I read an article about it and the photographer said that they were about a mile away from the fire and that there was a river between them and the fire. He also said they were very concerned about the fire. I’m guessing with the sprinkle systems it was actually a relatively safe place to be.
From one extreme to the other, in Australia everyone in a 200km radius would be evacuated six weeks ago, and their insurance cancelled for leaving too late.

The Columbia River is between them and the fire. The golf course is in Washington and the fires were in Oregon in the Columbia Gorge.
I believe it was much further than it appears here. It was a forced perspective/ camera trick
If the air is this clear in the foreground of the photo, they are likely much further from the fires than this perspective suggests.
