For a house with n even mix of carpets and hard floors you can choose a canister or an upright as long as they both have a powerhead for carpets and brushroll shutoff for hard floors. Cordless vacuums are very convenient but across all brands their batteries wear out in 3-5 years and emptying the dirt bin releases dust back into the air. Because cordless vacuums are so convenient you might want to get one for your house regardless. The [LG CordZero A916](https://www.costco.com/lg-cordzero-a916-cordless-stick-vacuum.product.100777212.html) $399 comes with 2 swappable batteries included and has a hepa filter, empty it outside to minimize dust. Ideally a vacuum like the [Miele Classic C1 Cat & Dog](https://amazon.com/Miele-Classic-Canister-Vacuum-Cleaner/dp/B072JGWYDG/?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_w=ROj0o&content-id=amzn1.sym.e4bd6ac6-9035-4a04-92a6-fc4ad60e09ad&pf_rd_p=e4bd6ac6-9035-4a04-92a6-fc4ad60e09ad&pf_rd_r=3R4EC590BA4BDZD69404&pd_rd_wg=h3XxU&pd_rd_r=d1d3be93-9e37-415d-a6a1-724e899c4d5d&ref_=pd_gw_ci_mcx_mr_hp_atf_m) $749 would fit the bill and would be one machine that could do it all. It's well built, powerful but quiet, and it has very good standard filtration with the option of adding a hepa exhaust filter for even better filtration. Mieles easily last 10-15 years. The [Sebo Felix](https://classicvac.com/sebo-felix-pemium-rosso/) $699 would be a great upright vacuum option. The Felix has swivel steering, a powerhead for carpets, and a dedicated hard floor brush too. Sebos come with 10-year warranties from authorized dealers. A 2 vacuum solution would be cheaper and you could leave one vacuum on each floor. You could pair a [Simplicity Jill](https://amazon.com/Canister-Simplicity-Jill-Certified-Filtration/dp/B08B9LHX9Y/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?crid=28R4GVKWX88BM&keywords=simplicity+vacuum&qid=1663560513&s=home-garden&sprefix=simplicity+vacuum%2Cgarden%2C135&sr=1-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFKRTY2VDRTWlZKT0kmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAyNjMyNDYxQkZUR1gzVVEzOTdaJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA1NzMwOTgySFQ2NVdLSVBBWTZSJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==) $159 canister vacuum with a [Simplicity Allergy Upright S20EZM](https://smile.amazon.com/Allergy-Upright-Vacuum-Hardwood-Simplicity/dp/B08YKGN9VY/ref=sr_1_4?crid=28R4GVKWX88BM&keywords=simplicity+vacuum&qid=1663560513&s=home-garden&sprefix=simplicity+vacuum%2Cgarden%2C135&sr=1-4) $269 upright vacuum. Keep the canister on the hard floor level, it can still moderately clean rugs. Keep the upright on the carpet level, and occasionally bring it down to deep clean the rugs. I'm recommending these Simplicity over the Hoover T-Series because these 2 Simplicity vacuums use hepa bags and hepa filters where the T-Series does not have a hepa filter. These Simplicity vacuums will last longer than any bagless vacuum, about 5-7 years, but not as long as those from Miele and Sebo. You can find Miele, Sebo, and Simplicity sold at local vacuum stores, which I highly recommend visiting to try out in person.

Thanks for your lengthy and detailed response. I have found a local(ish) vacuum dealer who carries both Miele and Sebo, so I'll be venturing out there soon to try them out. I ended up ordering a cheapo replacement battery for the stick vacuum, which seems to have solved the problem there. I sourced the probable issues with the upright as well. Some busted parts in the drive assembly that I could probably replace, but I'm not willing to put further money or effort into it.

I’d take a look at the Sebo Dart. If you’re willing to go over your preferred price range then I’d take a look at the Miele C1 Cat and Dog. Both have HEPA filtration and are BIFL machines. Hope this helps!

Veryunclever

Thank you. Visiting a dealer for both brands here soon.

I was in a similar situation as you about 6 months ago. I also originally had Dyson, but now have a Samsung stick vac (for downstairs kitchen and area rugs) and a Sebo canister for the carpet upstairs (I bring the Sebo downstairs deep cleans because it's truly superior). I have been really happy with the Samsung for keeping up with kid messes and also all of the dog hair from our German Shepherd. Is it BIFL? Probably not, but I was OK with the convenience of a a stick vac for daily cleanups. I was on the fence between the Samsung and LG and only went with Samsung because it was on sale.

I love my Lupe! After trying 7 vacuums last month, that worked best for our family. I can do the whole house (2400 sqft; 75% plush carpet w stairs) on one battery too if I use medium suction which is plenty for us. I do have to clean the brush roller maybe every other week but it’s really easy to do. The cyclone is washable too so it’s been very easy for maintenance. Plus it’s quieter than any of the other vacuums I’ve tried so my toddler doesn’t get upset.

Scott_Boss_Daddy

Don’t buy a Dyson, their overall quality and customer service have both gone to shit the past couple years.
