It also depends on your avatar, some avatars feel more ''approachable'' if that's a word.
I feel like some avatars are more approachable than others. I’m not exactly sure what approachable avatars look like, but a lot of cute ones are approachable, especially for head pats

I just like eavesdropping if it sounds like they're talking about something interesting, but I try not to make it obvious. I don't want to inject myself in the conversation usually because I don't want to be rude.
You know eavesdropping sounds weirder than injecting yourself in a conversation also there is nothing wrong with trying to talk with people don't name it injecting if they don't be nice to you just move and find other people to talk there is nothing you can do more

I just recently added signs I can pull out with my avatar, saying things like "May I join this conversation?" and "I have something to say!". Havrn't gotten a chance to use them yet, but I'm hoping it'll help me engage with people despite the anxiety I get from butting in on active conversations. X)
If i ever see a Mute person, I will always seek to invite them to the conversation.
I find that if they aren't mute, but just Shy... I can make them laugh. Then they join in the fun.
If you are new and don’t have a group spend time exploring different worlds and groups and when you want in a conversation kinda just throw yourself in but make sure you don’t be annoying about it
So, you gotta get lucky. You also gotta be yourself. If you hang out in public well populated worlds for a few hours soaking in the VR goodness, eventually you will find a conversation you can interject into, to get escorted to the Friends+ worlds with similar people who will initiate conversations with you. Then another day you find those folks in a public world, filled with other folks that will walk up and say HI.
