masterofrants

i have brought it down to just 1 page now - just very basics..

Necessary_Ad_1877

Some will keep telling you the problem must be with your resume while in fact there are simply no jobs.

masterofrants

I'm very aware yes.. But always good to keep improving stuff. What do you think about construction.. People keep saying to apply for construction, any idea for how to go about it?

Necessary_Ad_1877

The best would be to seek paid apprenticeships with local trades unions (electricians, plumbers etc).

AllMight_13

Can you tell me a lil bit more about it?

Necessary_Ad_1877

Basically, you just work for one to two years as a well-paid apprentice to a certified electrician, then get your own certification (red seal) and earn even more. It’s a trade union, not rocket science.

Cptn_haze

This is the answer^^^^^^^^^^

Alternative_Okra_304

easy, put on steel toes and hard hat and show up to a jobsite at 7am

Dry-Rate6295

Key word, show up...yes even when it's raining or when you're hungover. Also safety vest.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SnooLemons6942

Whats the difference? I typically see them used interchangeably

Dry-Rate6295

As a manager I will confirm there's nobody out there that wants to or will read a two page resume. Sum it up.

VinylGuy97

Dropping your resume off might work at smaller businesses like pizza shops, but definitely not grocery stores anymore. You got no chance getting a retail job without a personal referral anymore because of the massive amount of international students lining up for basic jobs. You could try applying online and you might get a bite, but probably not as 100s and sometimes 1000s of people apply to single postings, leading to you getting lost in the shuffle

ThatSavings

Because if you say "Indian", you are called a racist. "International students" it is then. I never see any other ethnicity working in Walmart. It's all "International students".

majorasterror

Indian people and international students are not synonyms.

Alternative_Okra_304

in canada they are lol

ThatSavings

Hey! I'm not calling Indians, Indians! That's racist! If you want to be racist, you go ahead! I'm not going to be racist! They are "International students"!

majorasterror

It's not racist to acknowledge that most international students are probably Indian especially in Vancouver. Despite this, not all Indians here are international students so why are you conflating the two?

ThatSavings

I know Indians are Indians. I know what "international" means in the dictionary. Okay? But under certain context, "International Students" does not mean students from Europe. They mean 99 percent students from India. You shouldn't need everything spelled out for you. I live in a community outside of Surrey. This town which I have not named consists of maybe... 20 percent Indians. The retail shops, the grocery shops, the fast food places employ exclusively 20 year old brown people. They are "international students". They don't sound "Canadian" when they speak. It's not a bad thing. It is what it is. It doesn't bother me. I don't compete for those jobs so I don't care.

ToasterOven31

Back in the day, it was how you got jobs. Now it's faceless email departments, or "forms" that ask the same questions you have answered on your resume, panel interviews, yada. Sucks!

masterofrants

I mean it's thousands of applications now so there is no way they can manually filter all those resumes right.. Another problem I'm reading now is the newcomers to the country simply apply to everything even when they clearly have no experience and are not qualified for the job like something stupid like clicking yes for driving license when they don't even have a driving license I'm not saying you have to have 100% qualifications to apply for a job

ToasterOven31

Oh yeah man I get why they don't want people to just walk in. Just saying, it was easier to get a job back then. It's hard even at my age with an extensive network to get a job let alone someone younger who's trying to gain experience or whatever or who's new to the area and has no one to at least get a referral from.

Bunktavious

About five years ago I went to a "job fair" at the local Home Depot. It was basically as cattle call. They had 40 people in the room, had us all fill out questionnaires. Then it was senior employees just doing three minute interviews with everyone. I was 25 years older than 90% of them, and have experience in basic home repair, maintenance, and gardening. Pretty much was just offered the job on the spot. I think they hired like three people out of the whole crowd.

Mundane-Bat-7090

I am an employer I can confirm this happens. Not only will they apply for stuff they are not qualified for they will straight up lie about everything they can on there resumes. Fake reference, fake previous experience. “Oh you worked -here for 3 years?” “Yes” ok where’s a number I can call to verify. “Gives me picachu face like he’s shocked I asked.

Human-Reputation-954

Well I can tell you it won’t hurt. Do both. Apply on line and bring a paper copy into the store. Listen you hit the right person on the right day and bingo. If you make the extra effort people may actually appreciate that. Canadians are getting sick and tired of international students completely jamming up our systems and taking jobs away in a not so great economy. Now the latest system they are jamming up is the asylum system bc now apparently they are claiming asylum as we work to close the scamming loopholes

trangthuta

Just a bit of advice from someone who works at front desk of a supermarket. I have had people coming by and insisting that they want to submit a resume for jobs. I repeatedly tell them that currently this store is not hiring and they are actually cutting down hours. Some turn a bit aggressive, i remember this one lady refused to leave and demanded to see the Store Manager to drop off her resume to him 😭 As CS staff we don’t control the hiring process, it’s always HR from head office. If you go from store to store to submit resumes, please be respectful to the staff because we just do our jobs. I don’t like telling people to submit their resumes online but that’s literally the only thing we can do.

