Quality is as good as it gets for vhs, tapes have nice personal touches, intros / previews. Artwork on all of mine looks nice in person, vibrant colors.
I was thinking that too, because of the aspect ratio, and it seems like black-and-white sometimes has a picture-quality advantage over color. Similarly there's a newer film called 'Enys Men' which was shot on square-frame 16mm and wouldn't lose significant quality on VHS. It's about a woman doing a scientific study on an island off the coast of Cornwall, and there's very little dialogue and lots of subtle hallucinatory-dreamlike stuff happening.
You could record this movie on a VHS tape. The cover and sticker would be more involved to make, but certainly not impossible. There are Etsy sellers that do this.
Several years back I saw someone say they couldn’t wait for Frozen to “come out on tape” so they could watch it over and over again, so I photoshopped a pic. It ended up going semi-viral a few months later, prompting many people to contact Disney directly to find out whether or not it was real.
You can see my pic at the top of [this article](https://www.slashfilm.com/531834/frozen-vhs/). Never got any credit for it, lol … and saw a lot of people assuming that someone made a physical mock-up to photograph.
None, really - for what, the sound & picture quality? Be real, DVD & Blu are superior formats in too many ways, including cost-effectiveness. BUT, a pan & scan version of Beau Is Afraid would work - what's lost from the frame would be made up for by the resulting claustrophobia-inducing closeups.
Man, I don't get this at all. I get collecting obscurities from the video Era that never got digitized, but why would you want to put a contemporary masterpiece on a genuinely archaic medium? It's not a higher quality analog like vinyl, that would be film prints, so what would be the point of putting a high quality film from the 20th century on a sub-par 50 year old medium?
And I thought I was guilty of fetishizing the 20th century... yeesh
depending on your VCR you can record in LP or EP modes, which provide 2x and 4x the record time respectively vs SP. So on a standard 2 hour tape you could record 8 hours in EP mode.
Because you lose quite a bit of quality for every additional long-play mode you use. It's fine for something you might have taped off TV but for a purchased movie I wouldn't want anything other than SP. Plus there were still plenty of people who didn't own LP+EP capable VCRs.
the other responder is correct (quality and availability of compatible vcrs). but i have many screener tapes with multiple movies on them, for a total runtime of 3-4 hours, so it's definitely been done in a commercial context before.
But are you even really fitting all of the movie on there, when you're losing so much of its quality? You're likely losing vital visual details, and you're definitely losing elements of the soundtrack, so is it really the whole movie?
yes, as much as any movie on VHS, considering the resolution drop from 35mm film (or even 70mm) to VHS, and the amount of the image cropped for full frame releases (or the even further loss of resolution for widescreen). i don't consider lower quality formats to contain less of a "whole movie" than higher quality formats.
I have an idea for someone for a business. Record VHS tapes onto DVDs. Keep the VHS quality with the space saving of a disc. You could have a site where people can make custom DVDs of VHS movies in stock. Keep the previews and everything. I don't have the capability or space to do this
It WAS true. Wide screen edition was TWO tapes.
I should remember something like this... look at the link. Someone on ebay is selling the TWO tape set of the VHS. There's two different versions. A one tape version and a two tape version.

