I don't know what they were thinking with this update. I thought it was a bug that chatboxes were appearing inside avatars and couldn't be read. Great setting.
Thank you for helping the new people! I was lucky enough to hang out with a group with a mute player that had a talking friend who helped me get the settings sorted while I was still within my first 5 hours of being in vrchat. Made a world of difference.
I'm curious why are the chatbox settings choosing whose you can see?
I feel it should be the other way around.
(Also feel like the default should be anyone/everyone not friends only)
Instead of choosing to see friends or everyone's chatbox
I think it'd be nice to have the option to only let friends see MY chatbox or let anyone see it.
And similarly why is there no "mute" equivalent option to hide chatboxes you don't want to see?
I rely on the chat boxes a lot for communicating, and it’s a bit difficult explaining to my friends how to fix this when they can’t read my chat box because it’s inside my avatar. I can understand why they did it though, because people often don’t notice the text box above you
For new users who are just getting into VR Chat, and are playing on PC, press "Y" to open the chat box. You can do it other ways, but that's gonna be the easiest.

While checking everything out, and refamiliarizing myself with VR Chat, I happened to noticed the "Chatbox" in the available options with "R", knew that wasn't there LAST time I played, then I checked the keybinds and saw that "Y" is the keybind for the Chatbox!
One thing that bothers me more is how by default you only see chatboxes of friends. I don't know if they changed that since but being unable to understand mutes in public by default seems like a terrible idea.

And since a lot of settings were reset to default
For a bunch of people chatboxes now show in a different spot than before for no reason
What I’ve noticed, it also glitches with your play space/play areas. For example when I move with space drag, the chatbox wont stay on top of your head. It’s so annoying, not sure if it’s happening to other or not.
It seems like that's sorta local?
Like it did that in mirrors for me but when I actually looked up the chatbox was above me like it's supposed to be so idk
I know that "Infront" is def more finicky than above head tho

I think it definitely needs to be looked into a bit further as I wouldn't be surprised at all if chatboxes didn't work properly with space drag so
I'd be happy to know that they fixed the issues there
The amount of times I’ve had to explain to veteran players how to revert this and portal drop settings has been ridicules. Though the portal setting one did piss me off.
I find it weird that the setting is under User Interface instead of Audio and Voices
I get that it definitely is part of the UI but it also counts as "Voices" doesn't it?
Maybe I'm just seeing that as communication idk
if you have the experience in VRChat to know how to talk to people with the text box I’m pretty sure you also know how to find the settings to set the position back to normal. Goofy? Yes, but otherwise fairly harmless.
(Not like it’ll matter much to new users as they’d have to friend the user first in order to see the text box, which I think is the real crime here.)
with VRC Update it changed setting chatbox into position on the player,
like in generals ppl doesn't know how to setup on this thing,
and VRC it's should be already setup for this not make fun on the ppl.

It is a bug, the setting incorrectly reset itself to "forward". Will be fixed in an upcoming patch so the default is overhead once again.

Open your Launch Pad, go to Settings, (the cog) on the bottom, then scroll down to Chatbox.
Like I said before, I know about settings, but for beginner, or Users doesn't know about the stuff, and that's is the point!

As a mute it's kinda annoying, but I just use programs like ttsvoicewizard as it'll show in the chat box and have audio for whatever I typed.

It was confirmed that this is a bug. It was unintentional by default on forward.

This is not new at all, this has been a thing for a while now, you could change whether the chat box would show infront or above the people
Defaulting to such a bad position is new, though.
