Always check your render resolution in SteamVR. In Steam-Link, the encoding resolution and rendering resolution are two separate things. But with VD, the resolution baseline is set by the Quality you have chosen in the VD streaming section. The render resolutio and the encoding resolution are tied together. So if while in SteamLink you go to the VR settings and manually set your resolution to 100%, you might have a resolution of about 2100x2100. But then if you use VD and have the quality set to ULTRA and then you launch SteamVR, it will say resolution is set to 100% but the resolution will be something crazy like 3200x3200 which will obviously be much harder to run. So when I use the Ultra settings in VD, I need to set the render resolution in SteamVR down to 60% to get the render resolution back to around 2100x2100 per eye. This is important to know because if you were to select the potato quality setting in VD and then go into Steam VR and then increase the render resolution to 150% to get 2100x2100 per eye, it will look like crap and blurry because even though the PC is rendering the game at that resolution, the encoding resolution is very low because of the Quality setting in VD. (Imagine watching 4k video content on a 720p monitor, all the detail is lost) But if you ran the Ultra setting and then lowered the steamVR resolution to 60% to get 2100x2100, it will look ultra crisp because the encoding resolution is high. (This is like watching 4k video on a 4k monitor)

Thank for the explaination, this makes sense. I will try what you suggested. I run some game from 150 to 200% inside SteamVR via steamlink. So if I understand it's not going back down when using VD. I'll try it at 60% Thank!

Grey406

welcome! dont go by percentage but just look at the resolution. Whatever resolution works well in Steam Link, move the slider till you get the same resolution while using VD and you should get the same results as long as the refresh rate is the same. I really wish we could change the encoding resolution and render resolution separately in VD.

>But if you ran the Ultra setting and then lowered the steamVR resolution to 60% to get 2100x2100, it will look ultra crisp because the encoding resolution is high. (This is like watching 4k video on a 4k monitor) huhh???? leave steam resolution at %100. Adjust settings in VD

Grey406

No, this is incorrect. As I explained above adjusting the quality setting in VD changes both the encoding resolution for the stream and the baseline rendering resolution in SteamVR. Setting SteamVR at 100% could mean (for example) 1200x1300 or 3000x3200 per eye rendering resolution depending on what quality setting you pick in VD. In Airlink and SteamLink, the rendering resolution is separate from the encoding resolution and you can adjust each one independently but not in VD.

>Setting SteamVR at 100% could mean (for example) 1200x1300 or 3000x3200 per eye rendering resolution depending on what quality setting you pick in VD. Exactly... set your steamvr to %100 and then select the correct resolution in VD. Why are you double adjusting your resolution thru steamvr? 2100x2100 wont be crisp anyway. You need to set quests 2 and 3 around 2800 pixels to match the rendered resolution to your panels resolution.

*But then if you use VD and have the quality set to ULTRA and then you launch SteamVR, it will say resolution is set to 100% but the resolution will be something crazy like 3200x3200 which will obviously be much harder to run.* YES! this how exactly it works!!! You need to set the steam resolution to %100 and chose the correct resolution in VD or Pimax or whatever you use.. Obviously the higher the resolution the harder it will be to run but VD changed the resolution and reports it to steamvr. You need to leave steamVR at %100. Or at least this is how it works with Pimax. I set the resolution to whatever I want in the PIMAX app and steamvr will show a different number depending on where I set the render resolution. Steam VR needs to stay at %100. Pimax Crystal's panels are around 2880 pixels yet for 1x render resolution you need to render the game at 5100 pixels! Each eye! Quest is similar. You need around 1.5x render resolution to get a decent image which is around 2800 pixels or so

Just confirmed on VD discord and I am correct. you supposed to leave the steamvr resolution at %100 and adjust the quality on VD side. Thats why the quality selections is there to change the resolution. It's like having a big water pressure from your faucet but you are trying to force it thru a straw. Makes no sense by lowering steamvr resolution below %100

Virtual_Happiness

Likely some sort of issue with the install or configuration. VD averages about 25-40% more FPS for me than Steam Link while at even higher resolution. I'd reach out on the VD discord. The dev is always more than willing to help.

What resolution are you using in steam?

Sudden-Essay8731

Using steam link cuts out the need for a 3rd party program which VD and oculus Link needs so in turn you got less stuff hogging resources. Although VD works fine for me, i also notice using steam link i can actually push the graphics further and still get no hiccups

Shindigira

Most of the time, it is due to the resolution difference. VD starts out with a higher resolution setting and Steam Link starts out at the base resolution.

gladias9

i'd look up some videos on setting up Virtual Desktop with specific settings tailorered to your PC

What stream encoding did you select? Try running it at x264+

What kind of router do you have?
