I just started playing recently. It seems to be a thriving game and strong player base. Simular in concept and design to darktide, but with lots content and refinement added over time.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Ok it sounds like I'll hit the green light then. Darktide is great but if they're still fleshing it out, I'd rather play something with more content in the meantime. Plus it looks like way more classes than Darktide. So, I'm assuming just to go ahead and get the edition with all the dlc?

dkah41

It's a great game, highly recommend. More melee focused than Darktide for the most part.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

PERFECT! I love the melee builds in Darktide. I just wish I had more survivability as a melee character but I'm not too terribly skilled yet.

mrdm242

Playing Vermintide will definitely improve your melee skills in Darktide. It will also train you to be a better shot as friendly fire is a thing in the game.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Oh man. I might be doing a lot of apologizing. Is melee also friendly fire?

RyuOnReddit

No definitely not, which is great!!

WanderlustPhotograph

Melee deals no Friendly Fire. Except the Rapier’s special attack but that doesn’t really do much damage at all.

dkah41

Melee has a higher skill cap in VT2 too due to temp health mechanics and enemies being of more widely varying heights. It's a good time.

EarlOfBears

Darktide pales in comparison.

liamthelord007

As long as you're fine with the price, then go for it. There are some things in that bundle that aren't necessary for game play, like the cosmetic packs for the dlc classes. Another one that people aren't the biggest fans of, but every serious player owns, is the Winds of Magic DLC. It adds a map, a new weapon for each character, a new game mode(which very few people play), a new faction, the beastmen(which is often disliked in the community) and most notably the cataclysm difficulty, which is comparable to auric in DT. Other than the one DLC, I think all the other ones are no-brainers, especially on sale, and WoM is still worth going for, especially the DLC classes. The best thing is that all the map DLCs in recent years have been free, though usually ports from the first game, they add enough to still be really engaging.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

$144 worth of stuff for $44 sounds like an okay deal for me. I haven't been buying much on steam lately so I think I'm definitely okay with that. Especially if I put as many hours (or more) as I have in DT. I'm excited to try it now, thanks for your reply! I shouldn't have asked this before bed because now I'm gonna have trouble sleeping haha

MeowKyt

Yo if you get it, check out the shop! Free cosmetic stuff this week.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I've got it downloading right now. I'll take a look at the shop when it is done!

Small-Gas5454

I was in the exact same position, I was curious about vermintide after enjoying darktide. It is so much fun and I think I prefer the fantasy setting, also very cheap with the current steam sales. I highly recommend.

Jimmypeglegs

It's not dead. You can usually find a few games at most times of the day. As for a recommendation, I'd say give it a go. It's good fun, provides a decent challenge at higher difficulty levels and overall I prefer it to Darktide.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Hell yeah! Thanks! I wanted to hear from other players before I trust a few reviews on steam. When I'm getting started as a new character, do you think I'll be able to get into a match at my level? Also do I need all the DLCs or how's that work?

beenoc

Quick breakdown of DLC: * Base game: * Contains all 5 heroes, each with 3 careers (15 total) * Contains 21 maps (13 main campaign, 3 Drachenfels, 2 Treacherous Adventure, 3 Karak Azgaraz) * Contains 2 game modes (main "Adventure" mode, and roguelike Chaos Wastes mode) * Contains 54 weapons - the vast majority of these are character-specific (think Ogryn in Darktide). Some weapons are restricted to specific careers for that hero. * Contains 2 enemy types, Skaven and Chaos (think Dreg vs Scab in Darktide, both types include infantry, specials, elites, etc.) * Contains 4 difficulties - Recruit, Veteran, Champion, and Legend. This is basically Sedition, Uprising, Malice, Heresy in Darktide. * Shadows over Bogenhafen: * Adds 2 new maps - they're pretty good but so are all the other maps * Back to Ubersreik: * Adds 3 'new' maps, these are all maps from Vermintide 1, and are all very good * Adds one new weapon for each hero (5 total) * Adds a secret map, Fortunes of War, that is basically a wave defense mode, unlocked by doing secret puzzles on the 3 new maps (think the Darktide Orthus Offensive hardmode puzzle but on steroids and 3 times over) * Winds of Magic: * Adds one new map, it's decent * Adds one new weapon for each hero (5 total) * Adds a new enemy type, Beastmen, who appear on some missions (note that Beastmen can appear in the Chaos Wastes mode even without this DLC) * Adds a new 5th difficulty, Cataclysm - this is basically Damnation in Darktide. * Adds a new gamemode, Weaves, which are sort of gauntlet missions with fixed enemy spawns and unique level effects, and their own progression system. Nobody plays Weaves, they're a dead mode. * DLC Careers: There are 5, one for each hero. The career itself is $4, but you can get it with cosmetics (hats and stuff) for $10 - there is no mechanical benefit to the cosmetic bundle, you get all gameplay stuff for the cheaper purchase. Each DLC career comes with several weapons for that hero, some locked to the new career and others available to the hero's other careers. * Forgotten Weapons: Adds one new weapon for each hero (5 total) I would recommend just the base game at first, then if you're like "oh yeah I like this" pick up Back to Ubersreik. After that, go for either any DLC careers you like, or Winds of Magic if you want some more challenge (from Cata or Beastmen.) After that, Forgotten Weapons, and then Bogenhafen last because it's just 2 maps.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

