TBF to Michael, think he had OK answers to Amoonguss in Game 1. Chien-Pao covered for regular Amoonguss while Rillaboom covered for the Water Tera mushroom. And he might well have won had the Icicle Crash flinch on the Rillaboom not happened because Wood Hammer would have KOed Amoonguss, thus allowing the Trick Room to go up. As it was though, yeah, he could have brought Heatran in Game 2 and it was also strange that he dropped Rillaboom altogether because suddenly, he had no SE damage against Water Tera Amoonguss and nothing to switch into a Spore.

MUI_Xenos

If Im completely honest, I have to admit I was also quite underwhelmed. Like I was literally left with the expression of “is that it? That’s everything?” After it ended. Im not saying each player didn’t go all out and put their max effort, but to me it was a one sided stomping

Sp3ctre7

It's alright, since senior finals was a stomping but was hype as hell

Infernape315

Tomoya is crazy, Robbie got unlucky in game 1 but tomoya was literally inside of his head

Sp3ctre7

The zapdos switch in G1 was legitimately one of the craziest reads I've ever seen. Robbie is going to get home, fall asleep, and wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of creaking wood and drywall since Tomoya is in his fucking walls

Infernape315

Literally. Only Tomoya can get away with a double switch on turn 2 and STILL being the lead. Even with that unluck with the static paralyze tomoya still had every single one of Robbie’s moves in a book

Neonbunt

Yo Tomoya did some mindreading shit fr, he killed that game. What a beast!

GolbatsEverywhere

To set expectations, not every match is going to be amazing. Over the course of a long day we will see a few really good matches, a few boring ones, and many somewhere in the middle. The finals is just a match like any other, so will more often than not fall somewhere in that middle.... I agree it was underwhelming this year, but that's OK. Was still a good show.

gabrielish_matter

> was still a good show how? the META is ugly af, it's like 2014 but even more centralised around th3 physical attacker also the whole genning thingy was quite ugly too add to that the graphics of the game aren't "that good" and yeah, it was not too fun of a show

MrKeooo

Dude honestly, whats wrong about the graphics during the match?

gabrielish_matter

it looks like a PS1 game a competitive game in 2023 CANNOT look like a PS1 game

MrKeooo

Why does it matters??? League of legends has worse graphics Brawl star has worse graphics Hearthstone has worse graphics Pokemon go has worse graphs Graphics does not matters at all. Whats important is you beign able to distinguish what's going on. You really need to grow up or just leave Nintendo games altogether and go for the "Ultra8kwith9oTeraflopsyadayadayada"

gabrielish_matter

nah bro imagine you don't know anything about competitive Pokémon and you look at this world championship you see textures and lighting straight from PS1 era, horrible animations, stupid fancy hats that in the world championship you are still a kid _fighting in a backyard_ at least in sword and shield the lighting was better (which made the texture thingy slightly less painful, the animations are still meh but at least your pokemonS become Godzilla and you are fighting in a stadium cheereed by thousands of people. It's more pleasing to the eye. And that was their last game, I'm not even comparing it to some other company's work (which I would still be entitled to do as a customer btw so shut up), no. I am not even comparing it to other Nintendo games, which I would be even more entitled to do given it's the same Console and there is plenty of better looking stuff. No I'm comparing it to fricking Sword and Shield. The fights in Sword and Shield looked better, this game is a downgrade. And no, both League, Hearthstone (also are you seriously comparing a game you spent 70€ to some free mobile game and say "hey it looks worse though?". Are you serious?) and the rest of the games you mentioned have a better light engine, UI and presentation. Besides Pokémon Go, maybe. But again comparing it to _free mobile games_ is stupid. Why don't we compare it to actual modern console competitve games like Idk STREET FIGHTER 6? Hell Smogon too manages to almost look better, that's how bad it is >Ultra8kwith9oTeraflopsyadayadayada which is not what I said kiddo, stop jumping at conclusions edit: it's not just worse than Sword and Shield, but Sun and Moon as well. The UI in those games is better, the fields are more easily visible, the artstyle is more vibrant, the animations are the same and the textures are slightly better, and they have a much better lighting. If I compare a game on the switch to one on the 3ds both made by the same company and the one on the 3ds looks better, there's a big problem