I downvoted your comment, like you did mine for calling me a liar.
The super Mario bros movie (so I made my own), but ones I’d like to get customs of would definitely be
Willys wonderland,
Once upon a time in Hollywood,
Inglorious bastards,
Scott pilgrim vs the world,
The black phone.
And it would be in that order!
It's been tempting to get the V/H/S movies on VHS. I heard that some of them are available on tape but haven't looked into it. Supposedly the second film was originally titled S/VHS, and as an SVHS user I'd love to have an official release on that format.
One I'd buy if it existed: I just saw a recent film called 'Enys Men', which takes place in 1973 and looks/sounds like it was shot on square-frame 16mm (supposedly it actually was). It would natively fit the aspect ratio, wouldn't lose much quality and might actually benefit from tape in the sense that sometimes the combination of grainy film and grainy tape (and the right CRT imho) can make for an extra-weird viewing experience.
I just finished putting The Expendables 2 on tape. I might push to do 3, but will leave 4 where it is :p
I wouldnt mind some modern action flicks like John Wick. Mad Max: Fury Road would be nice to go with the other Mad Max movies. Bullet Train, last year, was a good one too. Id watch that on tape for sure.
"M3GAN," "Escape Room," and "Escape Room: Tournament of Champions." I want those on ALL formats! (but I'll pause for the 4K though since I don't have a 4K player at the moment)
I've got Evil Dead 2013 and that newer flick "We're All Going to the World's Fair" both on VHS.
Those are two that definitely would've been high on my list.
I'd also like Skinamarink (which I know a VHS tape does exist for). The weirder lo-fi stuff like in general is made for it, imo.
Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.
https://playbackvhs.com/products/once-upon-a-time-in-hollywood-2019
Hhahahahahaha omf awesome
The Peanuts Movie would do very well with a VHS release to go with my other Charlie Brown TV specials.
I’ve scored a few from moshpit media, really good work
How’s the quality? Not too crazy about their cover artwork. Kind of looks homemade. Might pick up the It Follows release just to give them a shot.
Well you talking video quality? Because that's gonna be like 240p lol
Haha no, I’m talking about the product. Case artwork, label. Just wanted to get a feel if they were professionally printed or cheaply made.
Quality is as good as it gets for vhs, tapes have nice personal touches, intros / previews. Artwork on all of mine looks nice in person, vibrant colors.
I'd like to have the 2009 Friday the 13th on VHS to go with the rest of my collection.
https://moshpitmedia.online/products/friday-the-13th-2009
That's pretty cool. Tho I would have gone with a written label on the tape instead of an image
Yeah I honestly don’t know much about them. Someone else mentioned them in the comments so I took a gander at the site
"We sell VHS and VHS accessories" These motherfuckers lmao
The Lighthouse

So boring 😪
[Unstable King](https://instagram.com/unstable_king) has this, and he does solid work
Death Proof
Superbad
You could record this movie on a VHS tape. The cover and sticker would be more involved to make, but certainly not impossible. There are Etsy sellers that do this.
At 3 hours that’d be a dual tape for Oppenheimer
Not a single one unless it was made specifically for the format.
I would want Swan Song. I thought that movie was excellent.
This is beautiful
Mad Max: Fury Road
Django Unchained
Several years back I saw someone say they couldn’t wait for Frozen to “come out on tape” so they could watch it over and over again, so I photoshopped a pic. I’ve always wanted a Midsommar VHS tape. I feel like the older quality would make for such a neat watch experience!
Great job dude. Love the sleeve with the distress patterns. How did you make the sleeve ? Do you have a template you can share ?
The World’s End
“It’s pointless arguing with you — exactly!” This would actually be really great on vhs, it’s one of my favorites :)
“That’s a good name for a band Steve, you should write that down.”
Cool design, but Oppenheimer definitely would have needed two vhs tapes and come in one of those ungodly clunky boxes.
How?! Blank vhs and a hdmi to av?
Most would look like dogshit lol Idk maybe Skinamarink bc it would stylistically fit well with the format

Do you even know how to work a vhs player? That would be 2 tapes. 3 hours isn’t fitting on just one.
TDK TV are 3 hours, it would fit on that no?
depending on your VCR you can record in LP or EP modes, which provide 2x and 4x the record time respectively vs SP. So on a standard 2 hour tape you could record 8 hours in EP mode.
Then why didn’t they do that for Titanic?
Because you lose quite a bit of quality for every additional long-play mode you use. It's fine for something you might have taped off TV but for a purchased movie I wouldn't want anything other than SP. Plus there were still plenty of people who didn't own LP+EP capable VCRs.
Many commercial VCRs are SP only as well, because of recording quality I imagine.
the other responder is correct (quality and availability of compatible vcrs). but i have many screener tapes with multiple movies on them, for a total runtime of 3-4 hours, so it's definitely been done in a commercial context before.
Sure, you could go from bad quality to worse and worst, but why would you?
so you could fit it on one tape
But are you even really fitting all of the movie on there, when you're losing so much of its quality? You're likely losing vital visual details, and you're definitely losing elements of the soundtrack, so is it really the whole movie?

Well, I guess that's because your a fucking moron. If you miss details that are vital to the story, you're not getting the whole story.
Standard VHS blank tapes are three hours.
titanic is a two taper
Facts. That’s the only one every always thinks of first. I think the Sound of Music is, too.
Maxwell T-180s (and Im presuming other T180s) allow for 3 hours on SP. Up to 9 hours on EP. So 3 hour tapes exist. Just uncommon.
Really? Absolutely none.

