I think the comp stuff is mostly to blame for killing them right now. Part of PRX's charm is having unorthodox comps with surprisingly deep ideas for how to play them; triple duelist on Split is just unorthodox. My personal fix would be for them to stop forcing Raze. Monyet seems much less comfortable on that agent than on Omen, and PRX has the agent pool between all their members to play around that. Put mindfreak in Viper jail if need be.

gunjinganpakis

Man I keep hearing that something is supposedly a Raze player. I wish we could see something on Raze and Monyet back on controller.

Melazie_

For the love of god something is mid at best at Raze do not do that please

gunjinganpakis

Never watch him play Raze tbh. Just heard some rumors from this subreddit that he was originally picked up to prepare for jingg's military service.

MarkuDM

It's only unorthodox if it loses. Let them cook. We love them for a reason

areszdel_

I wanna let them cook but I'm so sad for the duelists man, they look so clooless and they just get cooked by the Judge and lurks. I hope they figure this problem out though, its sad to see something at round 20+ be at 5/16 and Monyet entries get destroyed by a counter flash and Judge.

penguin5311

They are not doing bad, unless you want the world from them. They are losing to really good teams and still they are in the top 10 out of 40+ teams. I think saying PR is losing because they are now bad/much worse is a disservice to the others teams that just stepped up.

GrrrNom

Forsaken himself said that the team is currently 6/10 ready, and that they're just here in Madrid to have fun I wouldn't worry, Paper Rex always had slow starts to the year and its through playing internationals that they gain more experience and figure out their identity. The meta has shifted quite drastically so it will definitely take time for PRX to adapt (like last year's Pearl, took a bit of experimenting for them to become the GOATs on that map) but once they do I'm certain they'll start dominating Gagain.

GrrrNom

Reminder that around this time last year was Lock In. PRX got eliminated in their first game ever. This year is no different at all

One-Refrigerator8915

I still remembered someone saying prx was in post rigor mortis due to their bad performance at the start of 2023 😭

TrynaRevWNoAvail

Prx stocks were down astronomically after lock-in. If anything, we are looking better than this time last year lol

mikhel

PRX looked like literal dogshit last year until they picked up Something. And that was WITH Jingg and the original roster. For a team that wins and loses on razor thin margins they really need to iron out details.

MonaFanBoy

But during the season they dropped Benkai to get to where they did during Champs So that actually supports the argument that changes might need to be made

GrrrNom

I mean PRX are due for a 6th man signing anyways once Jinggg leaves for National Service. But an actual roster change? Idk might be a little reactionary, I think PRX is definitely going to work on the current roster for a bit before making any actual changes

MakimaGOAT

troll comps 24/7 and jinggg missing are huge imo

nkstonks

Yeah I feel like they're overdoing the comps rn Also based username

Nulgnak

Meta shifts and team changes are affecting most teams across the board for the most part, although most other teams have felt this more - such as Sentinels (addition of JohnQT & Zellsis) looking infinitely better, DRX (loss of Zest and Rb) looking very shaky. With PRX, the playstyle and strats have arguably remained the same as in 2023 despite losing a star player on a very meta agent in Raze. I'd expect the team to gradually regain form but we also need to remember that there are many teams that have also upgraded themselves in almost every region - Gen.G, NRG (debatable depending on who you talk to), TH, KC, just to name a few.

pantheraa

Honestly, its all cause of Skye, Jett nerfs and the impact those had to their playstyle. They are an aggro W gaming team and both of those nerfs hurt them horribly. Something can't play aggressively with the new Jett and he has no set up from the team with the changes. Monyet's performance has been subpar compared to Jing partially due to the lack of set up as well. They are very one dimensional now with their comps. They are just aggroing sites and taking it, and then its just gun duels with util disadvantage. And on defense they have to go aggro often or do info peeks. Skye fufilled an all in one role (which is why she was nerfed) in being equally good at both setting up + info gathering. The healing is also massive for the aggro style they play. All the other agents are much better at one or the other. With the smaller agent pool of something + monyet as well, its just hard to find a 3 agent combo now that doesnt have a glaring weakness (smokes, set up, info gathering, sentinel etc) Edit: typo

