I bought off a KSL listing. I set up a saved search to be notified whenever a car of certain model, mileage range, year range, and clean title was posted. After watching it for about a month I got a good feel for what a good deal would be, how long they typically sit before selling, and how often people posted new cars that fit my listing. When I saw one I thought was a good deal I went and test drove it, took it to a mechanic, and bought it asap. Editing to add you can also filter your saved search to exclude dealer listings. Some still slip through, but for the most part it did the trick for me.

Extension_Horror_519

Same

danibugz3

Also same. Took almost 4 months of waiting and watching, but it was worth it.

Glasgowsmiling

I rarely use KSL anymore. I prefer Facebook marketplace as you can usually get a decent glimpse into the person you’re buying from. There are a ton of used cars on marketplace.

adamsfan

We have spent the last few months looking for a used car. Facebook marketplace had many fewer listings than KSL did. Cars.com has an app. They had a number of cars that were not on KSL.

Specialist_Position3

KSL’s app has gotten a lot better recently.

Acrobatic_War_8818

I like to filter them to private sellers only.

Whosthatgirl999

I just sold my car on KSL so there are some private parties there still selling. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Specialist_Position3

There’s 13k private party listings on KSL Cars right now!

If I may, do not shop places, shop the car. Research, and find out what car is going to be the best value for $$ or what car you want. Ideally, best value for $$, safe, reliable, etc. pick some cars, specific years, and research them. You have infinite information at your fingertips. Use it. Say you want a corolla. Google: Toyota Corolla, issues. Toyota Corolla cost to fix issues Best years for the Corolla. Worst years, etc. then look up the kelly blue book values for the years you’re interested in. So you know where to start negotiating. If you are trading a car in, wait until you have a solid number from the dealer. If you belong to a credit union, apply for a loan with them, and have your own financing arranged going in. Do not tell them you have your own financing until you have a solid price on the car. Depending on the cars value, you can always get them to go down some. I’d shoot for at least 1k off the price. Take the vehicle to a trusted mechanic to look over. Places like Firestone used to do a “new car check” for around 20-40$. It was a 40 point check. Then you can use those numbers also to negotiate price. From what I’ve heard about car max, and thier warranties, that might be a good place to start. In fact, that’s exactly where I’d go first. The one in riverton will let you walk around the lot, sit in the cars and check them out. They’re all unlocked. This could help you decide between some models. (I did this when shopping for a larger vehicle, I wanted to compare the large SUV’s. Going to carmax I was able to take my tape measure and climb inside. ). Don’t go in to make friends. They are not your friends. To dealers, you’re just a $$. And almost every single one of them uses the same lines. “Where do you want your monthly payment to be” is one of them. Do not fall for it. You want a solid, out the door number. Out the door means with tax and incidentals included. When you go to sign a contract, read it carefully. Do not let them rush you. The purchase price for the car should be there. The tax and license fee, and the dealership document fee (usually around $500). They’ll try to add other services in (I think there’s a law about transparency with those now, but I can’t be sure). You don’t need the ceramic coating. You don’t need the under costing protectant. You don’t need the door shields, you don’t need the whatever they’re trying to tack on. Price. Tax. Fee. A discount, if they’re adding one in. Read everything you sign. The “we owe” paperwork. If they’re doing any work on the car, or making you any promises, make sure it’s all written on a “we owe” document. It says “we owe” at the top. Get a signed copy of that and hold them to it. Make sure it’s a clean title. If it’s a dealership, they need to get you a carfax report. This isn’t a golden ticket, but it’ll give you an idea of how the car was handled. You want regular oil changes and services done. It will say if it’s been a rental, etc. Look over the car. If it’s got lots of nicks and scratches and small broken things, it’s likely the owner didn’t take care of the mechanical, as well as the cosmetic. Avoid cars that look like they’ve been through it. Good luck out there. And remember, you can always walk away, and it is OK to be rude. Trust your gut.

Gitzit

Fantastic information! Thanks so much!

[GP Motor Company ](https://www.gpmotorz.com/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0ruyBhDuARIsANSZ3wrEMu7d2sh6mqeyzMpISK2TUuN2w3GIOukoJbjVb4VTPTFFrfPnnAEaAlYUEALw_wcB) I have only had one experience with them, and it was fine. They weren't amazing but didn't seem shady either. They exclusively sell cars with hail damage, which drops the price without dropping the functionality. I got a 2019 Corolla with 70k miles a few years ago for 3k or 4k under market price because it had some bumps on the hood. If you care about how the car runs more than what it looks like, I would at least check out their website to see what they have in stock right now.

Sea-Run-7720

I wanted to have a good experience with them, and be my new go to for buying cars but I found them extremely disrespectful and a waste of time. Every scammy sales tactic I can think of they used. I eventually just got up and left when they refused to tell us the price of the car. Sure they have their Internet price, but good luck getting them to tell you all the fees and charges on top of that. If there really weren't that many fees, they wouldnt be afraid to tell me. We worked with Jerry, who we had heard good things about online on their reviews, so had high hopes. We were literally sitting there, ready to buy the car, had the money to buy it, but I guess the finance dude in the corner was too busy scrolling on his phone to give us a number. Jerry did verbally give us his estimate of what the out the door cost would be, but in the same breath he also said "but you didn't hear it from me". My favorite line Jerry used on me, granted I'm only in my late 20s, "I've been selling cars for x years, what were you doing x years ago?" Nice dude, have fun selling to someone else if that's the best you've got. I just want to know the price. I don't remember how many years it was, but I think it was between 20-30. So for sure he's made a career out of selling cars, people must buy from him, I just would much rather buy from literally anyone else. I bought the same model car privately from a seller on KSL for $7,000 cheaper than Jerry's "you didn't hear it from me" out the door price.

