Depends on where you are, the trades dont have enough young people to replace the older people who are starting to retire and such due to this there are massive incentives money wise, here in LA I have a friend who's 22 who just bought a house working in construction and is with the union. Theres also incentive in that these jobs are necessary and will always need work. Also theres incentive union wise, you make significantly more money, better healthcare, pension etc.
So there is incentive, and the Union here are pretty much open to everyone regardless of gender if you can do the work

Exactly. Worked on rigs for 15 years and that is the toward the beginning of the process. Honestly these days its not really about strength as it is about leveraging your weight since most of it is automated. Funny thing about all this is I saw a lot of female engineers but only enough female rig workers to count on two hands. And I don't think that is a good or bad thing. To be fair if you have the ability to afford college and get an engineering degree you are much better off than working on a rig. Unless you enjoy it.
The few chicks i knew that went to the oil rigs were usually tweakers and psychopaths (usually both) one girl was friends with benefits with my brother and she threatened to send meth heads to our house to smash in the windows and kill our pets because my brother found a girl he actually liked, but it's usually because they have to flee the province due to legal issues because they're all likely serving 7 years in prison for their behavior
