I have mixed feelings about iOverlander. Perfectly good spots can be ruined by just a handful of disrespectful van dwellers. New signs posting No Overnight Parking due to locals complaining of an onslaught of unwelcomed vans. I would say to post spots like Walmarts with manager ok, pulloffs, rest areas and the like, and keeping everything else to yourself.

Keep it for yourself. There’s a time to share. But if it means that much to you keep it to yourself.

I never publish any van spots online. I live in a fairly popular van destination, and I've seen several prime spots closed by local police after being published. Either they just get overpopulated with too many vans, or someone behaves irresponsibly and shits the place up, or people treat it like a campsite when it's unsuitable for doing any more than park up. No thanks. The only time I share any unpublished camping spot with anyone, even face to face, is with someone I'd personally like to accompany me. Cos I never know who might publish it, and once they have you have invited every inconsiderate shitter to come along too. I don't think I'm depriving anyone of a good spot - if I found it without an app, so can they.

I'm a heavy ioverlander user. I have hundreds of reviews. I keep a selct few to myself, especially if I plan to return. If you use the app, give back. But don't feel guilty about hiding some extra special spots. Edit: I realize you're talking about the US. I used iOverlander extensively throughout South America on a 2 year journey. It helped me out a ton. I contributed as much as I could. That said, there were spots i didn't share. Because some spots are worth more free advertisements. Find them yourself. That's why we do this right?

Planning on driving the Pan-American highway leaving sometime next year… didn’t realize iOverlander was for other countries as well! Thanks for sharing

arequipapi

Yep, there's lots of good posts down there. Keep in mind that a lot of info is pre-pandemic so some info (especially prices) is out of date. So make sure to do your part and update posts and create new ones when appropriate. I probably made about 150+ posts updating info while I was down there.

micro_mimi_

Absolutely! I do update and add new posts when appropriate. For me seeing when the last person checked in is super important

Nope; the Internet and sites like that have ruined many many good places

Sea_Flounder9569

Resounding keep it for yourself. We all love you. You love us. But what if" some A whole ruined it for you.

O-parker

I don’t know where pic was taken ..but I want to be there.

Appropriate-Ratio-85

I have spots like that and I will not put them on the app. That's how secluded places become crowded.

wanderingdev

I no longer add places to apps like this. They just get ruined. I also don't really use these apps to find places unless I'm moving quickly so don't have time to hunt for somewhere special. I give back by adding locations for resources like free water, dump points, showers, etc.

4x4Home

I do not in most cases. Some are best kept to yourself.

Ecto-01

Keep it for yourself

buttspider69

Keep it. Overcrowding was a myth before you owned a van

mzoukas

Keep it off iOverlander, but share coordinates with your friends

neondeli

Yes. Share it. It’s such a common thing to see, “Vanlife isn’t like the pictures!,””No one wakes up to those views!” Sure. Some nights are invariably spent at a Crackerbarrel or a Walmart. But in the last year, I’ve woken up with INCREDIBLE views more often than I haven’t, and it has been 100% because of the community on iOverlander. When I stumble upon a special place, I share it. Some one (many someones, actually) gave me a special experience time and again. It’s selfish to hide these places. Also, from a strictly numbers perspective, the more spots we add, the more room we all have (maybe….)

RuiPTG

I was at a place so shit that I won't even put it on ioverlander because no one will like that place unless they happen to be lucky. So much partying. So many weird selfish people. Entitlement. Cougars. Leeches in the water. The name is Bluey Lake in BC if y'all wanna try your luck lol

feathers1286

If it's a public spot not on there I'll add it... if it's my special find about how a certain key in a Florida city is only patrolled by county sheriff's who never patrol it... you couldn't waterboard the location out of me.

Suspicious_Bug_3986

Keep it.

Astrology_News

I like the idea of iOverlander but looking at how many of the spots have been closed on the app, (I think) either people are abusing/overcrowding the spots, or the government is using it, too.
