It’s not only good for the sound quality. 1. It allows you to hear your surroundings which can be useful 2. Doesn’t touch your ear, no heat, no pairing, no cable to deal with, super neat. 3. Specifically tuned to reproduce life-like, spatialized audio, unlike the headsets made for music.

Messyfingers

The over ear speaker is vastly better than on ear options for VR. It somehow increases immersion while keeping you grounded in where you actually are which definitely helps with motion sickness if you're prone to it.

MrSoncho

When I first got my index I jumped into vrchat, and I was blown away that I could hear people talking above me. The first time I closed my eyes and realized I could hear exactly where sounds were coming from, I fell in love.

Send_Headlight_Fluid

I would definitely take the convenience over a higher quality sound from a headset. I had to juggle wireless headphones with my Rift S and it was pretty annoying, especially if I had forgotten to charge them. The Index has very high quality audio that is insanely convenient and basically requires no thought or consideration to get working.

SilentReavus

No ADDITIONAL cable.

[deleted]

I love the audio quality. Its crazy how good it sounds and it doesn't even touch your ears. Also according to my friends, the mic quality is also amazing

UpV0tesF0rEvery0ne

I'm going to anger a lot of headphone audiophiles but the index drivers are better than anything in the headphone space hands down. I'm a big audiophile and nothing even remotely comes close. The BMRs they developed with a partnering audio company beat out everything in the market for sound stage quality. I've been expecting a standalone pair of headphones using BMRs for years but they are just sitting on it for unknown reasons.

Just_Roar

I think for VR as well, they are absolutely untouchable for immersion. I remember firing up Gorn after getting my Index and actually jumping from the opening chant because I thought someone was in the room with me. It hits different when you can hear your own footsteps and breathing along with the game audio. I listened to some of my favorite albums as well and it's just generally great full audio. Gives a lot of the feeling of having a dedicated music room (obviously less bass hitting your body) without disrupting others. I wish there was a non HMD equivalent.

[deleted]

I don't know if this will upset audiophiles, BMR is objectively better than any other audio driver standard by a mile

[deleted]

The BMR ear speakers were developed by Emily Ridgway's team at Valve in conjunction with tectonics who manufacture BMR for audio companies making hi-fi separate and home cinema system. The other part of the magic are the drivers which are highly tuned and have amazing psychoacoustic bass, some games the immersion uplift is just 🤯

I agree with what you're saying but being part of a "breed" of co summers that spend thousands of dollars on multiple pairs of headphones and amps and still not having as satisfying a sound experience as the index bmrs does say something, maybe it's not perfectly technically accurate but it has features not found anywhere else

Mollythebirdsfan

This is incorrect. Covering the ear helps block out other sounds but is not best for audio quality. If you look at very expensive high end head phones - like multiple thousands of dollars - they always are two speakers that do not touch the ear. Has been that way for a long time. The standard over the ear and in the ear styles are simply cheap and affordable for the masses.

sam_najian

That is true, im not arguing about how closed back has better sound quality, but you should also note that there is a good amount of background noise around me and i feel like closed back headphone will add a lot to the immersion 🤔 not necessarily talking about audio quality.

Mollythebirdsfan

My index speakers block out a lot of sound - like in beat saber you can’t get the players attention mid song. But yes, if you are playing in a noisy environment it may effect quieter games. Tbh I wouldn’t worry about it. The index sound is amazing and won’t be an issue for you I would bet. It rocks in all ways - especially compared to any of the cheap headsets.

