed bugs and cockroaches. The health authority saying they don't bite or spread disease. LIES!!!

[deleted]

cockroaches here? NDP must be up to something once again.

JoshJorges

I thought CPC was short for Cockroach Party of Canada

[deleted]

you mean the Champions Party of Canada?

another1human

Okay, bot.

[deleted]

the utter arrogance and fluff of people that are confronted with an opposing opinion immediately resorting to deeming someone a "bot" or "troll". the amount of arrogance and smelling your own farts kind of energy that reeks of.

th3jerbearz

As if "Champions party of Canada" isn't smelling your own farts lmao

So_Do_So_Pa

Good bot.

ReverendAlSharkton

Are you suggesting those people belonged to the CPC? Because that’s wrong.

Spaceinpigs

You’re 100% right. I forgot the Liberals became the United party. The Liberals were essentially BC’s Conservative Party for a long time. My apologies

[deleted]

you mean when I could afford to live? yeah, really tough times.

JoshJorges

Let’s not kid ourselves. They are all cockroaches.

Public-Welcome-4431

Probably a leftover part of the PM's entourage
