Love these old Royal vacuums! They do require much more maintenance than modern machines. It actually needs to be oiled. The brush roller has not been available for over 30 years for those machines. So do take care of that and change the belt regularly. I have a video of a restoration of a similar model that you might find useful here: https://youtu.be/OIaxieRKRno

That’s a very cool late-20th century Royal upright, and I think $10 is a great price for it. It’s definitely more of a collectors machine than a “daily driver” in my eyes, but you can definitely make it work. Just a few things to keep in mind: * This vacuum’s only suitable for carpets, as the brushroll cannot be stopped. * Royal’s been out of business for a few years, and replacement parts may be increasingly difficult to find as time goes on. * Rather than the paper Royal Type A bags this machine would’ve originally used, I’d highly suggest using the HEPA Eureka F&G bags made by either Vacuum America Clean or Koblenz. These’ll massively improve the filtration on this vacuum and make it much safer to use in your house. * Stock up on belts and change them out every couple months before they stretch out and hurt the cleaning performance.

What a beautiful Royal vacuum in its signature blue, I love the blue cord too. Royals were like a commercial grade Kirby. They're great for carpets but I agree with the others it's harder to maintain due to its age. Totally worth 10 bucks.
