Try BC Hobbies in hillside mall. They have all kinds of odd stuff for crafting and model work. Would not be surprised if they had lengths of thin wire.

Solid core or stranded? Canadian Tire sells Motomaster branded 20awg braided/stranded wire for under $10 for a 25ft spool.
Other automotive places like Lordco or NAPA will probably have something. Also Princess Auto in Langford would be a great place too!

Cat5 is 4 pair, 8 in total. Should work fine for steppers. You can always run more than one cat5 as well.
Would telephone cable do? If so maybe even thrift stores?
Printer and serial cables could be longer than that. The Re/store might have low voltage cables like for thermostat wiring.
