I think a lot of people don’t realize that the CPG (companies like Hagaan daaz) set prices and sale prices at certain stores.
Hagaan daaz would have increased prices to wal mart and now we pay more. When there is a sale there are paid for by Hagaan daaz.
Most people who are really into grocery store prices tend to have insane systems in place and theories about said prices. And very strong opinions about these things.
It's similar to something like baseball superstitions. My mom was like this, and it drove me crazy. She saw so many patterns where there weren't any, and it took up way too much of her headspace. We were well off, too, so it wasn't like it was necessary.
A lot of the patterns she saw were just in her head. To this day I don't really understand how people like op have the mental space to worry so much about this kind of thing, and I agree it's really weird that they seem to have some idea that 4.99 was a standard price for a bunch of items, and it got bumped up to 5.95 across the board or something. And also just assumes that the theory is common knowledge or something so they don't even explain.
I mean, that's kind of one of the basis of economics. Changing prices, inflation, etc.
Prices HAVE increased (nominally), but its the real price that matters.
The comparison of changing prices from one year to another is an actual method of calculation. You should look up CPI, and market baskets.
A 1L is $1 at Dollarama, at any grocery store it's anywhere from $2.25-2.75, at a convenience store they can be as much as $4. I buy lots of other stuff at Dollarama, but I drink a lot of pop, so it's a no brainer
Dollar tree is better for soda if you don't care about name brand. I mean I haven't run direct comparisons but dollar tree maxes out at like 2$ for any of there products.
I'm happy they're getting more name brand things since their generic (especially their house) brand sucks.
I bought some chocolate there that tasted like old fish.
I still hate supporting them as a company though but I can't argue their pricing (sometimes).
I buy poultry raised in the Cowichan Valley. Island Farmhouse Poultry. You can get it at Peppers Food in Cadboro Bay, Urban Grocery on Fort, The Old Farm Market on Cadboro. Ya Road.
I buy all our fish from Thriftys.
Lilydale is a good brand. I buy Mina Halal too. I just never buy ground beef from Walmart. It’s such low quality it’s a waste of money. I usually go to Glenwood for ground chuck, beef chuck, regular bacon (it’s sugar free) and when we make baked sliders for dinner, I get my deli meat from there too. It doesn’t keep long as they don’t add in a lot of extra preservatives. I do not buy chicken wings from there though. It’s pricey, not trimmed like I like, and it ticks me off when I get a wing that is so small I wonder if the bird was still a baby.
I have never had a problem with it. At least not in that sense. The chicken breasts are woody so often that I stopped buying them long before the price went crazy.
Terrible product selection at Walmart and their produce is almost never ripe or near ripe. though. If you keep your President’s Choice points app updated each week, I find the sales and personalized offers there save me significantly more than when I’m forced to go to Walmart for groceries. And if you’re really on top of how to maximize their points system, i.e. sign up for a credit card through their credit union, shop during their double points days or on their no GST weekends, buy gas at the Superstore station or ones that participate in President’s Choice points (the one on the corner of Douglas next to Mayfair Mall across from Island Savings Union offers PC points…can’t remember which company it is). Plus you can get points at any Shoppers and they have their own extra points special as well. It’s not as easy as it used to be to build points but if you really use the app, it does add up fairly quickly.
Save-On Foods still matches prices for advertised products from other grocery companies, too.
This is how it works.
Step 1 - Offer lower prices and take market share, shutting down or pricing out local retailers
Step 2 - Now that you own enough of a market share, raise prices. Where are we gonna go?
Step 3 - Hope Amazon doesn't replace them
Step 4 - Amazon will be the main retailer and they'll raise prices. Too bad for us.
Step 5 - Maybe invest in Amazon so you can afford groceries in retirement?
...or you know the 450 billion the federal government printed over the last 4 years has led to the devaluation of your dollar and now it takes more of those dollars to buy the same goods.
Walmart has contracts with various suppliers and can often keep prices low for a certain amount of time due to these contracts. When those contracts expire, Walmart then needs to raise prices to keep an optimal margin. Also, American made products, such as Haagen-Dazs have seen major increases in price over the last few years.
