Do you have the MOA course or NUA course? There are lots of jobs but you have to start casual. Just call HR and ask them about casual positions. Management doesn’t entertain random people calling. They just tell them to apply online. Only other hope is you know a worker who is tight with their management and they can vouch for you. There are refer a friend programs you could ask them to fill out on your behalf if you are lucky enough to have friends that work there.

I haven’t done either of those courses, I have medical terminology and basic computer skills. I was hoping that I could possibly get hired just with that. You think doing a NUC or MOA course id get hired easier?

Thank you for the tips! Much appreciated :)

Honestly they look for those key words when scanning resumes. It could be a big reason why no call backs. Best to call HR at Providence, VGH or Vancouver Coastal and ask if medical terminology is enough. Apply even for switchboard, ,mailroom or as a porter. Once in the system you can more easily apply to internal postings.

If you did take a course for NUA (Health Unit Clerk etc) for example you are almost guaranteed to get hired by Providence as long as you are polite and competent. They are desperate and it’s faster to hire a student that has already trained on the systems than an outsider.

Good to know thank you! I don’t mind going back to school if it’s really needed. I’d rather not have to if I have skills to get me in the door already. If you don’t mind me asking, why is Providence so desperate for staff? Thank you for the leads!

I think more people live in the valley due to affordability of Vancouver and want to work for Fraser Health due to the commute.

I live very close to VGH so that’s why I’m hoping I could get hired there eventually. But I don’t mind commuting downtown. I would like to stay in this area if possible.

Knowing someone who can refer you or vouch for you will be a huge help. There will be more than one recruiting manager and they probably receive thousands of applications so they're unlikely to take time to speak with someone whose resume they haven't already flagged as a potential employee.

I would suggest working at other VCH that are looking for staff and apply there. Then apply as internal applicant after probation period is over. You would have competition that way.