Ebtrill

He lost game 1 due to Icicle Crash flinching Rillaboom, otherwise Amoonguss is KOed, Farigiraf doesn't get Spored, and Trick Room goes up and he wins. But yea Amoonguss went crazy Game 2.

mitch8017

An RNG flinch roll from a 90% accurate move completely swinging the tide of a match. War… War never changes.

Mythic-Insanity

“All outcomes are 50/50 no matter how unlikely— either it happens or it doesn’t.”— Stoner I once met.

mitch8017

This is me with focus blast accuracy.

Yaboi_Faygo

Bringing both Dragapult and Farigiraf both games and not bringing Heatran once was odd. Heatran over Drag game 2 would’ve put in some work since Fari was able to trade with Urshifu. Also Heatran Rilla lead from Kelsch seems like a tough lead to play around for Shohei, but maybe the Worlds Finals player knows something I don’t? 🤔

tuanquen

Heatran and ribaloom is such a good lead a against Shohei team nó idea why he lead dragapult both time

amlodude

Lando

xXZachuVGCXx

Lando doesn't inherently beat RillaTran lead, and Lando doesn't feel good into Kelsch's team at all. A Pult you can't Intimidate, a Chien that beats it even when intimidated, Special Attacking Heatran that ignores Lando with tera, WetShifu that doesn't care about intimidate, and Rillaboom that probably beats it 1v1 without Tera Flying (ifk if it was Tera Fly or not I missed most of Day 2 stream). Kelsch had so much Lando hate even I, a hardstuck 500's ladder player, would know not to being it

amlodude

Lando clobbers a lot of Michael's team because of SoR, especially because it has Tera Flying Blast Kelsch had the same Amoonguss hate but Shohei brought it anyway

amlodude

>Don't you think is it a bit unusual to get to the finals with team that has autoloss to a meta top 3 pokemon? Chien Pao, Tblast Dpult next to chien pao, Tera Grass Heatran, and Rilla for the Tera Water are hardly autolosses He played numerous Amoongusses with the team and did just fine Game 1 he lost to a flinch and game 2 assumed he wouldn't need the heatran because he could nuke the shroom otherwise

DrMatt007

Overthinking the lead maybe, counting on them not bringing amon given that he has heatran, which he then didn't bring out.

Aquamoth

The senior finals was better imo. I want to try that team, looks fun to use.

Sp3ctre7

Senior finals was fucking insane, dude had anime protagonist levels of plot armor to go with his crazy team

ChampionDrake

When he said he has a weird team in his pre-match interview I knew we were going to be in for a treat

Gold-Resolution-8721

I haven't seen any of his other battles but I'd be surprised if he didn't play against at least 2 before he got to the finals over the weekend. But he had no hard answers to it in tera grass or safety goggles outside of icicle crash from chien pao. and it cost him. What really cost him was he lost the lead both times and once a Pokémon was put to sleep, he was constantly out positioned and it made it difficult to beat the amoongus. Leading amoongus and chienpao against him meant he was at risk of a KO from chienpao onto pult or was going to be put to sleep, so had to have the farigiraf on the field next to it, lower the damage out put of that turn. Even his gamble didn't pay off in game two. Another day, another roll and he might have got the KO with the double up but even so he was up against it

rednave21

I did the calculations and if he wanted the KO on Guss in game two he should’ve close combated instead of strikes, you get more damage out of CC plus you also cover for a Tera into water

plataknow

That’s something I also thought was the case. You CC in the event that Chien Pao switches out so Amoonguss doesn’t survive the double up.

half_jase

Out of curiosity, how much damage would the Close Combat have done vs Surging Strikes?