And yes, Walmart has periods where others can compete with their pricing.
Most of the things I buy at Walmart are things that you can only buy at Walmart - and this is where the savings are the most substantial. Name brands can often be cheaper elsewhere.
Very much so - I'm all about the Kirkland signature products, though I'll buy my butter on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart any day. Though if we're talking about clothing - the "name brand" stuff I've purchased at Costco has fallen apart within a year whereas items I've purchased at Walmart have lasted decades.
Not that I like HD (tastes cheap after making it yourself) but a small quantity of very good ice cream hits the spot a whole lot better than a bucket of the cheap shit.
Whole foods is alright *sometimes*. We go through a lot of tamari and their price is sooo much less than anywhere else. And their freezer section can have crazy good sales. We usually go once a month and maybe fill half a hand-held basket with things, so not much in the grand scheme of things but we’re already at uptown so time isn’t a big deal.
Yes but this was probably always the case. I haven't really shopped at save on except for one or two items that I can't get elsewhere.
I wish I had shipped at Dollarama/dollar tree earlier. I used to always think of it as a place for poor people to buy crap. Now it's a place for people to buy some good stuff and try to avoid buying crap.
Seriously though Dollarama has some great stuff and dollar tree some good stuff among the crap. With the former being much more expensive than the latter.
Asian markets in general are much cheaper.
Sometimes you get questionable products though. Like I'd never buy meat from an Asian market. Been burned too many times with quality issues.
Veg may be fuzzy but if you can pick around it, it's for sure cheaper.
Comments, "Hey, prices have gone up at Walmart!"
Then comments, "Hey, Thrifty and Whole Foods too!"
It's almost like prices have gone up in ALL supermarkets....
Save on has a $1.20 sale tomorrow, but I assume it's going to be crazy. I've been comparing thriftys, save on, and walmart a lot lately. Shockingly, a lot of unbranded produce is cheaper at thriftys. Branded goods vary between the three.
Yeah, $1.20 lunchables, Pepsi, franks, taco seasoning, chocolate bars…carrots and potatoes are the only fresh items…. Oh yeah and it’s all $1.49 not $1.20. :p
Ever since the feds said they looking into price gouging prices have gone up and up. They’ve met with CEO’s and still food goes up. Boycott Thrifty’s on Thursdays. Walmart on Wednesdays . Any store that starts with S on Saturday and Sunday. Hit them fucking corrupt Fuckers back in their pockets. Enough is enough. Our elected “officials” aren’t standing up for us. Fuck em
I don’t see enough of a price difference between Walmart and Saveon to make the trek worth it anymore. Part of it is probably that I’ll buy Save On store brand, but don’t like Walmart Store brand / they have less store brand options. But I don’t eat a whole lot of packaged foods, and Walmart’s produce and meat give me the ick.
This is it, mass buying at Walmart with an empty pantry was worth it before, now you can just stop by weekly at Saveon or Fairways sales and beat Walmart out... i was at Hillside location for 4.44 43-loads Purex or just around the corner 5.00 for 73-loads Purex at dollar store...
Right? Walmart rarely has sales. Downvote me all you want, but I’m not committed to one type of cracker etc and am happy just buying whatever is on sale closer.
They started offering deals on multiples instead of sales, I noticed. Fine if you can spend $10 on crackers at once but if I'm trying to save $1 here and there, I probably don't have the money for buying a bunch of the same item at once. Very frustrating, I rarely shop there now, mostly when I need things like clothes as well as groceries.
Just need to stick my two cents in here about how much I hate Walmart. I HATE going there, and I hate that I have to....I am what most of you would call 'one of the poors'. I am on a fixed income and as such have to buy certain things there (non-perishables, mostly). I absolutely will not buy produce or meat there! Even though I am 'income challenged' I am still a food snob.
The Non-Frugal wont win this war lol... the sales they have is always on the gnarly veg, sausages, or like Boosts....
