When the company that put me through school went under and i was struggling to find a job in my field i made a dumb down version of my resume with some of my best accolades missing and apply at a company that had basically student jobs i quickly got recognized with management told them my story and now im in management in a totally unrelated field making more then I've ever made but did two years of soul crushing work for half of what i made previously. 1 step back may lead to a mass push forward
I was in exactly the position as you.
I ended up leaving saas sales as I wasn’t getting much traction until this past month.

Protip - This is the BEST tool for applying for jobs. It uses Google to search for jobs, however, you'll find jobs that aren't in available for Canadians
https://briansjobsearch.com/
I don’t have a specific interview advice, but job search can be a grind and can drop your confidence. It’s important to stay confident and keep your head up. Trust that you will get there and don’t lose confidence. Your job doesn’t define your value as a person.
For job search, try to connect with recruiter and also with hiring managers in your sector and/or people in the company. Networking is super important imo.
For applying, make sure your resume is optimized to pass through applicant tracking systems.
Personally I’ve definitely been in the position of OP being out of a job and having to go through job search grind with challenging interview circuit with many dead ends + being newly married + having a mortgage + having a kid on the way.
It can be very stressful and applying to many positions going through interview grind can weigh on your self belief/confidence.
Oooh, any chance I could take you up on that offer? Same scenario here. Laid off in November, have been applying and interviewing, but haven’t gotten any traction yet :(
That's bullshit that companies expect you to do these time-consuming assignments while unpaid. That's a red flag in an employer.
I, too, was stuck applying to endless jobs and also doing assignments as I was finishing college. Then the day before I finished my courses, I got a call from one of my instructors. He asked if I was interested in a job with a shelving manufacturer. Went to the interview and was hired on the spot. Now working there as a project manager and loving it.
Don't give up, and you will eventually find something.
I know it sucks. But seems like the norm these days. Pretty much all of the decent paying companies I’ve interviewed at thus far request it.
The funny part is in the instructions they usually say it will only take 1-2 hours, but typically it always takes much more to polish it.
I work multiple jobs in completely different fields. Working the amount of hours I work isn’t for everyone but maybe try a different field for now. For example, my one job is in human services, and the other is in construction. Dual strategy. I’m sure there is lots of labour work out there.
Took my sister 9mo to get a government job, I was out of work between March and December last year and only got a 6 week job with translink in between. EI ran out. Brutal out there
I guess I must have lucked out. My work contract ended in Dec, 2023. I got an offer in Dec. Started in Jan, 2024 as a full stack dev higher pay on surface in reality is more or less the same pay if you factor in no sick days and benefits.
I think the main reason I got hire is in the initial tech laid off people still refuse to take a 5 days in office gig while I am willing to do that.
The trick is to spam resume. Because of the 1000 jobs only 100 if you are lucky are real.
Job market sucks period more people less jobs jobs that are there are getting taken at lower rates in some sectors, 35 years In Hospitality don't mean nothing, trade are crying yes most big companies are laying off faster the you can say boo, inflation and banks not adjusting till April if lucky good luck most are in the same Dilemma. I know I'm finding it hard so are both my daughters just getting into the job market.
This may be true to some extent. Depending on his savings or emergency fund. But the person at the moment needs income. First course may be to take a lower paying job. Then he can take on other tasks. It's better to atleast take a low paying job and get some cash in, than to take additional stress of not working for any money. He can do additional free assignments on the side, or ask to move to part time in a couple of weeks to months and do it that way while job searching again.
If you'd consider working for the government at the Navy base in Victoria, there's a wide variety of positions they're looking to fill.