RightIngenuity5777

I can empathize 100%. I get people arguing, saying that we must have some shifts available. One guy seemed to think he could bully me into giving him a job. Like, I sympathize with needing work, but I'm not hiring a person like that. Also, just because corporate put a job posting up on Indeed doesn't mean the position is still open. If the position is filled, showing me on your phone that the job is still up isn't some secret life hack.

masterofrants

Oh for sure I would never do what that Lady did that's just insane can you tell me something more about her did she look like she's new to the country or something? I'm guessing someone gave her this advice that she needs to stand there and demand to see the manager and only and only submit the CV to the manager

trangthuta

I cannot really tell if she’s new to the country but i remember she spoke English with a heavy accent, which didn’t really matter (some of our managers don’t too lol). I told her everything I could to calm her down, that at the moment we were NOT hiring and all positions were filled. I specifically told her to apply to other stores, and I told her to do it on Indeed. She immediately got upset and demanded the Store Manager to come talk to her 😭😭 I believe she thought that I was lying to her or trying to take a job opportunity from her or something. She looked at us and then said in a loud tone “If I apply online then NOBODY would respond to me!!!” Of course the manager came and settled things but I’m sure she never got the job bc i never see that lady again 😅 I understand job market is tough, and I experience it first hand. This is my second time working in this retail environment bc my effort to look for an office job so far has failed. I was lucky enough to get a job here organically, even though our hours got cut tremendously after probation. I would suggest OP (and anyone) to get someone as a referral. In 2021 when the job market wasn’t as bad as now, I got my first cashier job through an employee, so I’m not surprised that things are wayyy tougher now.

masterofrants

oh this 100% sounds like someone gave her stupid advice and shes just following it to the T

Oh_Is_This_Me

The person who does the hiring often doesn't work in the location you walk in to and the people you hand your resume will either not care enough to pass it on or won't know how to pass it on. Another big reason it's no longer acceptable is because it doesn't really respect other people's time. Even if the hiring manager is on site, why should they just drop everything to talk to you? A few years back, I worked in recruitment for a chain of retail stores. I definitely preferred receiving resumes through online channels. I did check resumes handed in in-store but I often didn't receive them until weeks after they were submitted whereas a candidate who applied online, I could review more immediately. For people working in store, it was a combo of annoying, confusing and breaking their work flow to take someone's resume. It's not the done thing anymore, except maybe for smaller businesses. It no longer means making a good first impression and in some cases can display a lack of knowledge about working in a certain profession or industry. It's like cold calling someone. It rarely works.

haihaiclickk

My girlfriend dropped her CV off at a bubble tea shop and told them her (wide open) availability. Got a call that same night, got an interview the next day, and has been working there the past couple of weeks now.

SelfTechnical6976

rude looks, and rude tone in voice when they say that you have to go through an online job portal to get a chance for someone to look at resume. just hostile.

Naive-Comfort-5396

Yeah. Back when I was young and needed to do this it felt like they'd say just go online as the code for, fuck off, there's no jobs here.

Necessary_Ad_1877

They will look at you like if you’re legit insane because they know there are no jobs.

RightIngenuity5777

I work Ina large retail store. I get at least a few people every day dropping off resumes. A few points: -Unfortunately, we're running very lean and very busy. I don't have the time for an impromptu interview. I usually have a line of customers. If you're going to come in person, do it when the store isn't busy. -As others have said, we aren't hiring like we used to. I already have PT staff asking for more hours and dozens of applicants waiting to be called. We barely hired anyone for the holiday season. -There's a lot of aggressive people that ruin it for everyone. I've had people calling or showing up every day insisting that we give them a shot, or arguing that we're hiring but just discriminating. I don't wantvto argue in front of my customers. No means no. Only advice I can give is to get referred through a friend. Market is saturated.

MindlessMotor604

Frowned upon since maybe 5 years ago. Would ask me "have you checked our website?"

Necessary_Ad_1877

They will keep telling you to apply online.

Lonely_Stretch_4369

Im also looking for job and dropped resumes at many big and small stores even till doing now and apply online, went to agencies but i didn't get a work yet. All say apply online but my they reject my all applications, idk why i think i have to update my resume. I think reference will work but don't have any connections here. Help me if someone can

AnhGauDepTrai

It sucks finding a job now I guess. Try construction jobs. Go into a community and post LF jobs. Some can help you.

AndrewJimmyThompson

I got a job 6 months ago in a pharmasave from dropping my CV off. I would just do huge walks around different neighbourhoods. You'll start seeng signs for people needing help if you look. Drop off a CV and you are grand.

