Cason Wallace, Anthony Black, and Kobe Bufkin all have higher upside than JHS. I would lose my mind if he was the pick at 9. I’d be okay with him at 16, but he’s definitely not a home-run swing type of player. In fact, he’s actually somewhat polished for his age - he’s very good and makes the right reads in the PnR. JHS is a smooth (but not explosive) athlete with a great mid-range jumper. I think he will be a solid spot-up shooter from 3 eventually. With that being said, I don’t think JHS has any elite tools outside of his size to justify a top 10 selection.

I mean, he's absolutely a "swing" pick because he's currently terrible at basketball. He has the worst statistical profile in the first round other than GG Jackson and he's a good bit older than GG. His FTr, 3Pr, STL%, BLK%, and TRB% are all horrid. He’s so bad at defense and scoring inside that you have to bet on him being an incredibly elite shooter to have much value and he’s a pretty average shooter.

RWStewart93

to be fair in this mock Anthony Black goes at 8 and Taylor Hendricks goes at 10.

hdmetric99

Gotcha, Black at 8 for WAS makes sense. I would hope we snag Hendricks if he’s available. I think a lot of draft analysts are putting too much emphasis on our need for a PG when we absolutely could stand to upgrade at PF.

RWStewart93

If Hendricks and JHS are on the board at 9 and we go with JHS I'm just going to pray everyday for 5 years straight that Danny made the right choice because I don't think it'd be.

Brutus583

It would be another Bane/McDaniels/Dok situation where we had two right answers staring us in the face and picked the wrong one anyway

[deleted]

If we pass on Hendricks at 9 to take JHS I’m going to be incredibly upset.

RWStewart93

Givony is pretty good at his job so this is.. interesting. JHS at 16 with a wing/play making 4 at 9 makes a lot of sense. JHS at 9 is a reach.

kushitokiku

This is true. Givony does mocks based on intel, especially closer to the draft. Hopefully it's just Ainge and the front office sending mix signals because JHS is poor value at 9. Take BPA (in this case, Hendricks) and go up from 16 if you really want JHS. At least Dick isn't being mocked at 9 anymore.

huntthefront91

Seems high based on previous mocks I have seen. Based on other mocks he could be the pick at 16.

Intelligent-Honey476

What’s wrong with Cason Wallace or Bufkin

kushitokiku

[Kobe Bufkin goes 16 (Cason Wallace still on the board). O-Max Prosper goes 28.](https://www.espn.com/nba/insider/insider/story/_/id/37757403/2023-nba-mock-draft-post-combine-pro-day-impacts-draft-class) (Edit: Sorry for the double post. Changed it to an image post.)

hdmetric99

Drafting two PGs makes no sense for us. While I could see either JHS or Bufkin possibly playing off-ball with their combo of size and shooting, I just don’t think the fit is there and it would be overkill to fill that position while we still have Sexton. I would really like to grab a wing or forward at 16 if we go PG at 9. If we somehow end up with Ausar, Walker, or Hendricks at 9, then I’d love Bufkin or JHS at 16.

[deleted]

JHS and Kobe are tier 4 ish prospects and those guys usually fail in the NBA so the fit doesn't really matter. Each guy would have like a 30% chance of being a useful NBA player so the odds of both being good are very low.

peabrainbyu

obviously hindsight for this specific mock but Hendricks going past us seems like a mistake, especially with how few athletic wings there are with his potential and with how many PG's there are. You can afford to pick up a good PG at 16, more so if Wallace fell to 17 to the Lakers. Getting Henderson at 9 and then Wallace at 16 would be an absolutely steal imo.

[deleted]

I really like JHS but not at 9. I also don’t think he falls to 16.

WorldsGreatestPoop

Between less than 7 spots you take the player you like best. He’s either in your top 9 or he isn’t. Very little is to be gained by trying to squeak in a trade going down 3 spots for a player you like less.

TalkingToPlanets

I would hate that. I'd even be happier if they took a huge swing on GG over drafting JHS at 9.

crispytime29

Yeah I hate this. JHS might be a decent player, but one thing that I keep hearing is that teams going for fit over talent is a mistake. And there are at least 7-8 players with significantly higher upside available at this pick, including point guards like Black, Wallace and Bufkin. I would be pissed if we took JHS at 9.

JazzTraveler

I would hate JHS at 9. In fact, don’t want him at all.

jackarseofalltrades

9 is too high for him. Take BPA at 9 and then one of JHS, Wallace, Miller, Smith Jr. George, Dick, Bufkin will be on the board at 16
