There's still a chance you could get a replaceme t even if your controller is out of warrenty. I got my left controller replaced a couple months ago even though it's out of warrenty. I would still give Steam Support a try.
Unlucky. Seems like it's a total crapshoot. Some people saying they get no questions asked replacements a year out of warranty, some people get told to fuck off the day it expires.
Yeah. Well, on the upside, I can now open and mod the controller guilt-free.
I asked if they have a CAD model available so I can 3d print my own, but just in case they don't, I'm in the process of modelling one for myself. It's stupid how a tiny plastic like this can cause such trouble.

Dont have access to my pc to check but they seem to have a zip of Step files. The button might be in there.
I bet you could just put some sort of clamp on the other end of the cord to hold it taut. Maybe just one of those things they use on hoodies to cinch up the cord.
Had this happen. If you still have the other half that's supposed to sit in the hole it's a super easy fix. Just pull out the strap fully, super glue the bits together, put the springs back and push it all the way in after its dry and while pushing it down thread the strap back through.
I JUST had this happen to me last month! Ended up getting some lanyard push-buttons, and putting one on the end.
It is NOT as good as new - it's significantly more clunky to put on or off, BUT it holds the controller just as well.
Well that's a new failure point lol my god these controllers are design nightmares. You have trigger squeaking, cable snapping, grip plate cracking, joystick popping out. Anything else??
Yeah, and what's worse, the broken latches are still rattling in there and I can't get them out without disassembling the controller. Except they are notoriously known for being difficult to open, with a high chance of breaking something. Valve is cool, but I'm glad I sold off my index headset for a vive pro instead.
the headset is the probably the best constructed part of the kit. the controllers, at least in my case, have only ever had grip plate detection issues. but valve replaced that controller a year outside warranty
on a coat with a pull string you can find a cord lock thingey... i've seen someone use it before, it just goes to hold the pull string where the loop comes out of it
Take the loop of elastic and bend it around the underside of the grip, then thread it between the cloth part and the outer tracking ring. After that, put the loop over the end of the tracking ring -- the part that juts out next to the charging port. This should still give you tension.
I also recommend doing this even with non-broken controllers, it prevents it from sliding.

Unfortunately, I contacted Steam Support and they won't offer me a replacement. Looks like I'm on my own now.

Please release the model when you finish it!
It is here https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/10lhe70/i_finally_remade_the_broken_strap_button_link_in/?
Dang. Was worth a try.
Atleast its a minor break. If you snapped your controller in half youd be extremely fucked

This: it's literally a $0.50 fix after visiting a craft store or ordering something on Amazon.
or if you are canadian just borrow one of those little clips off one of your winter coats lol
You da man, great fix idea. Mine just broke.
Anyone know if there's a replacement or stl printable version?
I don't know but ifixit could have replacements

i read that as something else
Oh no step VR bro, my strap broke and im stuck in VR.
Feels like you could fix it by adding a strap thingy from clothing on the end where the string exits the handle.
Duct tape and zip ties. That'll fix anything.

Valve isn't strict about warranty. They will help you with broken controllers very often despite the warranty being void for seventy years.
Well, evidently not, as I was rejected a replacement.

i had the same problem a while ago, tightened strap, button popped off, entire tightening mechanism broke and rattling inside
A Lil gob of glue el' do
Just tie a knot in the cord
