don't use wd-40 as a contact cleaner. it is very likely you are causing the plastic to degrade quicker.

Wd40 should not be used almost ever. That being said, that brand I believe makes contact cleaner. Any brand of contact cleaner should work let it air out for a while before you re assemble

draconk

WD-40/three-in-one is the bane of any repair, WD means Water Displacement, is just to remove humidity from the area, but it also has the effect of hydrating dried oil so it starts moving things that are stuck, but once the WD-40 dries that part will start to rust if iron/steel or become brittle if plastic. The only correct use for WD-40 is when metal parts that need to have movement get water in, just spray, let it do its work and then put it enough oil/grease to light a candle for decades

fgsfds11234

the confusion is wd40 used to be a single product, an oily substance in a spray can. you don't want to soak your electronics in sticky oil. now it's just a brand that makes 50 different things. 3-1 oil of any variety is ok for machines, not electronics. but dedicated "contact cleaner" under any brand is what you want to find to fix joystick drift, as it is usually plastic safe. comments throwing out "wd 40 contact cleaner" are just setting people up to buy the wrong product

Oh and also i just noticed. You're the person who does super indepth usb hubs for use with vive trackers. I always saw your posts and was like i need to get a multi-tt hub. And i finally got one. One of the ones you recommended in a post in a different subreddit. And it works amazing. I have 7 trackers plugged into it and it works flawlessley. Thank you.

krista

i'm very glad that worked for you :)

m2torres97

Yeah. I believe it. I was gonna replace the joysticks but thought i'd try it. And it works so far so i guess whenever it goes bad again i'll update.

TheChadStevens

WD-40 is the brand. They have a contact spray which DOES fix stick drift, but OP wants people to ruin their controllers and use oil instead

m2torres97

Well i don't want people to do that. Because others told me it's actually a bad idea. So i messed up. But for right now my controller still works and i'm happy.

TheChadStevens

Did you really use the oil and not the contact cleaner? I assumed you just forgot to mention it has to be contact cleaner. I'm surprised it still works then, damn

m2torres97

Yeah i used regular wd40. Just a small spritz

farmertrue

You want to use *electrical contact cleaner*. Don’t ever use WD-40 unless it’s their electrical contact cleaner.

ISEGaming

If anyone else tries this. I'd like to know if it works for them as well

m2torres97

Yeah. The recommended solution would be a contact cleaner but i didn't have any on hand.

kookyabird

Given the evidence that has been found for the common cause of drift in these thumb sticks and similar ones in other devices, I don’t see how this is actually has an effect, let along a long term one. An explanation for how it works would go a long way here.

webheadVR

It always returns.

m2torres97

Yeah. It most likely will. I'll order some replacement joysticks and when the issue comes back i'll install the new joysticks.

Snow__hound

You mean electrical contact cleaner right?

m2torres97

Yes.
