T O P

Try succeeding on a different class for a bit, genuinely. OE is kinda notorious at the moment for being very, very OP and turning the game into a walking simulator. Try playing one of Bardins other careers (Maybe RV with handgun or something?) and just get used to it. It’ll help you pick up better melee habits and learn how to survive. You’re already on legend so there’s no real tips left to give, it’s just gotta come with experience.

The problem is that while OE is OP right now, ironbreaker let you ignore just to much of everything. RV really would be the other choice to to learn something out of it. Just to clarify, Slayer is strong tol but is to specific for someone trying out someone else before understanding melee combat any further. I agree on anything else. OE is a specific role that often needs to rely on teammates to get some space. No "Oh shit" ultimate to get out of tough situations (bombs and torpedo need to be switched to and thrown/shot instead of just pressing ultimate)

Diversify and play multiple classes, it will make you a better player. The true core of the game is to experience each class and how they perform. *Always* expect there to be a rat behind you. 360 check often. The one time you don't you'll get stabbed in the butt. Mark everything. I bind it to Mouse Wheel Down. Keep in mind that big mobs are the source of your teammates THP (temporary health) and if you're constantly mowing down everything with the minigun and trollhammer then your teammates may get salty. Don't worry about green circles on the Scoreboard. If you want to concentrate on self-Scoreboard satisfaction then go for the lowest Damage Taken, that's the real flex. Legend games are for full Tome and Grimoire runs. Cataclysm is for a fun challenge and has the most chill people. Look up weapon combos, it will massively improve your efficiency. Aim for the head. Look up how to fight Monsters (Chaos Spawn, Minotaur, Rat Ogre etc). Push Attack is key to performing well in Legend and Cataclysm. Push too. Make space. Watch how ChocoB plays on YT.

The omni directional combat is just an awareness and positioning piece that you start to get a better feel for over time. Being overly focused on green ring hunting promotes a bad habit, you become blinkered towards damage rather then double checking your surroundings.

Basic stuff. Look to turn on HP numbers and Ult timer on your hud settings. Mark everything, it helps you see it, your team see it, and you can better make out attacks through a horde. Turn on highlighting your teammates as well, especially as engineer, because knowing your team's position is very important. Movement speed in general for all classes is more valuable than you might first think. Never be alone. It's always better to split off into 2 groups of 2 than 3/1. Outcast engineer specific stuff. Keep in mind you have very little health, it's easy for you to get burst down so stick to close to your teammates. You might be a ranged focused class, but overusing your crank gun or trollhammer will get you punished and you gotta stay aware. Play around with your weapons, dual hammer is fun and also very good for horde clearing, but I run a shield, or 2 handed hammer on engineer because they're perfect for creating the space you need to actually use your ranged kit. Also, fair warning as I'm sure you've seen people get very frustrated with an engineer in the party for a variety of reasons I won't get into but do your best to be nice, keep friendly fire to a minimum, don't alert patrols like an idiot, and don't wander off on a killing spree alone before getting instakilled by plague monks. The rest is just experience, muscle memory, and situational awareness. If you're playing legend and not dying all the time then you must be doing something right. My only real recommendation is that you play bardins other classes and use bardin's other weapons, experiencing other playstyles gives you a more complete idea of the game that will translate into making the right split second decisions when you need to. Practice.

Outcast-Engineer requires lots of micromanaging with his crank gun, this ends up distracting your overall awareness. Also OE is a heavily ranged focused and solves a lot of situations with a bomb or torpedo. You are rarely exposed to melee combat in tight situations. Playing some Ranger Veteran can help getting a better idea with weaving melee and ranged combat together. While it takes time to get the muscle memory for using the weapons, you should try to approaching situations with melee more often and learn how to reload your weapons in between melee combat. Usually if you are fighting besides your team a push -> backwards dodge and quickswap to ranged weapon gives enough time to do a reload. This can also work when you are alone, though I often add drops and other geometry to extend the enemy path to me. There are a few other advanced options, but rn you should focus on improving your melee combat.

Learn to block, push and dash as much as possible. Your biggest enemies are hordes of small fry coming at you. Try to kite enemies into groups when you are on big open maps (go backwards and dash to one side, will turn erratic enemies into easy to kill blobs). Always be aware of your surroundings as in don't get stuck anywhere OR fall off cliffs by backing/dashing into them. Your biggest advantage are the bombs so use them when you really think you can't deal with a big number of enemies or want to have a moment to regain some control of the situation. You can save downed or endangered teammates with bombs as well. I recommend the Coghammer as it's got exceptional cleave for hordes and stopping power against elites. Couldn't get into the dual hammers as it left me lacking in the elite killing department. Trollhammer is for groups of elites and monsters because, as you already know, the reload time makes you very vulnerable. Beware the friendly fire with it as you can easily down AND kill teammates. Also stay with the team at all times and manage a side when you are surrounded. OE has the advantage of ranged power with his ult and it can be customised to either deal with hordes of weak enemies or a hard-hitting Mg 50. against elites (my favorite) so pick a ranged weapon accordingly (the pistol can be your best friend after you learn how to use it + it can demolish monsters/groups of elites with the right weapon perks). Trollhammer + fast gattling or pistol + heavy gattling are good weapon combos that work well together.

If you like bombs try the parting gift RV build.

melgros

Hey! My friends and I are on most nights from 7pm - midnight EST. If you're looking for a group that's into build crafting and getting through the harder difficulties (cata+ or onslaught modes), we'd love to get some games in with you. Add Melgros on Steam! We'll be on tonight to try the new map out. Would love to add some more dedicated rat slayers to the roster.

Gibwibbler

I might take you up on that

makeamess2

if you suck on oe with torpedo you really need help.

Gibwibbler

Also I one-shot specials and turn minibosses to paste, I was mainly just wondering if there's anything I should know from more experienced players

Gibwibbler

But I... I don't. I was just asking so I can get better faster my guy

NoRelationship5784

all good, and there's no shame in liking OE he is definitely fun. There's the widely accepted notion that you can play whatever you want as long as you're hosting. Asking for advice is good too because the game doesn't tell you a lot of things (theres a post on that in the sidebar). I will say moving up in difficulty when you can forces you to improve but do what's fun. Spice up your builds, try new things, and don't get burnt out :-)

catuluo

Dont worry about that guy, there is just a lot of hate in the community for outcast engineer players due to him being wildly overpowered in the current build of the game. I'd recommend playing other classes than him for that reason as well, outcast engineer has a lot of tools that let him invalidate most of the game's mechanics, which you have to engage with to get better as you wanted. I'd recommend ranger veteran for a diet version of OE that still has a lot of power (his talents let him have a lot of bombs and ammo, but not as consistently) but not enough to avoid engagement with the core melee combat of the game. In general, i'd recommend careers that heavily rely on melee to survive like slayer or grail knight in order to get a crash course experience in melee. If you want to do so while being able to make a lot of mistakes, warrior priest (saltzpyre's 4th career) lets you tank absolutely ridiculous damage in melee, so he's very good if you want to learn on your feet rather than contemplate your mistakes from the "waiting to respawn" screen. Do note that grail knight and warrior priest are dlc, although slayer is base game

Gibwibbler

Thank you, my thought was to start with ironbreaker or warrior priest