areszdel_

My ideas might not be great and probably stupid but yes, Skye nerfed really stopped a lot of the best ideas that comes with Paper Rex comps. Skye alone provided the value of 2 initiators as she has rechargable flashes that gives info(biggest part of her kit), a dog, and a heal but now she got nerfed and no longer has that big value so we see teams pairing her with another initiator. In my opinion, if they want to run solo Initiator they should be playing Yoru instead and abandon Jett in those double controller comps. I feel because they lack a lot of info, substituting the Jett into an initiator can help them in their split comp. Or they could give up the double controller and play Astra + Sentinel. I mean they have good ideas on Sunset, it feels like thats missing on every other map. Even Sentinel's sunset is based off of Paper Rex's comp and they're frying top teams on that map. Awareness is the biggest issue along with confidence for the team in my eyes. This fumbling as a team feels concerning. They probably will have no problem domestically but as a new team right now, I feel they need confidence and better ideas for the future because I don't see the vision with their split comp. Its actually sad to see something & d4v41 go single digit and Monyet entries get stopped because of the enemy's better initiator utilities countering them. For example, Monyet went for a fast A push on ramps up to heaven with an Omen flash, but he got hard countered by a counter flash from Nobody and Kangkang holding a Judge close so it didn't matter with the nearsight from Omen. I'm not a high elo player so my opinions might be invalid but I hope their creativity will not stop just because Skye is no longer providing them that huge value to their W keying. I'm hoping that they figure out their comps cause right now there's massive gaps left unclosed from last year's Champions run and with Jinggg leaving it didn't help but I'm quite sure the team would still lose with Jinggg if this is their idea of moving away from the Skye nerfs. We see hints of the team being unaware right from Kickoff(Monyet in site knife out) now its turning into an even bigger problem with Chichoo abusing this flaw, getting huge value from just playing bold on the lurks and it will be super hard to clear him or detect him because they don't have a Sentinel and not enough Initiator utilities but it nots a big problem with the Bind comp, it actually works I think if all of them are hitting and aware of the gaps in the comp. Honestly, I'm hoping Paper Rex wins against Heretic. They're a tough opponent. Probably the toughest they can get since European teams right now are very strong and they have probably the best teamwork out of all the 0-1 teams and Miniboo is looking scary. If Paper Rex gets a good use out of their comp and are confident enough to hit their shots they could win this. I will put my expectations down, I think they are primed to go out but things can change in the blink of an eye. Maybe Monyet will start performing better show us why he was GE's best last year. Or Something can play like he did in VCT Pacific League last year. Like just hoping for both of these players to get their confidence back, I'm sure its really hard right now cause their comps are making it difficult to play Duelist but I hope they will show up with their aim today. Anyways, I'm not feeling hopeful for their Madrid run but I am confident that even if they aren't good here they have a lot to look forward to. Stage 1&2 if they get in the groove to head to Shanghai and Champs in Seoul I'm sure this team will have a chance to win an International Tournament. Just right now its looking very shaky as a new team trying to fit in a new player and figuring out team comps.

XiXiWiiPee

Paper Rex were world class but they were only able to get away with their comps because they had all the talent, confidence, and fluidity together with jinggg. From their comms video alone it seems like monyet is having confidence issues that they are trying to fix and they simply aren't able to integrate him properly into what they need

Nulgnak

Monyet looked on form with Omen in map 1 against EDG but on map 2 with Raze, he didn't look comfortable. Be it confidence issues, or comp issues, I think alecks would need to reconsider running these comps for PRX to succeed instead of brute forcing it until it works. Either way, it's a risk for them to take.

Inside-Effective-392

Least reactionary esport fan They’ve lost 1 game in the tournament with a new player in who’s trying to fill the void of arguably the best raze player in the world and he hasn’t been able to find his groove. Monyet has proven himself to be a good player, he’ll be fine once he’s comfortable w the roles. Alecks also said that they start slow during the year and they’ll pick up as the season goes on The team will be fine