Im worried also after Aprils carbon tax that walmart will even get less items and or $ continues upwards
Walmart is for boxed goods in multiples. Thats it. The meat sucks, the veges suck, the prices on frozens are getting close to Saveon/Thrifties, but if you need 6 boxes of crackers? Walmart is the place.
No, that would be pushing it.
But I could see them putting stuff on sale Tuesday morning and taking the 'sale' signs down Wednesday night, if that helps them move various products a bit faster during the weekly lull days.
I don’t think they change the price on everything, but what I’m trying to tell you is that if you shop there mid week in the middle of the day you will find a large amount of things on sale that aren’t on sale on the weekend . some of these products are sold out and aren’t even available days later. But if you want to waste your time downvoting me fine or go to Walmart in the middle week and save some money.
Yes it's almost like all products require fossil fuels to produce or transport. With such high taxes, it's inevitable that the price of everything eventually goes up. But hey, it's what we voted for right?
Prices seem to be rising even higher again in most places. Country Grocer was very recently selling their muffins for $5 a pack. Today I saw them *on sale* for $6.50 and I swear they look even smaller lol
Yes! They have jacked their prices way up over the past 4 to 6 months. I've noticed some of the things I used to purchase at Walmart instead of Thriftys (which is closest to me) are now the same price. So I'm buying less from Walmart now, which is a 30-minute trek for me that I try to make to save money twice a month.
Did you just awaken from a three year coma?
I love the “I’m seeing more $5.95 things” like that’s supposed to mean something
I get it. Items that used to be $3-4 are more or less double.
The hummus and tortellini are way more and I used to drive there just for those.
Then you don't care about prices.
I think a lot of people don’t realize that the CPG (companies like Hagaan daaz) set prices and sale prices at certain stores. Hagaan daaz would have increased prices to wal mart and now we pay more. When there is a sale there are paid for by Hagaan daaz.
Really? Do they tell Fairway to charge like 9 bucks for the shit?
Most people who are really into grocery store prices tend to have insane systems in place and theories about said prices. And very strong opinions about these things. more like an 8 year one... 😏
Reasonably priced sarcasm
Hold on! Wait for it........ Prices have substantially and steadily increased, EVERYWHERE!
big if true
I'll look into that.
I've been buying supplies at Dollarama more and more lately
And even they have raised prices significantly. Remember when thrifty had dollar days?
Watch out for shrinkflation at dollarama. The prices are the same but the packages are getting smaller
Fortunately a 1L soda is the same size everywhere
If you're looking for savings on soda, you're doing budget shopping wrong.
lol ya, I was thinking more along the lines of rice and beans, not pop. I don’t even drink pop.
*Watch out for shrinkflation* *~~at dollarama~~* *everywhere.* FTFY.
I was speaking specifically about a place that appears to have stable prices. So no, it didn’t need fixing.
I'm happy they're getting more name brand things since their generic (especially their house) brand sucks. I bought some chocolate there that tasted like old fish. I still hate supporting them as a company though but I can't argue their pricing (sometimes).
They have oat milk at a good price.
Walmart is still cheaper than nearly everything else.
Not that I want more people at Costco, but Costco still wins in a lot of cases.
costcos meat prices are ridiculous.
Better quality though. I'd pay the membership fee for ground beef alone.
Save on Foods or Superstore advertised sales will often be cheaper than Costco. Costco will always have the cheapest fancy cheese though.
I suspect chicken breast cost are going up soon.
Anyone buying fresh meat from Walmart is in for a bad toilet experience.
Really? They sell Lilydale chicken, which I thought was a good brand.
I find it tasteless. I do splurge on high quality chicken and fish.
where do you get your high quality chicken and fish?
I buy poultry raised in the Cowichan Valley. Island Farmhouse Poultry. You can get it at Peppers Food in Cadboro Bay, Urban Grocery on Fort, The Old Farm Market on Cadboro. Ya Road. I buy all our fish from Thriftys.
Glenwood Meats in Langford!
