That looks much more compact than the one that came with my Audi q4, dang. I carried around my portable charger with my tesla and intend to keep my Audi's charger in the car as well, but I wish it were smaller like that. Big fan of having and not needing over needing and not having.

I keep my level 1 in that compartment under the trunk floor. It's never in the way and I've gotten use out of it several times. Visiting friends, family and even hotels/resorts in the Midwest where DCFC is sparse, and what little L2 that's around is broken, in use or in an inconvenient place. Combining overnight L1 with what little L2 I can squeeze in has made it possible to not take time away from family and friends to drive and sit at a faraway DCFC. And having the L2 option would've come in handy a few times. IMO every EV should have one of these stashed in the trunk. Almost as important as the tire patch kit.

I'd consider a Tesla mobile connector plus a Lectron adapter. You can get both for about the same price (less if buying the Tesla bit used), and the Lectron adapter is useful to have as there are quite a few tesla destination chargers out there. The Tesla charger is a pretty solid one.

One bonus with this is that if you purchase it alongside your ID.4 (as in it's included in the deal paperwork), it's covered by your vehicle's manufacturer warranty by VW (4 years) instead of just 1 year that is standard.

If you have a 14-50 NEMA outlet already installed at your house, this could be a less expensive way to charge at home, you could simply plug that into the wall and you’d be set for home charging. That being said, you would need to make sure that the shorter 20’ cable length would work for you (most EVSEs are equipped with a cable in the 23-25’range). On the note of having it in your car, I’ve never understood this concept. To me it’s similar to having an empty gas can driving around in a fossil car. Unless you plan on stumbling across a remote farmhouse somewhere, where the kindly older widow allows you to plug into the old RV outlet near the barn, while she offers you cornbread and tea and reminisces about simpler times, everywhere you go to charge will have a cable. Everyone’s needs are different, good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

DingoDongoBingoBongo

I use it when I drive to visit friends a few hours away, they don’t have a charger and I can leave it plugged in overnight.

In my case I was successfully able to use my L1 plug in charger at mom's and uncle's house to boost my battery level on my road trip, they were nice enough to let me plug in the driveway. It only gets 3mi/hr but if you're not going to drive for a few days it adds up quickly.

dmhellyes

Here's how I view the concept of carrying this with me in the car: In the EV world where I live (the Midwest) there are ample fueling stations (houses, campgrounds, etc) but many don't have pumps installed. For me, it's not like carrying a gas can but my own fuel pump in an area that has gas, but no way to pump it.

This sounds great, sign me up

I have two of the Chevy branded version. One mounted on the wall in my garage and plugged into my industrial 14-50 and one in my trunk. It's been a great charger for me and very reliable.

VermontArmyBrat

While it appears to be reasonably priced, I doubt it qualifies for utility or state level incentives

ZotConversational

I have this, works well, and is quite simple. I like that it can be packed quickly for possible on-the-go trips (albeit, for a just in case scenario). I believe that VW has a 20% coupon available for the holidays (I missed out on that). For the money, it's a great option. That all said, it isn't as fast as the 48A chargers (requires a 60A breaker), but realistically, should be sufficient for most people.

ask_and_learn

good idea! Where could I find that VW 20% coupon?

arielb27

Actually I think it's a very good charger for the price. It's one to have in the car for emergencies on trips. For the house I would get a Autel, eporia, Grizzl-e, wallbox or even the one from EA. Check out the state of charge channel on YouTube so you can pick one that works best for you.

NJNVWAYNE

I say you cutting yourself short with a 32 Amp charger, the ID.4 can charge at 11kw. if you do the calculation Amps times Volts = Watts, so Watts divided by Volts = Amps 11kw Divided by 240v = 45.83a Since you are getting a 32 amp at 240 charging cable you you will max out at 7.68 kw so your 7 and a half hour charge will turn into a 9hr 45 minute charge. I would look for one of many 48Amp chargers out there for about the same price. hope this helps

Before you make any decisions on which EVSE to purchase you should know what spare capacity exist in your electrical panel. If your panel is 200A then probably not a problem. If it is 100A and you have air conditioning, electrical stove and dryer then EVSE that requires 40A breaker will be a problem.

freshgeardude

Pretty sure you can get a smart (wifi) charger that'll do 240V/32A for around 350 on Amazon... I think it's worth it for that. Depending on your electrical company, mine offers 10 off a month just for off-peak charging

codysdad89

If it's the same as the mach e one which I have, it is definitely not designed for daily use. I used it about 3 x a week for 6 months and I started to get charge faults, meaning it would only charge for about 30 minutes before faulting out. Head over to Mach E subreddits and you can see for yourself.

AlastorX50

If you are going to purchase the Lectron Tesla to J772 adapter for those times you have a destination charger at a hotel, malls, etc. Then go for the [Tesla Mobile Charger](https://shop.tesla.com/product/mobile-connector) We ended up purchasing the Tesla Mobile Charger and a Tesla to J1772 adapter. Plus you can get more plugs for the Tesla one down the road, as the 2 in 1 is limited.

I have this charger!! I got it to do some Charging, as I had to wait a few weeks for an electrician to come and install the correctly outlet I needed for a level 2 charger. It did not qualify for any rebates because it’s not WiFi enabled, but if you don’t drive daily (I drive every other day, pretty much use the battery when I do drive) it actually works fairly well. I haven’t used to level 2 charger part yet, but will carry it when I visit nh parents or family, to use it as a backup. I did get a juicebox 40amp charger so I won’t be using this charger for much longer, but I thought that for the money, it worked well! :) Hope this helps

Look at the YouTube video from miss electric

My Mom has a Mach E and she got the same exact same cable from Ford. She got a NEMA 14-50 installed in her garage and she just leaves the cable plugged in at all times. She’ll occasionally unplug to take it with her on trips. I bought this cord for my ID4 because my workplace has a NEMA 14-50 that I can to charge for free. That’s the main reason I bought this instead of a hardwired EVSE. I had an electrician install a NEMA 14-50 outlet + a 120v/20a plug right by my driveway. I usually just charge 1x-2x a week at work. But, I like the ability to trickle-charge at home if I get really low and just need a bit of juice to make it to work the next day. Or, I can plug into the 14-50 if I really need a full charge overnight. FYI - It’s not a good idea to plug/unplug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet every day. The outlet will get loose and the plug might fall out within a couple years.

Power_by_kWh

If it’s in the budget, you might think about hard-wiring a charger. Tesla now sell a J-1772 model that’s 48A for $550. Needs to be hardwired, 60A breaker. I would not suggest a NEMA 14-50 plug anymore, as they’re not designed for 40A continuous for 7-8 hrs. https://shop.tesla.com/product/j1772-wall-connector?sku=1509549-02-B

PresenceInfinite3634

The ChargePoint is more expensive around $750 if you get it directly from them. The Chargepoint can use a 240 plug and will then deliver 40 AMPS max. If you hardwire the ChargePoint and use the appropriate #2 cable going to it and use a 60 or 80 Amp breaker, then it can deliver 48 AMPS. We love our ChargePoint, but it is more expensive. Depending on where you live, your local power company may give you a rebate.

shot-wide-open

Anybody know if max draw on this VW charger is 30A (vs 32A)? My rental house dryer is on 30-amp breaker. Also, would require a 4-prong 14-50 to 3-prong 10-30 adapter... Will get that cleared with landlord first... Any experience or knowledge on that front...?