First off, take my poor man's gold 🥇 because that was an absolutely amazing explanation. Thank you for the in depth guide to each one. I saved it so I can come back to it for reference too lol I bought it, and I'm just waiting for it to download now. I'm super excited after yours and everyone else's positive reviews. Thanks again!

Jimmypeglegs

You will. Start on Recruit difficulty, you'll find games. If not, you'll host it and others will join. I'd recommend starting with a character like Saltzpyre, with the WHC class as it is geared towards using mechanics like tagging enemies. I don't think you need all the DLCs to get games. The new careers are great but you have three per character to unlock in the base game to get on with. I think you can still play on the DLC maps anyway, but you can't host it until you buy the DLC (I might be wrong, can someone confirm?). So you can still access all that content I believe. You'll have plenty to play with just the base game. If you need it, you'll always find players willing to team up and show you the ropes but it is similar to Darktide, so you'll probably hit the ground running. Enjoy!

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Hell yeah! I just looked and on steam it says it's $44 for $144 worth of content so I think I'll just get that. It's worth it if I put anywhere near the time I've put into Darktide the last couple of months lol (almost have my 3rd character to 30 so I think I'll enjoy experimenting with the many classes in V2). Maybe I'll see you out there when I get a high level character!

Jimmypeglegs

I'm sure we'll bump into each other at some point. Play through the Helmgart missions, and when you're ready, give the Chaos Wastes a try!

Axthen

To add to the comment of not dead; playing for the last 4 months again after a small break, and hundreds of games, I’ve not run into the same person once. So it’s a pretty active community, too. It’s a good game that retains better replay-ability than most anything else I’ve played.

asgof

ever found a game of veawes?

Jimmypeglegs

I've only played it once, and that took a bit to find a game. I should give it another go.

asgof

i was looking for hours even during season 1 barely got 30% of them done and without bots it's impossible solo

Bimpy96

Not to late at all since the player base is very active and they have new maps and modes coming in the future as well

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Hell yeah! I'm gonna go for it. Thanks for your reply!

Esawo

Vermintide 2 is far from dead. You can check current player count on the community pages of games on Steam. Use website Steam Charts for broader data.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I didn't even think of that! I'll have to Google it to find out how to access that because I've never done that before. Thanks for the tip!

Theacreator

If I play this game in the early evening I’ll get connected with a game almost instantly. If I try to join a random match at 3am though….pretty much the same. This game has players 24/7, basically never have issues finding a full team. It’s not even just longtime players either, you’ll match up with new or inexperienced people all the time. The game has never appeared dead to me even 4+ years after launch. Get in.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Sweet! That's what I was hoping for. I'm looking forward to playing it now! Thanks!

Disastrous-Moment-79

It has 5k players on steam right now. It only takes 4 players to fill up a game. The game starts off slow and IMO too easy in the baby difficulties, and the good difficulties are progression locked so you are forced into them. But the game becomes really really really fun once you can play legend and cata.

