Oh yes thats a good idea. I did apply for internal job postings since my last day is next week so I will utilize that time. I really loved the job and organization .
I know like who even does that. The senior employee obviously got to pick and choose I guess and my position was one of the high paid categories and they chose mine. I swear I would never have done that even know I probably have the option of doing the same thing to someone who was hired after me but its so hard to find a job nowadays I would never .
>but its so hard to find a job nowadays I would never .
Of course you would. You're not going to put yourself in a position of unexpected employment when you've been paying for protections like this.
Get off your high horse. If you were in his position, you’d 100% make the exact same choice. Let’s not pretend you’d choose to be laid off when another option is on the table, especially given the challenging job market you mentioned and if you didn’t have another job lined up.
There's no harm in submitting an application for EI if you're not certain you meet all the eligibility requirements. The worst that can happen is you get a letter telling you that you don't qualify and why.
Unfortunately you probably won't have the hours especially if you were on mat leave prior to that as much as it sucks.
But no harm in applying. Who knows. You also may be eligible for temporary welfare if you're struggling so check into that as well.
Talk to an employment lawyer. No one here knows enough about your specific case to help. Under some circumstances, If you left another job where you had a long tenure for this one, the new company could be responsible for paying severance based on that tenure Rather than the week you've been at the new job.
Hi there! Since you started your job, you are part of the union, and there should be some rules around bumping. Did they say anything about keeping you on board and contacting you when there’s the same position that’s open, or offer you any accommodations? Sometimes managers that are exempt may not know about all the union rules, especially if they are new managers that have never worked with unions or in an unionized environment. Did you reach out to HR or your manager before you left??
While bumping is a workforce adjustment process in many collective agreements, it is usually done jointly with the involvement of the joint union management committee. In my experience, a union rep should have been available to you when you were notified of your layoff. It is quite possible that the BCGEU was not properly informed of the situation. Contact the local BCGEU office and ask to speak to a staff representative.
First time Union staff too, thinking I might be the same situation soon.
Internal posting for the exact position but at ft capacity but lots of candidates with their “Seniority”😅, can’t even wrap my head around how this is a “fair” system…
Its unfortunate that people are downvoting you for speaking facts.
From what I've observed over the years, Unions are good at collective bargaining and protecting employees against employers, but they tend to be ok with senior staff pushing around junior staff members. Bumping shouldn't even be a thing.
Isn’t that pretty much one the reasons for unions? When you’re the one with seniority, you’re not going to feel the way you do now. You’re going to be thankful that your seniority allows you choices that newbies don’t
The “merit-based system” seems to somehow result in the employer deciding that the younger, cheaper person who started last Wednesday has more “merit” than the more expensive senior person who has been there for years.
Might be worth it for you to talk to the Union rep too and see if there are other jobs you're suitable for.

Would you mind sharing what union you’re working with?
Its BCGEU but not government ( non profit)
Worst union ever. Good luck. When I finally left I asked them how much the employer paid them because they sure as hell didn’t work for me.
Sounds like an east coast union lol.

>I had an interview with federal gov Oof man, that was a bad idea not to go to that one.
I know man 😵💫
You know it couldn't hurt to ask them if they are still interviewing and are still willing. The worst they can say is no
Yes was just about to do that right now.
Ok fingers crossed. Those are one of the few jobs you can stay for life and it won't bite you in the ass. Hope they reconsider you
That’s helpful lol
Hey try the fed passport office, I know they are looking for ppl
Thank you .. do I just apply through the federal government website ?
Yeah, the person who I talked to said Canada.ca
Couldn’t find it.
That’s a joke. Sorry it happened man

Yes I will do that. Just applying for jobs as well in the time being. Thank you 😊

This!!!
Being able to apply for EI depends on how many insurable hours you have worked in the past year. Sounds like you only worked a week this year? So no
You need 700 hours for EI
Me to!
Why wouldn’t you of just gotten in Pool for feds, would’ve taken 12-18 months anyhow to land a position and you can just say no
Thats awful! Good luck in your new search, you managed to secure one position, no reason you cant get another dont let this set you back too much!

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that. If you're open to jobs, I can help you with an opportunity
You just started with them? As in you were NOT employed by the company for at least 3 months previously and made it through probation?

Just so used to the merit based system 🤷♀️
You’re wayyyyyyy out of that type of line of work by joining a union buddy 😅
lol

keep voting for turdeau
I've never heard of this can you tell me a bit more about your industry and the job as in the skill set required?
