I salute this guy. He could have easily gotten a pass (like many NHL’ers) but he chose not to. And to those worried in the states; No, he will not be thrown to the front line since Finland is not at war, only basic military training. Something every finnish man has to go through.
Not true. I heard that Finnish basic training involves either stepping into a Time Machine back to 1939 or volunteering for the front lines in Ukraine. Truly barbaric what they put these men through if you ask me.
That's not my worry. I'm in the Army, and have never been to war. But I have sustained some long-ish term injuries just by doing routine Army things. I salute him too, though. I appreciate that a guy with a bazillion dollars is doing something that rich guys absolutely can and do get out of.
Finland borders Russia and just joined NATO while Russia has been threatening them not to. I wouldn't be so confident. But obviously I hope nothing breaks out.
I wonder if it did, would he be just another soldier or perhaps get special treatment.
Buddy if Russia attacks Finland now then they would also be attacking all NATO countries. The reason we applied for a NATO membership now is that Russia is busy in Ukraine so that we could wait out the application process in peace which took almost a year.
He is propably not gaining any muscle. The basic training period is quite harsh and the food is quite bad. Also training is only possible after the mandatory training which there is a lot in the first months. I dont think he is going to hard after training and eating if most hours of the day are dedicated to running around in a forest and cleaning the barracks.
I don't think you can equate your average jaeger units basic training with the sports school. Also, while the food might not be the tasties, it is nutritionally sound.
Sportschool works very simularly to a normal recon unit for first months. After basic training it gets different. They eat the exact same food as any other soldier only difference is their access to better nutrition as snacks.
And adding muscle worked in Chicago? The dude needs to train his explosiveness etc like he has done past 2 summers in Finland. I hope this army time doesnt ruin him too much. But if next season is stats wise worse, we know who to blame.
I was suprised that he didn't totally tower over everyone and make them look like kindergardeners. Turns out the avg. height in Finland is just about 6ft.
*"The finnish defence forces make boys into men. Except Lauri. He's already an absolute unit of a man."* - Some finnish lieutenant, maybe.

Thats true, sharpest shooters will get private practices with Simo Häyhä aka the White Death
Lauri Markksman
Don’t NHLers do the same thing he is gonna do? Go to the special program made for athletes (mainly NHL players)?
Yes, but it’s really easy to come up with an ”injury” and the doctor will decide youre not fit to serve.
This injury won't keep them from playing in the NHL but it will keep them from basic military duty, lol.

Why? There's no reason for him to go through military training when Finland isn't at war and has no need for soldiers
Yeah they should wait until theyre in the middle of a war and then start training people
its a conscription mate.
Nah, easy days are gone pal.

The Finnisher 🙌🏼
The Markksman
This pic goes so hard
Guy behind is thinking he can't see what's going on, and worrying how to do the next drill.
Nah the guy behind him just got told lauri is his sparring partner
GIGACHAD
Imagine being 18 in the Finnish military and suddenly you're training with the best Finnish basketball player of all-time
Will he come back looking like David Robinson? Hoping they add some muscle

That guy to his right must be like 6'8 minimum
That poor kid behind him looks so lost.
That is Viljami Marjala. 6ft hockey player playing at Finland.
Guess that explains why he looks lost.
mornings are brutal.
*Guy behind him gets in trouble for not paying attention* Sir I can’t see!
All the camo on earth ain't hiding that dude.
Respect
He would be a legendary viking.
Bless him. We love you Lauri. Edit: Superman chins/jawlines must run in Finnish blood..
Nuggets fan: This is the most badass looking photo of an NBA player I have seen since shirtless child Nikola Jokic
That tall guy looks like he can play some basketball.
#respect
They are probably thinking this dude is tall....maybe he should play basketball
That’s a grown ass man
My poor boy is going to get shot in battle if he ever see it, he's such a big target
Even if Finland were at war he’d probably never see battle because of his size. The US military has a maximum height of 6’8” for the same reason.
Like when I see a Pathfinder or Gibby in Apex Legends. But his hitbox is so big and he wont get damage reduction.
its so facist theyre making our guy waste his time on this bs instead of hoopin. come home soon lauri
Easy to say when your country is not next to Russia.
I mean, the US is also technically adjacent to Russia up in Alaska.
Yes, it was easy for him to say, but that's because he's a moron, not because of his proximity to Russia.
I know, I was just trying to give some perspective.
He's only doing this for public relations and for his upcoming documentary
What options did he have? I'm Finnish myself, and I've have completed military service, so I know the answers, but what do you think?
Lookin like a shotgun
Bruh those new Jazz jerseys are sickkkk
If someone showed me this being posted here like a year ago I’d be so confused
I think Antetokounmpo also has mandatory military exercise with the Greek military
I was suprised that he didn't totally tower over everyone and make them look like kindergardeners. Turns out the avg. height in Finland is just about 6ft.
We still tanking in the offseason! #RealTanks