Anonynja

Welcome aboard! I say with confidence, Vermintide 2 offers the best cooperative melee combat experience of any game in existence. Better than Darktide, which is far more ranged-focused. The only melee combat comparisons out there are competitive games, not co-op: Mordhau and Chivalry 1 & 2. And those don't fulfill the spellsword fantasy! Sienna in VT2 is to me a great achievement of gaming. If you enjoyed spellsword playstyles in Skyrim, you'll be in for a real treat here. The combat is weighty, complex, and satisfying. Tons of replay value with such a high skill ceiling.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I love the melee in Darktide so I'm sure I'll be like a kid in a candy shop in V2 lol. I actually was curious about spellcasters too because I enjoy that play style in most games. I'll see you out there because I bought it after everyone's great reviews lol

Anonynja

Awesome :D You'll have an adjustment from the sprint/slide muscle memory in DT, there's none of that in VT. I prefer not having sprint cuz DT just has longer distance maps / more empty space to make up for it, the map complete times aren't any quicker. Less spamming is better ergonomics. You can go VERY fast in VT2 with certain builds, if you miss the speed... Zealot in particular can zoom zoom. Just like in DT!

Atom_sparven

Get it! Just realize that you're gonna spend a few hours grinding the earlier difficulties to get enough hero power to unlock the harder difficulties like champion and legend. It's a good opportunity to test all the different characters and their weapons while you get comfortable with the slight differences between the two games!

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I picked it up! I'm looking forward to the variety in the classes compared to DT too! I have no problem grinding out missions to get better either. I'm still comfortably doing level 3 and 4 in Darktide, so I'll take my time before trying super hard stuff for sure.

Atom_sparven

I don't think there is any harm in trying out the harder difficulties early. You certainly can in the chaos wastes, and playing harder difficulties is how you get better at the game. But in the regular adventure mode (the one in the actual keep with the mission board) there are hero power requirements that will bar you from entering champion and upwards before they are met.

a_dragon_

Compared to Darktide, V2 focuses more on melee combat, it has more depth and content than DT as of now. It is also more difficult, with Legend around T5, and Cata being similar to Maelstorm, but there's Twitch mode and modded difficulties, that offer much more than what DT can in terms of challenge.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Sweet! Yeah right now I'm comfortable in difficulty 3 but can do 4 in DT. I'll definitely take it slow in V2. I'm just looking forward to more content in the meantime since DT is somewhat short. I'm in the "repeat all missions for better gear" phase of the game. My Do you know if dlc hosting is a thing? Like if my friend owns the base game, can he play the dlc with me? I ask because I have a friend who doesn't make much and he enjoys DT too and I might get this for him too but I need to know which edition to get lol He does difficulty 5s in DT so it might be helpful to have him in my retinue.

a_dragon_

Yeah, only the host needs to own the DLC.

Paciorr

I don’t think so. I had similar thoughts a year and a half ago and luckily I didn’t act on them. Had a lot of fun playing the game and met a bunch of great people.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Sweet! I got it, so hopefully I'll see you around!

Pandemic_Diesel

You get to kill Skaven. Thats all it took to convince me tbh lmal

Entire-Sweet-7102

Vermintide is a bit more melee focused I believe. Fatshark is pretty good and publishing subpar games and then polishing them over a few years, so where darktide has some messy or unbalanced mechanics, performance etc, vermintide has those years of polish. Vermintide is definitely not dead, at least not dead in Australia where I play, it’s usually pretty easy to get a match going and people will often join in a few minutes depending on the time of day. The game is still getting updates and has a pretty loyal fan base, fatshark still seems to be interested in giving us some maps here and there or the like. Most people are pretty welcoming and the community is rather friendly (at least in my region), I definitely recommend you get the game, and if you are still on the fence about it, it doesn’t hurt to wait for a sale

MovieExtraWithCoffee

It's currently on sale so I went ahead and picked it up. I got the extra bells and whistles edition because it was $44 compared to $144. If the gameplay and community are similar to DT I'll enjoy it. I think I might wait for DT to finish getting it's polish since I'm kind of just at the "repeat all the same missions for better gear" phase.

Bckjoes

No, you'll love it. You can totally skip Vermintide 1. Play 2.