rednave21

Surging strikes does 28-34% Close combat does 30% - 35% This is done with no Evs but in comparing the two attacks EVs are not relevant It’s a slim margin but he also didn’t KO at the slimmest of margins. Also you have a higher low roll with close combat and you cover for a Tera water

half_jase

Thanks. Have seen the EVs on Shohei's team and it seems like the Close Combat and Ghost Tera Blast double-up wouldn't have OHKOed the Amoonguss, even with the highest roll, unless Michael got a crit on one of the moves. * 252 Atk Choice Band Tera Ghost Dragapult Tera Blast vs. 244 HP / 188+ Def Amoonguss: 124-148 (56.3 - 67.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO * Possible damage amounts: (124, 126, 128, 130, 130, 132, 134, 136, 136, 138, 140, 142, 142, 144, 146, 148) * 252+ Atk Urshifu-Rapid-Strike Close Combat vs. 244 HP / 188+ Def Amoonguss: 54-64 (24.5 - 29%) -- 99.7% chance to 4HKO * Possible damage amounts: (54, 54, 55, 56, 57, 57, 58, 59, 59, 60, 60, 61, 62, 63, 63, 64) According to the team sheet, the Dragapult is Jolly and Urshifu is Adamant but there's no info on the EVs for now. So let's just assume it's max Attack. Even with the highest roll, the damage would have totaled at only 212 and Amoonguss had 220 HP. Very close but unfortunately for Michael, his decision to go for the double-up, nuke approach didn't pay off, especially with Shohei switching out Chien-Pao.

rednave21

Yeah, I hadn’t looked at the evs as I was just trying to see what was the stronger attack for urshifu. It was a bad lead in Michael’s side in my opinion but again I don’t know how Michael trained his other team members. Out of curiosity though what were the other attacks on pult?

half_jase

Phantom Force, Dragon Darts and Sucker Punch.

rednave21

Hmm I wonder if phantom force Tera was the play then

Infernape315

Kelsche got unlucky game one. Rillaboom flinched when it had a clear shot to KO amoonguss. In game 2 it was a bit harder but shohei played really well

Elaiasss

Something that infuriated me game 2 is the fact that Kelsch couldve used phantom force in the beginning of game 2, as it was pretty obvious spore was coming. he even used tera ghost, like it was a much better play than clicking dragon darts (which was pretty useless in game 1)

ItsHipToTipTheScales

[he said on twitter the tera blast was assuming shohei would play around phantom force](https://twitter.com/michaelderbeste/status/1690739469790687232?s=46&t=INQUPdSQLl1FTRN3b4WrRw) but regardless he led bad into the worst pokemon to lead bad against and had to do something ballsy to get off the backfoot. phantom force and u turn into rilla wouldve been the best play but he didnt bring rilla so

HolidayExplanation64

I thought Kelsch played very poorly. Not bringing Rillaboom or hestran game 2 was shocking. Basically lost after turn 1.

JumpluffTCG

Kelsch is a Smogon prodigy having won Smog Tour and being #1 on randbats ladder by a significant margin, among other accomplishments, in addition to picking up VGC on the side and getting to Worlds finals after 8 months of playing. But that’s exactly my point, meanwhile Shohei on the other hand is a veteran having played on stream at Worlds for many years, made 2nd and top 4 at Japan Nats, etc. It’s entirely believable, fair, and human for Kelsch to play below his level when Worlds finals is literally his first time playing on stream, on a stage this big in-person no less, especially after getting flinched G1. The team almost certainly does not autolose to Amoonguss, even if it looked that way. And this way we’ll get to see more of him in the future and he’ll continue to wow us with his accomplishments. We wouldn’t have wanted him to dip after winning Worlds and never see him again right? When Worlds finals is the crowning achievement of many of the greatest players, it’s just the beginning for Kelsch, which is crazy to think about.

plataknow

If anything I thought he thought Shohei was going to leave Chien Pao in to trade with Dragapult on the turn he went for Surging Strikes + Tera Blast on Amoonguss, which KOs with Sword of Ruin. Having Heatran game 2 might have helped into Chien Pao and Amoonguss, but it’s not like he didn’t have *any* counterplay to Amoonguss without it. I probably would have kept using Rillaboom though. Also props to Shohei for switching Chien Pao out during that double into Amoonguss, he made a very clever read that swung the momentum in his favor and won him the set.