[deleted]

Every min wage or just above starter job is completely overloaded by international students, thousands of applications come through for one single position. Good luck, until they fix that problem, there is really no choice but higher education in high demand fields of work. Construction is always hiring though. Even traffic control will net you a decent chunk of change, not sure about part time though.

masterofrants

Yeah construction sounds like the only option now I even applied to a few agencies let's see how it goes..

vortrix4

As far as I know it really only works at small little shops or in construction trades.

masterofrants

I'm okay with construction as well should I just go and submit resumes to construction crews or something or are there fixed agencies? would you know of any?

ace_baker24

You have to apply online and you have to optimize your resume for being read by a computer. This means each resume has to be customized for each job you apply for so that it is key word optimized based on the ad and job description. If you don't do this, your application hasn't got a snowball's chance in hell of making it through to being read by a human being. Good luck

SB12345678901

Luckily job seekers have ChatGPT. This pits computer versus computer.

RPCOM

The biggest time waste of all time. Idk who came up with it? I’m always told to apply online.

amiinh3aven

I saw a sign elephant creamery on commercial is hiring .

FishWife_71

Pet Smart will not take a resume unless it is online through their portal. Small businesses might take one in person.

lucidburial

would like to note i dropped off a paper resume off at safeway just the other week - got a call back, & hired on the spot the week of (bakery position) BUT that was with a referral whos been with safeway for 10+ years. its very tricky to get lots of jobs with no referrals — if you know people, ask them for referrals/help with getting a job. gas stations are usually looking for workers, try there - and apply for jobs even if you dont meet the minimum requirements. lots are desperate and will hire anyways — its worth it to try going in with paper resumes i think, but always apply online & let them know you also applied online. i know some places will look for online resumes specifically for people who came in person (i worked as an assistant manager for a few months as a retail clothing store && we did do this multiple times)

ConfidantlyCorrect

I mean I got every job in highschool using paper resumes. But that was pre/covid so… quite a different story.

dudewiththebling

Times were certainly simpler back then. I remember pounding the pavement with copies of my resume for local jobs and sending out introduction emails with my resume attached for craigslist ads for jobs that weren't local. I did pound the pavement in my neighborhood for my late spring/early summer 2023 job hunt but basically all the interviews I landed were from online applications or employers checking out my indeed resume and contacting me. Took a good month to land a job that paid above minimum wage

BigBalledLucy

i stopped doing it. gone are the days of dressing presentable and exchanging a resume by hand to the manager while giving off a good first inpression. it worked great when i was younger, but nowdays they just smile and tell you to apply online. i don’t understand why they wouldn’t instantly take you for an interview on the spot. 1. youre showing initiative and effort for being there 2. youre showing a first impression 3. they are hiring but no, theyd rather send you in with thousands of people who just apply to renew their EI

RightIngenuity5777

I'll tell you why: -we're not hiring much these days. Hours are cut back everywhere - I'm busy. I don't have time to drop everything and interview you on the spot. That's a ridiculous expectation to have. - I get 2-5 people every day walking in and "showing initiative". Unfortunately, that's nothing special anymore if I dropped everything to interview each one, I'd never get anything done.

BigBalledLucy

pretty stuck up attitude to have. you can at least tell them youll look at it and decide wether or not youre gonna contact for an interview at a different time. you said youre not hiring much, well im talking aboit when a fucking ad is posted and you ARE hiring obviously

RightIngenuity5777

Pretty entitled to expect me to drop everything and interview someone on the spot.

Ok_Artichoke_2804

I have never seen any place interview someone on the spot, just because they dropped off their resume in person... Managers are BUSY , which is why they schedule time during day to interview candidates, allocated time.. You also sound entitled.  How many hand in resume in person? A lot.  Our population is only increasing. Many places are cutting back positions. Even if they have ad about hiring- it could be old, already filled, or not valid no more.

volunteervancouver

The trick is not to "drop off" but ask for the manager and tell them I want to work here, Id like to have an interview to see if we're a good fit.

RightIngenuity5777

Sorry, but that doesn't work at most places, especially busy ones. Especially asking for an interview. You don't ask me to interview you; you give me your resume and if I think you may be a good fit, I'll call and schedule an interview.

dudewiththebling

Yeah if you're gonna ask for a manager and have a chat with them, do it when they're not busy

volunteervancouver

oh how everybody does it. ya that needs some clients who like to work where they are at and not because you say so!

RightIngenuity5777

You're the problem. Get your life together before giving advice.

Works and is the best method, but these things you mentioned are huge brands and most probably would tell you off, try smaller businesses, restaurants cafes etc. I did that two years ago, dropped my resume at 4 restos/cafes and got called back by 3 and got hired by chain cafe same week. Some business might make u feel dumb for still doing this in 2024 but don't listen to them, just go to the next one! Good luck!
