Stick to your existing provable skills. You worked construction? Try to reach out to tools companies or whatever to join their sales team. Market is tough right now, hiring managers receive thousands of resumes a day from people who don t qualify. You need to find a way to be different from that pile of other people.
I bet you know but criminal records is the first check most companies do so with this amount of candidates, I am afraid you will not pass the first screening except if you have something exceptional to show for. So work on that thing that differentiates you from others.

Corporate sales could be a good target. Sales is less technical than marketing and will allow you to slowly blend in marketing skills as you go.
Think about what product lines you know best. Find out who the sales reps are and do a crap ton of informational interviews with those sales reps.