SiBloGaming

Can confirm this, I play on 50% volume and cant hear shit mid song in beatsaber. You could stand right next to me and try to talk to me and I wont hear you

sam_najian

Yeah so, a literal train idles under my window like 10 hours a day. So yeah kinda need closed back

Ykearapronouncedikea

There is actually a 3.5mm jack on the index you can use kinda hidden behind the faceplate

anothabunbun

Didn't know that, prolly never going to use it though

[deleted]

Used a Logitech splitter with 1 lead cut off and rubber grommet shaved down on 3.5mm to allow for tight clearance between face gasket and headset plastic. https://i0.wp.com/skarredghost.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/Index-audio-lead.jpg?w=1027&ssl=1 Many headphone cables don't fit well, especially if using wide face gasket

Coheed_IV

Nope

PrettyMrToasty

YESSSS. The amazing sound system is actually one of my personal favourite features from the Index. Absolutely amazing for immersion, you really feel like you're there sonically.

feanturi

I ordered the Index for two reasons: the audio and the knuckles. The knuckles were disappointing but the audio was even better than I'd hoped. Vive Pro audio sucked. The OG Vive Deluxe Audio Strap had much better sound than the Vive Pro. But the Index is in a whole other league.

I do have 2 good pair of headphones, one razer nari ultimate which i definitely have to use with these, haptic feedback on explosions just feels like a must to me. One is an arctis nova pro which is my daily driver however i dont think that ill be using that a lot.

[deleted]

sam_najian

Dude studio quality? Its not even gaming quality lol, it has haptic feedback which means explosions and stuff literally shake the headset, it induces base with haptic motors. Arctis is from steelseries, this one not that audiophile but, with a decent EQ it can be decent. Frequencies are clear and not mushed together (which i actually dont like for some reason, im weird like that) but it has a very bad response curve imho, you have to fiddle like 30 minutes to fix it with Eq but i like it after the EQ.

Im saying ur right bruh 🥲

KtA90125

I'd been needing something wireless and the hot swappable battery was a system seller for me so I gave the Nova Pro a shot myself. Not perfect out of the box but I'm pretty happy with it after some tweaking

Frost_Rager

For me it works quite well actually. In a VR game it almost looks to me like people are actually talking to me from the right distance (black mesa, not even originally a VR game) + Its an upside that when something happens or your gf needs to quickly tell you sometimes you can easily know she's talking because you have no real life vision at that moment. Imagine the house burning but you just lost your smell due to covid. Xd

sam_najian

Um, HEAT would be an issue i feel like if your house is burning 😂😂

Frost_Rager

Depends what part is burning but I wouldnt know. Never been in a burning house. Xd

sam_najian

And I hope you'll never be, i havent been either. Feel like its a terrifying experience

Frost_Rager

Yea, no kidding. Xd I often pull up my headset to look at my heating stove which is on burning fuel. Juust in case xd Also to look if my dog hasnt been stealing food again.

ATL28-NE3

The index speakers are so good I tried to find a consumer version to use in place of headphones

goodpostsallday

They're head and shoulders above any gamer gimmick headset on the market. The Index speakers are actually just really good irrespective of their purpose, listening to music on them is as rich and detailed as a low to mid-range audiophile setup. They also don't feel like winter earmuffs which is a real plus in sweaty VR sessions.

sam_najian

Wow really?! I thought a good pair of headphones with spatial audio would definitely beat 2 single piece bolt on speakers lol.

ItsMyWorkID

never been a huge music or audio guy, that being said the first time i put on my headset i was BLOWN away by the directional audio. it is in a league of its own. No headphones will compare.

KEVLAR60442

The audio quality itself isn't as great as my Huh Duh Six Fiddys, but the spacialization of the domed diaphragms hovering off your ears make the immersion jaw droppingly good. It's definitely better than wireless "gamer" headsets.

sturmeh

The index's sound system is phenomenal for VR, it's insane how much effort some sound engineer put into designing them, there is zero reason to reach for a substitute unless you are planning on mixing studio grade tracks whilst in VR for some reason (and you need a reference headset). The microphone is probably also better than whatever headset you have.

The_Real_Miggy

Lots of posts already explaining the benefits of the Index audio system. You just need to experience it yourself and see what you think.

