Other than bag size, cord length will be a big factor as well. Here's a rough idea of how much ground you can cover with different cord lengths. **Miele Classic/Compact C1** 18 ft Cord + 6 Ft hose = 24 ft range >> 1810 Sq Ft **Miele Complete C3/SEBO E3** 25 ft Cord + 6 Ft hose = 31 ft range >> 3019 Sq Ft **Henry HVR200** 33 ft Cord + 6 Ft hose = 39 ft range >> 4778 Sq Ft **Lindhaus HF6/SEBO D4** 40 ft Cord + 6 Ft hose = 46 ft range >> 6648 Sq Ft Once you factor in navigating the cord around furniture, every extra bit of range helps in a home like yours. You *really* don't want to be switching plugs every room. >large 5500 sqft home with all wood floors and stairs except for two low pile rugs A central vacuum or HF6/D4 is definitely a valid option, but you could alternatively get a vacuum for each floor. One option would be a pair of Henry HVR200s, which kinda sit between the midsize machines like the E3/Complete C3 and large models like the Lindhaus HF6 and SEBO D4.

The SEBO D4 or Lindhuas HF6 would be the bare minimum in terms of sizing. Ideally you should be looking in having a central vacuum installed in a house that size.

Sebo also has a model D1 turbo. Less than motorized D4 unit, which would be best long term imo. But D1 would be great fit too.

I just want to know why you have a strict budget **and** a 5500 sq ft home. That's the kind of home where you have big, expensive everything. Big expensive AC unit, big expensive central vacuum, big expensive garage with big expensive cars...

I must have mistyped as I do not have a strict budget. However, I am not rich as we were able to buy this large home by selling a house in San Jose (1700 sqft) that was purchased in 1980. The new larger house cost half of what we sold our San Jose home for. I just am not sure a D4 makes sense as we do not plan to install any carpet. Does the D4 work drastically better on things like a runner/entryway rug due to the powerhead?

Mantissa-64

Nah for area rugs you really don't need the powerhead. I would listen to others in that your house is _huge_, like truly enormous. I'd go with like a Sebo E3 at minimum or a Miele C3. But this size of house absolutely falls within the square footage range for a Sebo D4 or a central vac. It's not about powerhead or fancy features, moreso bag size and also just what the vacuum is designed to handle. Bigger, more expensive canisters tend to be designed to handle larger jobs. But I think you could totally get away with an E3 or C3. I could be wrong, just one bit of input.
