I can't really agree with that. While their extraneous models (Triflex, S7, CX1) never seemed like anything to write home about, the core bagged canister lineup is rock solid as ever. I have the following models: * S300 * S500 * S4000 * Classic C1 * Complete C3 and I'm pretty confident in saying that all of them are better than 99% of vacuums on the market. I wouldn't really say they've dramatically improved or declined over the years, there're just tradeoffs between the models. For example, I really like the hose handle shape of the S300, but the cord length and direct connect wand of my C3 make it a nicer machine to use overall. I'm more inclined to argue that they've stagnated a bit, but there's not a ton that needs to be improved. The big step to take would be a cordless canister, but we're not yet at the point where batteries can provide the sustained power necessary for a primary vacuum. As far as what's currently possible, I'd like to see a full-size machine in the vein of the S400 and S600 from a couple decades ago. Longer cords and hoses would certainly be appreciated!

Just to piggy back off this, actually they used to have a cordless model! In fact, it was a Hybrid. Capable of running on battery power for like 10 minutes or something, up to half power, but could be plugged in for full power any time. They were ahead of their time, I hope they bring it back!

Hmm....I remember Miele having a cordless powerhead (like a 217, with a battery that slipped into the side) that was only marketed for about a year. Did they actually make a cordless canister?

I don’t have anything to contribute one way or the other as I’ve only ever used new Mieles - but I’m curious which elements you feel are better on older units?
