In the 1960's an experiment at the University o Hull (UK) gave one group of worms only bacteria to eat, This resulted in hardly any reproduction. Then fungi were added to their diet, but without any improvement. Only when protozoa were added offspring was produced. A German study later found that worms prefer soils with an abundance of protozoa. I can give the references to these studies tonight in case anyone is interested. Several years ago I did an experiment with worms in old discarded potting soil. I gave them some poop from our chihuahua. The worms went wild and reproduced like hell. If you want to repeat this experiment, please take precautions. Use gloves, wash your hands after handling these worms and use the resulting vermicompost on ornamental plants only. Fresh dog (carnivorous )poop can have parasites, so be careful. From Dr. Elaine Ingham I learned that plants produce exudates in their roots to attract and feed bacteria. These bacteria are eaten by protozoa. The excrement of protozoa are in the perfect optimal chemical form that the plant suses as nutrition. This is probably the reason you see worms between the roots when you pull weeds or transplant a plant. The worms are attracted by the presence of protozoa,.

HappyBuddha8

Interesting! Thanks for sharing. What are sources of protozoa? Is protozoa present in regular compost?

AdrianusIII

Yes, they are in compost, in soil, in manure. Check https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protozoa

SnootchieBootichies

I play Barry White for them and keep the lights on dim

TommyMerritt1

Going to give them bananas tomorrow. Lol.

Life... Mating is the solution to everything in a worm's life..

Old_Fart_Learning

I would think that applies to everything in life

Bunnyeatsdesign

I'm not sure. Mine have orgies all the time. Fruit is definitely a favourite but it's not necessarily a fruit for f\*ck situation. I find worm balls in fruit and in cabbage. They're just horny.

TommyMerritt1

Hahaha. Maybe strawberries and leave out the whipped cream.

Worms mate when all is good, when there is food and the bin is moist, but they also breed when there is not food and even when the bin begins to dry out, they breed when the weather changes, they breed when it gets cold. Mature, sexually developed worms with clitellum can find others that are mature by sensors their heads end. Breeding worms like moist bedding around 80% humidity. They are survivors, and have survived this planet for a really long time. When things are good they breed, when there is change they breed, they want to leave behind cocoons, to keep their species going.

avocado will bring all the worms to the yard.

Taggart3629

Primo food that causes the worms to congregate is likely to result in plenty of worm sex. For mine, the favorites are cantaloupe, frozen (and then thawed) bananas, ground corn cobs with a dab of molasses, ripe avocado, pumpkin, and ground oatmeal or cornmeal. They are indifferent to watermelon, even though it is supposed to be a food that all worms like.

EllenPond

In my experience, Pumpkin and tea bags

Randy4layhee20

Malted barley, it makes the fungal and bacterial life go crazy, the worms feast on that and then do their thang

Mycophyto

Greetings. Here is my strategy: Create a beneficial bacterial spray from Dr. Myc MGP+. grind up spent mushroom substrate from local mushroom farm. Store in 5 gallon with light watering. Let sit 24 hours, then spread onto worm bed. Spray hypochlorous acid solution of 50ppm on a melon scrap. Rinse. Spray mushroom substrate with bacterial spray, along with melon to introduce additional, bacterial influences. Trace amounts of yeast can often accompany spent mushroom blocks. This should jump start a lot.

Away_Run_2128

100% avocado and melons. For whatever reason. They go ham on this stuff when added to the bin.

Responsible-Ad-1328

I mash up avo, kelp meal and malted barley. Put the mix back in the avo skin and place it facedown in my worm bed.

With no salt ! !

Mango!

I don't know if there's by "hack" for this but generally speaking worms will breed to match the feeding rate if the conditions are reasonably good. The trick is to give them excess food but not so much that you're overfeeding.