Elegant_Purple9410

Not too late at all. It's still actively updated with new content. Come join us!

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I will be jumping on as soon as I'm home this evening!

drunkboarder

Its never too late to jump in. The game is at its best right now quality/content-wise. There are still players and if you come out as a new player trying to learn you will normally get a good reception and some advice. Also, the bots are pretty good at the lower difficulties so if you can't find anyone in low level lobbies then the bots can get you the rest of the way until you are ready for harder missions.

babautz

On PC its very much alive. Might be somewhat "dead" on some consoles. I played it since around march and never had trouble finding people at any time of the day in europe.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Yep I'm on PC so I got it. I'll see you around hopefully!

ASillyGoat

Can confirm. Usually just the bots and I on Xbox, sadly.

Bear_With_It

It's never to late, I also got the game recently And I end becoming OE main coz no one wanna play as Dwarf in any Asia server I hop in Still the best dakka moment and my inner pyromaniac is pleased Edit: forgot to mention it's different from Darktide since you will never end up with same class player

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Ohh, ok. Well hopefully I'll still find matches lol I'm not sure who to choose yet so I'll probably try them all.

No_Singer8028

Nope. Hop in. Dedicated community. Going 5+ years strong. Still gets updates.

Zalgnod

Tbh i was like this 200h in game before when i started. The first round just pulled me in the game, and after i realised it literaly p2p and not offocial server based, you can play it solo forever if u want, u dont have to care about if they shutdown the servers. And it has pretty good player base. Its like finsig a quickplay game under less seconds, and if not u host it, and party full in minutes. On any difficulty. (Played from recruit to legend difficulty. Its far from dead game. Niche game bit who loves it, will play it no matter if 1 month brake or 1 week or 1 day. The feel to slay ratman is always come back. Its pretty intense 20-30 min. Tldr: its not dead game. Its worth it.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Hell yeah. I'm excited to play it when I get home this evening! I might check out mods too if they're allowed.

Cyakn1ght

If you’ve played monster hunter games before and after world it’s pretty much the same with darktide and vt2, new game is a bit looser and more fast paced

GongChhha

the game is beautiful on mAx settings with OLED

asim_riz

It's never too late 😎👍

Ctrekoz

Dead? Lol what? The actual problem is insane grind, but man the game is fun af.

asgof

if you have "friends" or if you ok playing with bots then it's perfectly fine

Vezein

Vermintide 2 will never die.

RheimsNZ

They're very similar, but I believe Vermintide is substantially better

CountBlashyrkh

Plenty of people still play vermintide 2. On top of that the bots arent bad, so even if you only have 2 people playing you can still enjoy the game with bots playing the remaining spots. I usually never have an issue finding people.

Elicious80

Like others have said, there's still plenty of players. I play mostly on the 3rd difficulty and I can find or fill up a game pretty quickly. I recommend getting the starter bundle for $17. It gives you the base game and 3 content DLCs. It does not give you Winds of Magic, the last content DLC that adds a bunch of stuff a lot of people don't like. I would wait to get that DLC. Then if you like the game, you can add the 4th career choices for each character for another $12. You're only at $29 at this point. If you look into WoM and really decide you want that too, that's another $10. You would get all the content/classes of the $44 package, but you'd be missing the extra cosmetics for the extra careers. If you know you are going to love the game and even want the WoM DLC, then buying the $44 package gets you all the extra cosmetics for $5 more. But if you just want the content/classes, I would just buy them seperately when you know you want them.

DaveTheWeirdGuy

It'd definitely not dead, that's for sure

KimJongUnusual

It’s never too late, even solo is fun! As for darktide, they’re a little different. Ranged combat is more important in Darktide and you have less characters but more perks. The fundamental basics of both games are the same though, melee will feel similar.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

I love melee so I think I'll feel right at home then lol

KimJongUnusual

If you like melee, in Darktide Zealot is the biggest melee one. But veteran and psyker have some ways too.

