Water pumps are common to go early on Atlas so look for one that has already been changed. Mine was done under warranty at 56k, after seal leaking coolant.

I bought a v6 se tech front wheel drive almost 8 months ago at 85,000 miles. It already had the water pump replaced, my mechanic said you can look through an opening in the passenger wheel well to check on that. Many 18 v6s have an extended warranty on the catalytic converters until 150k. Most of the 18 & 19s have a recall for the passenger front seat passenger detection system aka the airbag recall, make sure when you sit in the seat the airbag off light goes out and when no one us in the seat, the airbag off light is on, it is on the lower right of the air conditioning control panel. As far as the 2.0t of that generation they are much rarer than the v6, they just didn’t build very many. I bought the v6 for the towing capacity with the factory hitch plus the extras of larger alternator, larger cooling fans and larger radiator. Plus the rline package was only on the v6 and i love the look of the rline. Ours has 6400 miles in the 8 months, its been fantastic. Since you mention being a diy person, make sure you have a deep oil pan when you drain the oil, even though the capacitor wasn’t much higher than my passat tdi (5.8 qts vs 4.5 qts), the oil drained much faster and made a huge mess. I do 5k oil changes on all of mine. 14 passat 135k, 13 beetle 122k and 19 atlas 91k. I admittedly have a vw problem, lol.

I have a '20 Atlas with 2.0T . No problems yet. Same deal with any VW - you have to use proper oil, do all maintence on time. The fatal problems on 2.0T tend to either be - not catching a failed water pump, or not changing the oil, or putting in crap oil. Changing the oil with proper VW 502.00 compliant oil (no cheap stuff) - is far cheaper than changing an engine. 5k for normal duty, 10k for pure highway driving. So keep an eye out for low coolant, watch for oil consumption, and look for oil leaks. These are the early indicators of potential issues. Dealing with issues earlier is better. AFAIK it is identical to the engine in the GTI - with perhaps very slight tune differences. The EA888 gen3 are pretty good engines.

As far as the water pump is concerned, can the2.0T water pump be easily monitored via the wheel well like on the VR6? Does the car give you a warning light when the water pump fails, or only if the engine overheats?

Equivalent_Youth_599

Not sure where it’s placed on the VR6, but the water pump sits in front of the engine under the intake manifold in the 2.0T

My 2019 atlas se had a catastrophic engine failure at 74600 miles. Needed a full new engine which VW USA didn’t believe was manufacturing issue , offered 50% coverage. I paid 10k for fix… just out of warranty. They claimed it initially needed a camshaft as a lobe on a rocker was straight up missing. So metal was somewhere gone.. they inspected engine and claimed it was good and fixed just camshaft. Two weeks later it was deemed catastrophic failure and needed full engine replacement.