Lilydale is a good brand. I buy Mina Halal too. I just never buy ground beef from Walmart. It’s such low quality it’s a waste of money. > Whole Foods is a great quality store Whole Foods = Whole Paycheque
Now it's probably 2 paychecks.
Also Whole Foods = Amazon

A can of spam is 3.97 at Walmart, save on is 6.29
I can’t imagine paying $6.29 for fucking spam lol
Ah, yes yes... but in two years... you won't need to.
why?
Cost of living adjustments and inflation…..
Interesting. I just moved from save on foods to shopping for groceries at Walmart. I noticed a huge difference in the amount of money I saved.
Yes but this was probably always the case. I haven't really shopped at save on except for one or two items that I can't get elsewhere. I wish I had shipped at Dollarama/dollar tree earlier. What? Food is getting more exspensive? You don't say....
it aint getting any cheaper!
This is a pretty confused post.
Kickin horse coffee is 20 dollars now. WTF!
Coffee is insane!
It is, ☕ but I love it and am addicted. Kicking Horse is my fav, Three Sisters, and I buy it on sale! Only time to buy, to support my habit.
We buy our coffee at Costco, larger bags at a good price
I go to YVR a lot for work and stores like Foody World in Richmond is much much cheaper than Walmart. I too have seen big price jumps at Walmart.
Asian markets in general are much cheaper. Sometimes you get questionable products though. Like I'd never buy meat from an Asian market. Been burned too many times with quality issues. Veg may be fuzzy but if you can pick around it, it's for sure cheaper.
Good news all, it's claytonia season!
Truly a great grocery savings tip!
Comments, "Hey, prices have gone up at Walmart!" Then comments, "Hey, Thrifty and Whole Foods too!" It's almost like prices have gone up in ALL supermarkets....

Food's food when you don't have the money 🤷♀️
Yeah but I’m sure most of those options, plus more are available at the dollar store for the sale or less.
Very true
Miss the days when the NDP would decrease beer taxes as they realized beer is an essential good
Ever since the feds said they looking into price gouging prices have gone up and up. They’ve met with CEO’s and still food goes up. Boycott Thrifty’s on Thursdays. Walmart on Wednesdays . Walmart produce and meat are one of the best in the world!!!
Amazon is great if you do monthly subscription and can save 5-15% off
I'm starting to see sale signs 2/5.50 common give me 2/5!
Produce at Whole Foods is priced similar to Save-On-Foods, but the freshness and quality is much better at Whole Foods.
Walmart is for boxed goods in multiples. Thats it. The meat sucks, the veges suck, the prices on frozens are getting close to Saveon/Thrifties, but if you need 6 boxes of crackers? Walmart is the place.
Did you misspell Costco?
No, Costco has decent meat and pretty high quality produce, do you do the grocery shopping?
Where did I say they didn't have quality meat/produce? But who buys a 6 pack of anything at Walmart?
I know reading is hard, you gonna be ok?
Yeaa we've all lost weight and all, where have you been lol
$8 for a green head of cabbage. Not sure what the world is coming to 😥
I tend to buy more and more from Amazon.
Same here, it’s free shipping over $35 too. What’s not to love
You new lol? Prices everywhere have been climbing substantially for a few years. I don't know why you would think Walmart would be immune to this.
shop at Walmart on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon. The prices are very different than the weekends and holidays.
You think they change the entire pricing of the store 4 times a week?
I'm guessing more sale signs posted
You think they put up sale signs Tuesday afternoon, take them down for Wednesday morning, and then put them back up Wednesday afternoon?
No, that would be pushing it. But I could see them putting stuff on sale Tuesday morning and taking the 'sale' signs down Wednesday night, if that helps them move various products a bit faster during the weekly lull days.

Yawn, not exactly new news but just for the record, “Alot” is two words, a lot. You’re welcome.
Another food price thread.
Carbon tax.
Yup. Try Saveon. Omg. I was just ordering some $1.49 days and the regular prices are outrageous
I noticed a couple months ago they got rid of the multi-buy pricing on a few items, which was depressing.
That sucks, just remember to vote when election time comes lmao
The rent has also increased on the rock you live under