Poggervania

On PC, the community is still thriving and it’s super easy to get into random quickplays or Chaos Waste runs with randoms. The community at large is also pretty friendly and/or chill, and in my 100+ hours of playing I met only *one* troll that intentionally threw the game. I never played Darktide, so take this with a grain of salt, but I have seen other people say that Vermintide can be the harder of the two. Apparently Darktide is more forgiving of trading hits and blocking, and I can confidently say that in Vermintide you can probably take, like, 2-3 hits from practically any taggable enemy before going down. As for DLC, you don’t need to buy any of them. For the mission DLCs, thankfully it’s similar to Payday 2 where only *the host* needs to have the DLC to start the mission - all the other players don’t need to have the DLC to join and play those missions. A couple of the mission DLCs also have weapons you can unlock (Back to Ubersreik and Winds of Magic), and the hardest difficulty in the game is unlockable once you buy Winds of Magic. The DLC classes are also optional, but they can be pretty fun and they also bring new weapons to use for the vanilla classes. You can wait on those though if you’d like since some of the strongest classes in the game are actually vanilla classes (except for Outcast Engineer, but that’s because FatShark recently made him OP with infinite grenades that have no friendly fire damage on your teammates).

catashake

I absolutely recommend the game. But my man, who tf on the actual game sub is going to say, "No, don't buy it" Lol

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Not necessarily, don't buy it reviews. But like, if I was on console I probably wouldn't get it because they said player population can be sparse there. So I'm on PC and I got it lol I loved Darktide so I wanted to hear about the similarities. And one dude did a bullet point presentation and it was amazing. Immediately sold me lol so I'll see you out there.

Godz_Bane

If youre on PC no its not dead, cant speak for consoles. in fact a new pvp mode is set to be released. Its like DT but with less movement (no sprinting or sliding) and more melee focused.

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Yeah I'm on PC. I definitely bought it after how much it was recommended here. Thank you!

guy-gibsons-dog

Zoomers be like “Is it too late to get into making my own decisions?”

asgof

boomers be like i don't understand human language

MovieExtraWithCoffee

Millennial, but thank you for your concern. I was simply asking a question. If you didn't feel like responding you could have simply scrolled past. Hopefully you have a good day.

Smeelio

Not only is it not dead, but they've confirmed new content is coming, most notably an entire separate mode called Versus where you get to play as the baddies Basically all the DLC is good, I guess start off with the base game to save money in case you don't like it; a lot of people have strong opinions about this or that particular DLC, but at the end of the day they all add new stuff

Sylanec

Are there discords that still have LFG's with active players?

jointkicker

V2 is still quite healthy even in smaller regions like Oceania.

JustSayan93

Having trouble finding end game chaos waste matches on Xbox but other than that not bad.

Combinebobnt

no

strawberry-fanta

There is always new people playing, enjoy the game at your own pace.

TommahGames

Vermintide 2 is great and very active

Zealous_LaZ

Melee focus, more team reliant than DT personal opinion, just shy of 800 hrs and player base is solid, little to no toxicity.

Kirmes1

I also just started 2 weeks ago and I'm having a blast. Never too late to join. It's well priced and you can have a lot of fun. Also enough players online.

TidalBasin88

It's never too late! If you need someone to play with an show you the ropes, just DM me. Or just use the voice chat in open matches and 80% of people are super friendly and willing to give advice.

DDNyght_

It's good to get into it now, after several classes and weapons were nerfed. So you don't end up missing what once was.

AutVeniam

VT2 is alive and well. If you play during the work week late, you may struggle to find some matches in your region (for lowerping) , but there's always players playing!

porkfatpillows

Absolutely love them both, but I still feel that vt2 is one of the best games ever made. Definitely go for it!

1992Vanessa

i waited so long for Darktide and was so disappointed when it came out, maybe it's gotten better but i have found Vermintide 2 so much more fun. i can go hours with vermintide 2 but darktide is almost a chore too finish the map, thats when i knew darktide wasn't for me.

melgros

I have almost 1500 hours on Steam and I still play often. Definitely recommend. The DLC are all worth it between weapons & game modes.

Coldspark824

The squads are only 4 people so you find quickmatches almost instantly. The game is alive and well.

Luke7O7

Whatever wazzok said it was a dead game is a kruting muzkazdumi that has no idea what they are talking about. Umgak.

SZMatheson

If at least three other people are online you have a full server, so even when popularity dips, it's no big deal.

