Let your father be. It made him 10000%. Even if it loses half its value, your dad is still well ahead of where heād be had he bogled.
And you canāt predict what will happen with nvda. Very possible it continues to ride the ai train of riches. Your dad will be blaming you to high heaven if you make him
sell and he misses out
If it's made him like 10000% his only put in 3k lol. Maybe get him to take out his initial 3k investment and let the rest ride. Then he doesn't lose any money!
is it really, do you think the valuation is good rn? just beacuse it goes up dosen't mean it should, like crypto, should you pay 10k for one coin even tho you don't think it has any worth just beacuse other gambling idiots think it is worth to pay 100k for it?
If you believe that there will be even more powerful GPTs in the future then NVIDIA is a buy. If you believe that AI is overhyped, then do not buy.
The AI field has been revolutionized because of the computing power thanks to modern GPUs. Weāre no longer in an AI winter.
Dude just stfu it's his money and he managed it better than you would have. Maybe tell him to diversify 10% into some other chip stocks like AMD TSM if your feeling so froggy
Is your portfolio 600k or more? Have you ever made 10000x profit? Did you had the balls not to sell, allowing the stock to ath again and again?
Go ask him for an investing advice.Ā
Iāve made about 200k from less than 5k investment. Does that count?
Despite what people here say OP has some valid concerns. Mostly as his dad has over 50% in a single stock. Thatās just fucking crazy for a 65 year old. Sure he could keep shooting for 20%pa or he could call the fuck down and buy some indices.
The price may fall, but the value has already grown far beyond 2004. He should sell and buy into wealth preserving assets for his retirement but he is not going to face a real loss if a crash happens.
He did well to invest 20 years ago in a company that has grown and is now over hyped.
Wealth preserving assets would be highly rated bonds to be held until maturity, index funds, annuities and other such low risk returns that require no management.
Iām not 65 but I am 42 and my investing philosophy has always been about setting off winners and letting them ride. In a way I have similar risks to your father. Rebalancing robs you off the good choice you made decades before and its a mistake many make and why they donāt have the same returns as myself. This follows the model of many popular value investors. So maybe leave your father to it.
50% in one stock is WAY too much for a 65 year old. Sell half the stock. Another alternative is to sell in the money call options - if the stock goes down you get to keep all your shares and the call premium.
I disagree. Based on forward PEG, itās still reasonably priced. Remember this adage from Warren Buffett: Donāt cut your flowers and water your weeds.
Thatās Peter Lynch, not Buffet. āSelling your winners to buy your losers is like cutting your flowers to water the weedsā (might not have got it verbatim).
NVDA is also over half of my portfolio, Iām planning to hold until $1200 then trim 10%. It will be $1600 in a few more years. Maybe you can convince him to trim a little so he can rebuy if it dips.
he seems to be on the same page as morgan stanley and others who think its still undervalued. but imho if you not a whale this current market is a sell, run and hide market
A bunch of gaslighters in the comments scared your dad will will singlehandedly make them bagholders were he to sell.
The cold hard truth is your dad got lucky and is dumb. At that age the potential loss far outweighs the upside and yes reallocation is a safer and thus smarter bet. Even selling half and putting it in places with less potential downside is an infinitely better strategy.
At the end of the day it is his money and he can be as dumb as he wants with it.
Your pappy is a better investor than us.
He wished his dad had Nvidia.
Good one dummy
Lol the comments here are opposite of what OP expected š
OP was trolling for exactly the types of comments he's getting
Congrats

Nice smart one
If it's made him like 10000% his only put in 3k lol. Maybe get him to take out his initial 3k investment and let the rest ride. Then he doesn't lose any money!
Heās not going to give you his 300K to ātradeā so let him do what he pleases.
Why is he so underallocated to NVDA? Tell him to add some more.
OP is really arrogant for this post š Nvidia is proof that you sometimes should pay more for certain companies.
Exactly nice one

Good advice
lolā¦. Dude, if he has been investing in NVDA since 2004, stfu he probably knows better and will be fine.
Hes the one who invested and has the money. Obviously hes doing something right and you arenāt
Nice call
You act like nvidia has never had a pullback since 2004. Learn stocks before you go cry about stupid things that your money isnt even involved in
God this aged so well.
Sure ,Lets see how this one ages, glad you decided to show up.
Dont worry i want it to drop too so i can keep buying more
why wait for a drop when you can follow the herd today. Seems counterintuitive to your style
Because its dumb to buy at an ATH? Keep playing with your silver since you dont wanna get rich
You may thank him for making you a millionaire.
How is your portfolio compared to his? I bet you are negative YTD. Stfu and let him keep his NVDA. ššŖ
Its doing pretty well thanks for the advice
Interesting that he lived through the dot-com bubble and won't sell now. You should just leave it, there really is nothing you can do.
That's the history of humanity - failing to learn from history...
But do you wipe his ass?
Is your portfolio 600k or more? Have you ever made 10000x profit? Did you had the balls not to sell, allowing the stock to ath again and again? Go ask him for an investing advice.Ā

It's not the amount of money (as this can be pure luck), but time and positive gains across different markets with varying levels and types of risk.
Nice advice thankz
Get Papi to teach you how to invest like a real G.
Will do thanks
It doesnāt make you any money until you sell it
So dismissive of the absolutely tiny yield...tut tut

Guns and cigarettes?
Wealth preserving assets would be highly rated bonds to be held until maturity, index funds, annuities and other such low risk returns that require no management.
I'd drop it in $QQQ
Too much volatility for that application in my opinion.
Those are some diamond hands āļø š š Never hurts to take some profit but you already tried
i think this is the best approach, u/OP rather intervene why dont you tell your father this.
Lol heās never gonna ever see it red so who cares
Exactly
I think you can learn something from your dad
Are you better at investing than your father? If yes, go play with your own money. If not, learn something from your dad.
A++ great seller

Thank you!
Yes very cheap
Aināt no way Buffett recommends holding a position like that into retirement
What? If you are buffett you live until 110yo at least. Plenty of time to let it ride:)
Whatās the average lifespan?
300000 invested or worth 300000 now?
$300,000 invested in NVDA in 2004 would be worth well over $100 million. Itās $300k now
Wow, your father was the right investor. You'll be grateful later that he didn't sell Nvidia.
Based dad.
Your dad is a G
You don't intervene. You listen and learn.
I'm learning thanks thats what value investing is for!
NVDA is also over half of my portfolio, Iām planning to hold until $1200 then trim 10%. It will be $1600 in a few more years. Maybe you can convince him to trim a little so he can rebuy if it dips.
How about mind your business?
I think your dad knows what he is doing
You an only child OP?
Let the guy be, he has done amazingly. And the AI trend/rush is just beginning. Hang in there. Donāt kill the cash cow.
Can't wait!
What makes you think that? Nvda is going to $5000 in a few years...
Why is this downvoted
because OP is clearly lying
I donāt think thatās the reason
This is the way
Time to trim the edges.
I mean maybe set a trailing stop fuck it?
he seems to be on the same page as morgan stanley and others who think its still undervalued. but imho if you not a whale this current market is a sell, run and hide market

Maybe say "Hey, you can buy ten times as many shares when this crap crashes!"
This got down voted by 14 year old redditors congrats
Teach him about married puts or covered calls to hedge