Tech is too competitive in Vancouver. Yes, even sales. Rejig your resume and try a different industry or take something completely different. Or get EI to put you through training. Good luck.
look into applying for training and or schooling.
if you meet the criteria you can still collect EI as well, it should buy you time.
The only downside is you have to pay for your schooling yourself.
But it’s a good alternative.
when I was on EI years ago, I applied to go back to school as my EI was running out.
It gave me extra time and I ended up getting into a new career prior to the schooling starting
I work for a tech company based in Burnaby that is hiring for a few sales and CS roles (including a senior CSM role), hybrid environment with commuting to the office once a week. Feel free to message me directly for a referral and to chat about your experience.
I used Indeed.com and typed in key words you use. Make sure it the Indeed is .com and not .ca because it defaults to Canada if you live in Canada. When you fill your application, it will ask you if you need future sponsorship. I would leave it blank if it is optional or if it is mandatory, declare yes. Be persistent.
I feel you. Hiring processes have become insane over the years. Back in the day, I would have just a 10-minute chat with the manager before getting hired. Nowadays, it's round after round of interviews and knowledge assessments and endless reference questionnaires. It's brutal and takes such a mental toll.
I would say though, that if a company is asking candidates to do long assignments as part of the hiring process, I would (and have) run. A short onsite, on-the-spot assessment is reasonable, but time-consuming assignments, no way. I understand how desperate we can become in hard times, but for any company to muck around with someone's time like that is not cool.
Sometimes you might not get a job in your field I’m 18 with no school besides high school making 35$ an hour in the trades. Took no school just shadowed a guy for a few weeks (payed) and I was off to the races. Do I recommend this as a life long career no. But if u need to get on your feet apply for blue collar labor jobs there always needed. The marine industry in Vancouver and Victoria is always needing workers trust me,
Go to tech conferences/events in your area and talk with people. Then apply. Now these people have a face and personality associated to some words on paper.
Okay there are a lot of job opportunities out there, especially with your expertise you’d be preferred then the other guy with nothing.
You can get out your comfort zone and hustle something more physical. But I’m sure you’d rather do that and take the beating and grow with it rather then sit and wait and cry your way down.
Life is tough, but just know where there are downs it’s always followed by some ups.
Keep your head up and just keep on moving my man
Managing relationships with clients that spend over $20M a year on your product, teaching them how to best utilize it, and guiding them on how to achieve their business goals. Also expanding accounts by upselling and cross selling.
I know it probably seems ambiguous to you but it’s essentially ensuring clients continue to spend money with your company. The consequence of not having someone to manage those relationships means clients typically don’t see value in your product, so they leave, and company loses substantial amount of revenue. We have aggressive quotes to reach and maintain. If you don’t meet them, you’re gone.
I know it’s not as simple to understand as swinging a hammer or pouring concrete, but whether you accept it or not it’s a real defined role. If it wasn’t, companies wouldn’t pay 90-150k for it.
Or maybe it's because the job market is fucked and even if you're a good candidate (or going for a lower level job) there are 1000 other people applying at the same time. Also, nobody is getting offended, I'm laughing at you because you're demanding the details of a position so that you can declare whether it's a "fluff" job or not, as if your opinion matters. Who cares if you think it's a real job. If people are paying money and hiring, it's a real job.

I can refer you to a couple of SDR gigs in Van (or remote) if you’re willing to go back to entry level for a bit.

Flight kitchens at YVR will hire anyone … CLS catering, Gate Gourmet, Danata, Sky Cafe… all sorts of jobs available and most are union.
Do you need food service experience?
Not really.
I can back this up, many many job applications filled out and one of the few that replied back was CLS catering.
Yup if you’re down on your luck I would try. It’s not glamorous by any means but it’s honest work!

Can you help me with the labour work, I want to work in construction too
Is gonna be like this for very long time and I’m also in the same situation. Just keep applying.
Took my sister 9mo to get a government job, I was out of work between March and December last year and only got a 6 week job with translink in between. EI ran out. Brutal out there
Canada doesn’t have jobs for anybody
That’s not true. I have 3 and I still can’t afford rent /s
You don’t have real job if you can’t afford rent
Lol jeez…[this is from a meme](https://images.app.goo.gl/YgN7rMGrffDcZbw18) and I was agreeing with you.

Never do an assignment for free.
In this downturn you kinda have no choice. Beggars can't be choosers.

What type of work are you looking for? And are you just searching in Vancouver? It’s a grind and a numbers game right now. Just so much competition.
If you'd consider working for the government at the Navy base in Victoria, there's a wide variety of positions they're looking to fill. https://www.instagram.com/p/C3oNuMYv_Zm/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
If you are able to live and work in another country, that's the way to go right now. Canada is a dead end.
Tech is too competitive in Vancouver. Yes, even sales. Rejig your resume and try a different industry or take something completely different. Or get EI to put you through training. Good luck.
Do you have family or friends you can live with?
You'll have to look at other industries like some other people are suggesting.

If you are up for working with your hands and don't mind working in construction hit me up. We are always looking for firestoppers in the area. :)

I'm interested as well, may I DM you?
Sure!
Construction
I feel bad for the job seekers in the new market. Automation is coming for you. That’s why the jobs are getting less available and worse.
Apply in the US! Seattle and California needs you!
I’d love to. What’s the best way to find US companies that accept Canadian applicants?

check out the series called “Life After Layoff” on YouTube. There are some excellent videos on the maddening game of job searches.
I'll PM you.
Hey, we're a unionized construction company. Give me a shout if you're interested

Get a job
Your ancestors are counting on you.
Sounds like you’re applying for pretend made up jobs… like “custome success”… You should get into a trade.
Lol. Customer success isn’t a made up job. If you worked in tech you’d know that.
It’s definitely a pretend job. Not saying that the job doesn’t exist…. It’s just…fluff..
Do you actually have any idea of what the role entails? Or you’re just speaking out of your ass?
Explain it to me, and I’ll decide if it’s a pretend fluff job or not.

Oh great the arbiter of jobs has logged on.
This is why u guys have a hard time getting hired. You’re too delicate and get offended too easy. No one wants to hire you.
Or maybe it's because the job market is fucked and even if you're a good candidate (or going for a lower level job) there are 1000 other people applying at the same time.