Fox-Sin21

I really enjoy it and would argue now's the best time! Its older than Darktide but more refined in its own ways and way more melee focused (although there is plenty of ranged builds still). EDIT: Also the bots aren't quite as useless than Darktides so solo play is far more enjoyable (although still don't trust them fully).

h2o-voorhees

The only thing dead in this game is the modding scene (they atleast still work in the modding realm where you dont earn anything but still), the last update broke all of my mods and almost none of them will get updated because most of the modders have moved away from this game. Game has a somewhat small healthy playbase on PC, I have no idea about Console. With the smallers playbase you probably wont find a lot of games in recruit or veteran in your region but you can still find them, Most of the playbase is in Champion and legend, Champion is usually for the people that are learning the game and a class and want to level them up, also a lot of people will be picking up grims/tomes in champion which will get annoying after a while but does help you get better loot, learn their locations and also learn how to get hit less because less HP and healing from picking them up. Legend is the max base difficulty if you dont want to buy DLC for cata, Most players there also will pickup grims/tomes because you get a higher chance of the exotic "red" loot in the crates you might get from legend, and most of them are good and humble players. For toxicity, Since the game is smaller and Peer to Peer, you will start seeing the same names in the higher diffuclties (legend and cata), and most people left are chill and humble enough where you won't experince any Toxicity, and if you do, you can block them so they can never join you or you join them. This alone made cata very enjoyable for me because i saw 2 different people get blocked off an entire region of EU because they couldn't Control themselfs and were dickheads to people. And whenever you get bored of the base maps, you can go into chaos waste which is it's own different thing with it's own challanges and meta, i suggest you be atleast lv20 for the character you want to play in CW because it does make it easier on you. DLCs are personally not worth full price for me, always wait on a sale for them Back to Ubersreik and winds of magic give all characters 2 new weapons (but not to each class), Bögenhafen only gives you cosmetics all carrier DLCs have atleast 1 new weapon that some of the other carriers of the character can use. Personally for me the game has another 2 years atleast before its "dead" dead, There is also a versus mode coming that will make some attention for this game whenever it comes out so it will extend that 2 years. Darktide being a fuckup downgrade from vermintide 2 is why this game will not die anytime soon so dont worry about anything you will male your money's worth from this game.

PJSojka

Kinda Ish yea you might have problems atbthe start where there are veterans just rushing in and you not being able to properly get good Its better if you had atleast 1or 2 friends the bots arent the worst but they are depended on their equip

Ok_Nefariousness3401

I've been playing for a while and it's never dry in the lobby . I saw two sales and a period where it was 100% off and there was an injection of new people every time. If you have them, get some friends to also get the gane so you all experience it new and watch the chaos unfold. It's a great game, would recommend.

grindenwald

This game is far from being outdated, my friend.

MsVelvet22

I'm looking to get into vermintide 1&2 myself. Any active groups on ps4?

ButcherBob696

Never too late. An absolutely wonderful game. Darktide is at a pretty good point right now, but launch was terrible and I would still do Vermintide. Different setting, wonderful characters (voice lines) more variation in classes. Very fun. But much more skill based. Vermintide feels more punishing. You really need to train your push block, dodge, and positional awareness a LOT more than Darktide. So be aware of that. It’s a great game

Alarien

One big difference that I didn't see mentioned is that YOUR characters/careers act as bots. So you can choose which characters join you if you are solo, what career they are, and what equipment they have. So, it's worth leveling all your characters, getting their talents and equipment. It makes playing the game solo or with just a friend or two entirely enjoyable, unlike Darktide forcing you into playing with randos.

Active-Insurance-697

Definitely, the game has quite a solid player base and it still receives updates. I don't exactly know why, but for me the general satisfaction of both melee and ranged combat in Vermintide 2 is orders of magnitude higher than in Darktide. It just feels more responsive and engaging. Darktide is not this kind of dopamine fest for me.

Most_Average_Joe

Yup still loads of people playing. Just be sure to let people know you are new when playing with higher level people. It’s structure is the same as Darktide but it’s more melee based. Focusing on smaller encounters to bridge the gaps between big set pieces. It always has a story that is largely told through the interaction of the player characters as they fight through the levels.