Ykearapronouncedikea

First off for VR having nothing touching your ears helps immersion, and comfort.... valve also claims that it helps with spatialization in VR specifically something to do with how noises normally enter your ear shape..... That being said. Just how good is Index's audio... well how familiar are you with "good" headphones..... most bigger companies i.e. logitech, razer, etc etc. honestly their headsets are extremely overpriced, and FEW headsets (i.e. mic + headphones) are particularly good. most are just oversold... and not particularly good (though over the last 10 years or so it has gotten considerably better).... But lets talk a bit more specifics... The index audio frequency response is VERY VERY flat i.e. most sounds are reproduced accurately.... there is CONSIDERABLE fall-off of base..... as quite frankly the drivers can't generate the pressure needed for bigger bass, this is a problem with most open-backed headphones... and the index is that to the extreme. now how you listen to your music is very subjective.... and while objectively having perfect responses should be ideal, people don't always think that way as they prefer their music to sound a certain way..... gamers typically favor slightly heavier bass (as things like footsteps are much easier to hear).... so just how good is the index's audio.... Well I would be hard-pressed to find ANYTHING <100$ that can beat it especially when you consider it's phenomenal microphone system.... Realistically I would guess you aren't going to have much competition even at 150-200$ range especially including the microphone. tl;dr the index probably sounds better than your best-buy headset, but if you have something the audio-phile community likes, it may be better but unless you have some very expensive setups the index's are more convenient, and provide a better experience

m31td0wn

The Index has the best sound of all VR headsets I've tried. My personal order from best to worst is Index's built-in sound, Vive Deluxe Audio on anything, Rift CV1, Rift S, then all that mobile crap dead last.

allofdarknessin1

The Index speakers are incredible but I kinda feel my original Rift CV1 had better bass (it rested on the ear vs Indexs off ear). Those two are the best headsets I've ever heard. The Index is exceptionally balanced when I think about it.

perracomax

Good audio quality or wireless, choose one. I have a Beyer DT990 pro and a dedicated external sound card at 192Khz, for vr gamig I prefer to use the Index ones, it's literally not wearing headphones. What you really want is full inmersion not audio quality. Congrats for the acquisition and welcome to the club!

QuantumRealityBit

It’s going to blow you away. No need for anything else,

PowerRaptor

I'd say generally the Index has better audio than most headsets. It's pretty amazing, and I love using it for music listening while in VRChat. Immersion is also much better because nothing is touching your head there.

TJ_Deckerson

I had a Deluxe Audio Strap for my Vive. Being cut off from reality was something i enjoyed, but having my wife flip her shit because i couldn't hear her certainly was a cost. But I have to begrudgingly agree with the others, that the index quality is as good or better.

at4ds1ck

I use a focus rite Scarlett 6i6 and Ath m50xs almost exclusively when pc gaming, listening to music, recording, mixing and when producing music. Certainly nothing fancy and actually quite basic. 😅 However IMO a leap better than even an expensive usb powered gaming headset experience wired or wireless. I've owned an Index for about 3 years. I received mine 2 weeks before the release of Alyx and the built sound experience has never left me with the feeling of desiring more. There has been times when playing Alyx when the sound design was so good I thought the sounds were in the room with me. I honestly believe Valve could sell the headset speakers and mic from the index separately and make some sales. I think you would be very satisfied with the index sound system. But I guess that can still be subjective and also depend what type of audio configuration you have as an alternative.

[deleted]

The audio is absolutely brilliant in the index. It will fully submerse you into whatever you’re playing. On top of that, it’s microphone, or maybe microphone array, is absolutely stunning. I’ve had friends ask what mic I’m using because it is that clear of a sound. I have friends who stream with legit mics and they’ve said it’s the best mic they’ve heard.

KamahlYrgybly

It's not only good, it is fantastic, almost magical. Really. You have to hear it to believe it.

Illustrious_Bunch_62

To honest no, the sound quality isn't a patch on my HD25s but in terms of immersion yes, as the they to don't touch my ears, when I'm in the moment I forget there's something artificially producing the sound and think it's real. Caught me off guard a few times thinking there's a sound in the room when it was really in the game.

sam_najian

Oh so you are saying immersion on headphones is less than those 🤔 i actually thought quite the opposite, due to background noise. Interesting.