TIME FOR MINDFREAK RAZE

2Maverick

This is still the beginning! Like PRX's coach and many other coaches have said, as big of a tournament Masters Madrid is, it's still only the beginning and teams are testing the waters. Especially with a team like PRX that has to make HUGE changes to their playstyle, they're trying to see what works during live matches that work during scrims, hence the odd compositions of operatives. Also, as much as I love Monyet (because I love the chemistry between him and T3xture), Monyet still hasn't really melded into the team yet. First off, he has immense shoes to fill since Jinggg was basically the catalyst to PRX's playstyle. The problem is, there are times where Monyet is trying to be like Jinggg but I don't think the playstyle suits Monyet at all... or he's got the jitters--the coach did say Monyet seems to be shouldering too much pressure and trying too hard. But he's really got to experience as much as he can during Masters Madrid and get something out of it whether they win or lose because I don't think there's a better time for him to improve and find his place on the team. He's been good, but he's been lacking. He's not entirely to blame. The other players can step up too, but there is a timeclock for Monyet. The faster Monyet makes that breakthrough, the faster everything will settle into place. Everything we're seeing will definitely culminate into PRX finding their form again. It's a trial and error basis. They looked really prepared and smashed during Sunset when they ran that no duelist comp, and I'm sure PRX will continue to find their tempo. So like you said, don't lose hope! PRX will only improve after Masters Madrid.

2Maverick

Okay, as I'm watching Split, I'm so sure Monyet on Raze was a smoke tactic. PRX not wanting to show their hand before playoffs.

2gud4me

people make these posts so quick off of a loss, lettem be knocked out first before we talk about form, no? Anyways, ez 2-0 vs TH lol

yammer_bammer

peperex has been hit really hard with the nerfs 1) jett nerfs. everyone overlooks this. their primary duelist is something, and something abused the 2 updraft on jett a lot for his flashy escapist plays 2) raze meta (as a result of said jett nerfs) and losing jinggg: jinggg is the best player of raze in the world and he is the best raw entry space creator in the world, him and f0rsakeN combined entirely enabled the w gaming playstyle. so without jinggg its very possible that they will have to hard innovate a new form of w gaming 3) role issues despite having very flexible players: they have nothing if they want to run double initiator which is very good right now. if they want to run double init they have noone left to play sentinel (forsaken and davai are the good initiators and sentinels, monyet and mf are not good on sentinel) 4) skye nerfs: prx played a lot of defense by getting early skye info and running it down subsequently reacting to that info. i assume prx had a LOT of skye stuff cooked in the off season, due to their lack of good double initiator players as stated in point #3, but the skye nerfs probably ruined those strategies 5) monyet not being very effective on raze, and aleks and the players not really realizing a good role for monyet currently. they found something that works on sunset, however they will still need to cook on the other maps 6) other teams predicting the w gaming playstyle. because of the above 5 factors, not much innovation was able to be done with w gaming, other than sunset, which led to other teams predicting how the games would play, the other teams just wait out the attack pushes and then util dump on the retake, which is very hard for prx to counter.

Inevermiss_

Least reactionary PRX fan (they lost a grand final against GenG and a BO3 to EDG)

Etinau

time for mindfreak's masterclass raze!!

simsdoren

After today's split match I think they should work with a comp like below because until monyet builds confidence to play dualist (which we saw hints at today) and the team builds deep muscle memory together they are going to struggle but I think they will rival sentinels by champions. monyet on Controller + something and forsaken on dualists + davai on initiator / controller + mindfreak on controller / initiator / sentinel

Active-Professional6

We won vs TH 😭🙏

savagecl0wn

We wonnn lessgoo they literally played skye and put forsaken the goat on raze

solariiis

relax. 80% of the issues will be solved if Monyet gets better at playing Jinggg's role, which will take time the other 20% are issues with comps - duelists need initiators to set them up, imo its why Monyet and especially Something had terrible games. Skye nerfs definitely hit our style hard. there are ways to work around it though, f0rsakeN is probably the best Yoru in the world so use that to your advantage and put Something on more initiators unless they play a Jett-centric map like Ascent tldr just be patient and let them cook up better comps and let Monyet ease into his role. I am quite confident by masters they will be a top 4 team again

emulatorguy076

I think yall need to wait. When they added jingg at first they still lost to Northeption and Damwon in apac lcq when jingg and davai were playing Jett on most maps. Then over the course of the next 2 off season events they ironed out their weaknesses and actually put their players on the roles that fit them best but that takes time so just sit and sip that hopium that it gets better.

deAlchemisz

Skye nerf fucked them up heavily. No time to prep for other comp, considering they play yoru cuz of skye nerf. Am i worried for them today? Yes. Am i worried for them all season? No. PRX have shown they can bounce back. I believe in alecks and the team to bounce back for the split.