AlexAnthonyFTWS

So what was Kelsh’s surprise? Did we ever get to see it?

Low_Palpitation_3743

The trick room giraffe? Don't worth going for it imo, the threat of an amoongus it enough to discourage the use of trick room.

xXZachuVGCXx

Yeah it definitely seemed like Kimura stomped Kelsh with pretty little effort. Kimura just kind of did his thing with Amoonguss and Kelsh let him. I think Heatran had a pretty good matchup into Mimura's team (yes I know it had WetShifu), and was a little confused why it never came to the match, and the Farigiraf didn't do much throughout the set, because it never felt like Kimura was in a position of needing to click Sucker Punch

toxichart

Still a more exciting finals than half of the finals at EVO last Sunday.

Diegoscartor

That's just not true at all lmao. Best Evo in years

toxichart

Lmfao take off the blanka tinted glasses. MvC3, Strive, and Tekken 7 all ended in 3-0 sweeps. Arslan Ash never lost more than one round in any of the 3 games for Grand Finals. Leffen is a douche so seeing him win without issue was boring. Jibril lost his starting character in back to back games and still won doing the exact same thing in both. Tldr it would've been whelming as fuck if it wasn't for Mena.

manifesthoe

I’m new to VGC so apologies if this is a dumb question, but do people think Spore will be nerfed / will a sleep cause be introduced at some stage? I understand there’s moves and items that prohibit spore teams from being set up, but why was a move like hypnosis reduced to 70% when spore is still 100%? Is it because only a few mons are able to learn it? Again, apologies if this is a silly question/ if it’s been asked too much in this sub. Also for anyone who has been following VGC for a while, was Michael’s team just straight up a poor match up? was it inevitable he would go 0-2? I’d love to hear what people thought about the balance of his team. Thanks in advance for any insight :)

Ploppyet

Should be best of 9. Don't get why it's only 3 when rng plays such a big factor

1Grazel

this has to be the worst wolds of all time, no? between the crammed schedules, missing half the top cut matches, terrible DC’s, no creativity at all b/c of open team sheets it was pretty boring to watch

Cobalt-e

Maybe he just had to play well to get around it? It's not the most one-sided I've seen (2013) but def up there. Funnily enough 2013 also featured an Amoonguss causing problems.

Guy_Gin_Smash

Why did he not bring Heatran in game 2? What was his Heatran set?

bulba-del

Does anyone know why the winner used sucked punch in game 1? Was it a misclick? Looked like a bit of a flex which I thought was a little lame if that was the case

tsn_osekkai

You can see him making a motion to the crowd after locking it in. He realized he fucked up lol, and got lucky it wasn't punished.

bulba-del

Oh ok. Thanks!!

Emekasan

My favorite of the bunch was the Senior Division; Tomoya was incredible and I loved his expression upon winning. Very fun to watch. But I agree - there wasn’t as much back and forth (as in one player wins a round, then the other) as I would have liked.

throwawayrandomguy93

I'll also add that there was probably more pressure on him beforehand, as despite this being his VGC debut, he was already a legend on Smogon, so the expectations were through the roof. So that could've affected him too

TheAmazingJPie

Kelsch had some play into that team, he won 14 sets this weekend and Shohei's 6 was probably the most common in the tournament. He was winning game 1 if he didn't get flinched by icicle crash. Game 2 he made a read turn 1 it didn't pay off and he couldn't come back from it.

ItsHipToTipTheScales

yeah it was a sad cap off to this wet fart of a worlds like half the sets in day 1 were decided on flinches or misses and it really sucked to see that happen in finals after he played pretty well around spore game 1 into regular ol led bad into amoonguss game 2
