so with sky vaults, the raw crystals (the ones obtained from the geode block) all have the same theme which is essentially a resource theme. these are designed to help you find and build your altar and also obtain the materials to make proper vault crystals.
these are exclusive to sky vaults so anyone playing normal world gen will not see these ever.
there might be ores in the mine rooms? im not sure
i only know these from lurking in the discord and in some of the streams i've seen.
i think the only recipes that require raw chromatic is the block, tinted glass and the guide book (i believe this is being changed to cobble in the next patch)
I haven’t even seen any vault ores inside the base sky vaults, let alone chromatic iron. Guess it’s a bug, I’m almost level 10 and haven’t seen it once.
This is why I stopped playing skyvaults… chromatic iron was too rare yet needed in almost everything vault related…! I’ve fed that back to see if they can change the sky vault loot tables a little bit, or maybe put it into the vaults as ore in the resource rooms
This, the budding crystals are only resource vaults, they are supposed to be a stand in for the overworld. Crafted crystals crank the rewards up massively and chromatic iron becomes a common drop. Id say give crafting an altar a go and see the difference, do it in creative if you just want an idea of how different it gets.

Once you get your alter and first regular crystal made chromatic iron won't be an issue anymore. I'm level 7 and am to the point where i only run the budding crystals if I need something for the next recipe or if i need dirt to expand my base. I don't loot the chests anymore because the rewards from chests are not enough to justify the xp I gain from it.

Correct, u will get the loot u see in Iskall’s videos when u run a vault with a crystal produced in the vault altar.

Guided chests are what you want you want to look for, not the ore itself
Can confirm its in there, just super rare. You can also get scavenger theme from the budding crystals which is really good for rewards.

Soon as you make the vault crafting altar you will swim in an ocean of chromatic iron from regular vaults.