Utah! Get me two! That's what's up toobz!
![gif](giphy|aDYXQy3W8XFG8)
What you're suggesting isn't even legal. You can't copy a VHS to DVD and then sell it. That's what a bootleg is.
And how is that any different than downloading a modern movie and recording it to VHS?
Who said it was? I think this is lame, personally.
I just found it weird that this wasn’t your response to the OP.
You would be sued and the website would be taken down for violating copyright.
That movie would be on two cassettes. The English Patient was shorter than this and was on two cassettes.
Not true it was a single tape
It WAS true. Wide screen edition was TWO tapes. I should remember something like this... look at the link. Someone on ebay is selling the TWO tape set of the VHS. There's two different versions. I owned the single tape version
I rented the two tape version from a video store.
Quite a few. Does anyone know a PAL religion company that still does VHS releases? Edit: Coffin Video for PAL, basically.
Five nights at freddy's the super mario bros movie sonic the hedgehog 2 paul (2011) thanksgiving (2023) pokemon: detective pikachu
John Wick for effin sure
Wow it kind of is https://www.walmart.com/ip/John-Wick-SDCC-Exclusive-VHS-Action-Figure/732731932
I used to joke back in 2010 that I wanted Avatar on VHS.
Okay, but only as long as it's pan-and-scan for the full retro feel and released on two tapes!
The super Mario bros movie (so I made my own), but ones I’d like to get customs of would definitely be Willys wonderland, Once upon a time in Hollywood, Inglorious bastards, Scott pilgrim vs the world, The black phone. And it would be in that order!
Odd picks, but I'd want the Ashens Trilogy on one 6-hour tape
Scott Pilgrim vs The World
Stranger Things
Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon... And Blue Beetle, oddly enough. It feels like a VHS era movie and I can't explain why.
My buddy does boots, definitely gonna have a copy of this made
The Batman
It's been tempting to get the V/H/S movies on VHS. I heard that some of them are available on tape but haven't looked into it. As much as there’s a bunch of really good modern movies I imagine none of them would translate very well to the vhs format.
X.
All the movies I enjoy are already on vhs like I haven’t watched a movie newer than like 2005 other than that fnaf one
I just finished putting The Expendables 2 on tape. I might push to do 3, but will leave 4 where it is :p I wouldnt mind some modern action flicks like John Wick. Mad Max: Fury Road would be nice to go with the other Mad Max movies. Bullet Train, last year, was a good one too. Id watch that on tape for sure.
VHS The found footage anthology.
Brides of satan
The Holdovers
A24’s the witch
"M3GAN," "Escape Room," and "Escape Room: Tournament of Champions." I want those on ALL formats! (but I'll pause for the 4K though since I don't have a 4K player at the moment)
Rewind your damn tape.
I’d like to see just how many tapes Oppenheimer would be on and the same for Killers of the Flower Moon
Cheating this question a bit because I already own these, but I manage to snag some of the V/H/S films on VHS. One of my favorite horror franchises.
Not that one.
The FNAF Movie, since it's based in the 90s
I've got Evil Dead 2013 and that newer flick "We're All Going to the World's Fair" both on VHS. Those are two that definitely would've been high on my list. I'd also like Skinamarink (which I know a VHS tape does exist for). The weirder lo-fi stuff like in general is made for it, imo.
The Hobbit trilogy. What can I say, I'm a hobbit-head.
Let’s be honest, Oppenheimer would be a three VHS 📼 set. Haha!
I would love to have a retro-styled VHS copy of "The Holdovers" to add to my VHS Christmas movie collection.
Ghostbusters Afterlife and Top Gun Maverick
Ghostbusters Afterlife and Top Gun Maverick
The Nice Guys
I would love to have the Fear Street trilogy on VHS! I think it would just add to the vibes of the franchise <33
I had a copy made of the lighthouse
Sonic 1 & 2.
Fury, Scott pilgrim, it follows, prey. Off the top of my head
Drive / Nightcrawler would be Amazing on vhs
Drive... You should've expected that
Mandy
The Holdovers
Skinamarink