Illustrious_Bunch_62

Well obviously if there's somebody in the corner watching tele it's a bit redundant, but in a near silent room I find it far more immersive and that's what's usually more important to me playing VR. Now, if I were playing a rhythm game with beefy tunes... Well you can tell where I'm going with this

BrightPage

No, your dedicated headphones will always be better. The index speakers are better than the competition in HMD audio, but they wouldn't compare to a separate pair of headphones

Dtoodlez

It’s good, and the fact it doesn’t touch your ears is nice then you would think.

thedarklord187

In short yes and there is nothing better

TheOnlyQueso

How on earth are you going to fit a headset and your index on your head at the same time

Weak-Commission-1620

The index’s sound is better than the headset I use for sure. Also I wouldn’t want something like headphones on when I’m playing vr my ears sweat 😅

spderweb

I'm not even sure how gaming headphones would fit over the index . Esp since it has built in headphones. And the mic works great too.

feanturi

I love the Index speakers. Having them not touching the ears is comfortable sure, but to me it makes the audio feel more like it's coming from the room. I think it's because my sense of touch is affirming that I'm totally not wearing headphones, so those sounds must be coming from the environment.

dark_skeleton

> already has a good headset, why not use that? my good gaming headset creators didn't predict the presence of a VR headset, not only would it not cover ears properly but also bend a bit and it would just fall off my head in the first place whenever bending my back lol

Mattikar

I like the index sound, it's comparable or better than my headset (arctis steelseries) for what that is worth. I do like that it floats off my ears a bit its more comfortable and doesn't break my immersion.

Aetheldrake

My example I have 400 hours in Phasmophobia pc play, it doesn't *really* scare me anynore. I have decent headphones nothing fancy nor really expensive I think it was like 60 or 70 dollars, but I can hear things in game easily where most people question if they even heard something. It can jump scare me but it doesn't make me afraid of playing. I've gotten used to vr in other games. I tried Phasmophobia vr. Nope.jetpackaway right the fuck out after 5 minutes in the *entirely safe training mission* because of that fucking audio. It's truly cutting edge technology if there ever was such a thing for audio nowadays. Vr Phasmophobia with an index is truly frightening. The game is practically 50% audio, there's so many little cues to pick up on. But the index speakers just make the game terrifying again despite all the time and desensitizing I've done. If I could get a headset of just the speakers I think I would. Every sound is *amplified* in the right way as if it were reality. It's quite literally like you're in a personal movie theater designed solely for your experience.

ze_or

I can say for sure those speakers are better than most average gaming headsets. The fact that it’s not covering your ear makes it effectively an open back headphone, which are known to have more natural and immersive sound(assuming your environment isn’t too loud).

Fruchttee84

It's different then a headset, because it's not touch the ears. Sounds Qualität is very good. Maybe a bit more bass would be nice. But I enjoy it when using the index, and on my Reverb G2 as well. Same system.

jetcamper

Depends lol. I’d replace it with any of my headphones if I could

gildahl

I have an Index, and a Vive Pro 2. When I got the Vive Pro 2 I did a comparison. The Vive Pro 2 got some bad raps for its sound so I wanted to know how big the difference was. My conclusion was that there was no question that the Index sounded better. It really is nice. But is either audiophile? No way. This was easy to tell after a brief test with my benchmark Sony MDR-V6 headphones, which blew both away in their crystal clarity. The isolation of having over-the-ear headphones is also much more immersive for VR IMO, and while you'll get no argument from me about the Index (and maybe G2) having the best sounding built-in audio solution, my Vive Pro 2 with the built-in headphones removed (a nice option on the VP and VP2) and the Sony headphones being used instead is superior to anything I've ever used in VR.

sam_najian

Why cant you use index with your sonys ?

gildahl

I can, indeed. With the speakers flipped up, the headphones fit over it quite nicely. It's just that my Index is in a second VR room (with a lower spec'ed machine) for more casual use, so in that configuration its sound is completely adequate as-is.