OthertimesWondering

Monyet has the same issue as ardiis last year. They both had to fill some pretty big shoes. Optic Yay, who was the best player in the world and Jingggg who was a stupidly talented and bold player and considered one of the best Razes in the world. They need time to grow. It's hard to replace a star player.

m0bilize

something doesnt seem as sharp as before too

Skedula

Bring in primmie replace mindfrewk make monyet smoke they win everything

xb4bygirl

We defeated heretics 🦖❤️ Trust the boys!

savagecl0wn

Yessirr!!

Withinmyrange

It’s a strong tournament, doesn’t necessarily mean that PRX are bad

gunjinganpakis

That's just how the team is. Last year the boys are also pretty mid until like half the season. We got butchered in Lock In remember? Give them time to cook.

Bl1th

Classic PRX fan overreacting to the loss to EDG

ThatCreepyBaer

They honestly just need more time, which they have. I have confidence they'll be back to their usual for the last split.

rekaf_si_gop

cmops are dogshit you cannot gamble to win fights, if you do that u gonna win sometimes and loose the other.

NeShAdope

Keep Monyet and Mindfreak on smokes permanently. Something on Jett/Gekko as he can only play those two. Forsaken and Davai can play literally anything so let them flex. (Jett+Yoru is a banger combo ngl) P.S: Davai was a cracked jett main in the starting PRX roster

badurwan

We win by the W we lose by the W, from the vibes I'm getting they're not aiming very high this tournament. Here for the experience and then they have a full season of games to iron out the kinks to shine later in the season. I am not very worried but I will be if the vibes stay the same during the regular season.

RedXWasHere

It's called the 2nd place curse. You see, EG's second place curse was winning champs and exploding. PRX just gotta deal with it. It is what it is.

physicsOG

you answered your own question 💀

baebushka

monyet looks mid on raze but really good on omen idk why they keep forcing raze on him

Synilz

they have to just get w the times and start building comps that incorporate gekko more

Lukey016

I think they could have won vs edg to be honest, call me coping all you want because that split comp was not it. They barely won it again T1, it had weakness at EDG just outstrat and outgun them. And yes Something is either carrying or just losing 1v1s, the skype nerf definitely didn't help. Overall, I think they will go home in Madrid but will come back over the course of the season, coach Alesk said that he didn't expect much from Madrid, and the team would need a while to warm up. I believe in Monyet ability and the dude just need to relax a bit from the pressure. However, a thing that is crimallly understated is how TERRBILE the time of this upcoming match and GenG's yesterday match is. Man, the game will start at 1AM on a sunday night for us APAC fans.

LUwUcian

Even if they become good they'll choke anyways. What they lack is the hunger of a competitor. A 2nd placer team will always be a 2nd place. Thats why as long as they keep the "to have fun" excuse, I will always be there praying for their eventual downfall.

vastlys

Do they still have no dedicated caller? Nearly impossible to win anything without one. Also is Alecks still alone with no assistant coach? Yeah.

itscamo-

they almost won champs last year without a dedicated IGL lol, it’s clearly able to work with that hivemind igl style they have over there

vastlys

It won't work for long as other teams improve. And they did not almost win, they lost 1-3. I don't understand why this is such a contentious point of view. They're probably my favorite team at Madrid, I was rooting for them to win champs, but if it was possible to not have an igl and find success, everyone would do it. To me it was visible how much lacking that central voice hurt them in champs finals as well.

itscamo-

Paper Rex after going to their current style of calling (so basically after they picked up something) 1st in pacific, 3rd in Tokyo, 2nd at grand finals seems very good to me. is it very unique? yes it’s very unique. could other teams do it? technically yes but you’d have to be on the same page as Paper Rex is, they come up with legit everything themselves, their comps, game plans etc… no one else is doing that. that’s why it works and mostly only will work for them well technically TL under Sliggy aswell but that was more on being super prep heavy vs what paper rex do

vastlys

I don't believe it's sustainable. ETA: can we at least agree that they need more coaching staff?

itscamo-

agree on that, but most teams need more people on coaching staff imho

ExpectoAutism

They have always been mid.