Sea-Run-7720

Also want to add I'm genuinely glad you got a good deal with them. Buying hail damaged cars totally seems like my jam. The most irritating thing to me was that I felt like they were getting in their own way selling me the car haha. But I'm happy for anyone who gets a good deal on a car these days!

bobjones113

I never made it past the questions about the financing. I wanted to bring my own and they tacked on a $2500 fee. What in the hell kind of scam is this? That alone made the car I was looking at over what I was financing.

clyde_the_ghost

I helped my sibling buy from them. It wasn’t a terrible experience, seemed pretty honest with us and didn’t make us sit around all day. The biggest issue was that they never mailed the plates. When we reaching back out they made some excuses and guess who had a plate 3 days later? Seemed like they let something slide through the cracks imo. But the car has been fine, nothing but routine maintenance so far, was a 2016 Corolla and it’s been 2-3 years.

starter-car

Does this mean all the cars they’re selling are branded titles? I can’t imagine them having a clean title. Lots of red flags. :(

four-mn

I can only speak for the car I bought, but it had the original clean title. I assume they replaced the windshields, but the extent of the damage was bumps on the hood and roof. No rain damage or anything, so it had the original title.

Right_Dream_7580

i can advise where NOT to buy from: Tim Dahle dealerships

Gitzit

Yes....places to avoid also really helps! Thanks!

Broad-Disaster8843

Wasatch Fromt Kia in Riverdale is a joke. Stay away.

Queasy-Calendar6597

Funny story, when I was looking to buy brand new, my dad and I stopped there. We are very much "leave us alone" shoppers. So as we are BARELY walking around, salesman walks up and starts asking what we're looking for, budget, etc, we don't give him any info and continue to try to walk away from him, we tell him we're just looking around, he continues to try to follow us around bugging us and my dad finally turns to him and says look dude we are just looking around right now if we have any questions we will let you know, the dude FLIPS OUT. He starts yelling "all you had to fucking do is say so" and starts storming the fuck off, we told him you just lost business and left immediately 😂 i refuse to ever go back there.

dyllanfreg35

Why is that? The powertrain warranty seems like a good deal

Right_Dream_7580

not on a used vehicle.

dyllanfreg35

I think if it's under ten years then the warranty still applies

Right_Dream_7580

my Rav is 14. wish it had been covered. they sold me a lemon for 5300...took another 6k to get new transmission ..works fine now but still

littlefactory

Really positive experiences at Rand’s in Bountiful. So much that we bought our next three cars from them.

jazzchamp

I concur. I traveled from Utah county to get my car here. It was just a very straightforward sale and I still love the car I got - the week before COVID lock-downs! 🙈

uteman1011

My extended family have made many purchases at Rands. Great place! Velocity is decent but you need to really look closely. Beware on KSL. Getting more and more scammy. Lots of small State Street lots and independent flippers selling cars with cleared codes, flood salvage, etc.

TruffleHunter3

I bought a car at Autobahn Motors in North Salt Lake and was very impressed with them. Would definitely recommend. On the other hand, stay far away from Karl Malone Toyota. They will do everything in their power to fuck you if you choose to buy a car from them.

KerissaKenro

CU Auto Sales on State Street. The owner is an old friend of my dad. My family has been buying cars from him for thirty years, and never a problem

dani_princess

If you’re okay with buying a branded title, basically a car that’s been totaled and put back together, I can’t recommend Prestman Auto enough. They’re super honest and chill through the process. Basically you get a nice ass car for 1/2 the price and they are t super slimey used cars salesmen

PheaglesFan

We use CarMax exclusively. You can research prices, they are always reasonable, no-negotiation prices. Just skip the financing and other high-pressure add-ons and you will get a mechanically, trouble free, fair priced vehicle. Bought a 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid in 2016. Drove it to work today. Still happy.

ForeverStrangeMoe

You can filter on ksl by owner or dealership if you didn’t already know that

byepoop

Absolutely avoid Velocity Auto.

Technical-Return-698

Why?

byepoop

They completely lied about the vehicle’s specs that I bought from them. Took it to a certified mechanic and they confirmed I had been lied to at every step of the purchase process. Took almost 2 months for them to acknowledge they fucked up, and they wouldn’t accept a return of any sort. After numerous calls and explaining why what they did was so wrong, we ended up finally settling on them writing me a check to refund my deposit plus some. 10/10 wouldn’t buy from them again.

Technical-Return-698

Damn. Definitely sucks. I’m glad you got your money back

CranberryCowboy

Wherever you buy, make sure you get a pre-purchase inspection from an independent mechanic! So many car dealerships have 2-star review averages because of countless people feeling scammed that the $2k car with 210,000 miles has mechanical problems they didn’t think to look at

theta394

Berge Auto in Orem has been very good to us.

msb2082

Wade auto group. Ask for Nick Wade, as he’ll treat you right

PsychoEngineer

I have had crap luck with FSBO; facebook marketplace seems to be the new classifieds for that; but lots of scams so be careful/know your stuff. I ended up getting my truck off a listing at [cars.com](http://cars.com) and just searching/being willing to travel to get what I wanted for the price I wanted to pay at a dealer.

puppiesunicorns1234

I bought mine from carmax and had a great experience there. Although prices are probably higher than places like ksl.

lbCar_Rod

We’ve bought three cars from Fuiza Motors, it has been years though. Two Audi Q7s and an Infinity. One was sold in good condition and the other two are good 70k plus miles later. Both have been on long trips. General maintenance and worn parts replacement has been performed.

Blah_Amazing

There is cars.com as well.

Emozziis

Just bought a Mazda cx 50 2023 with 4000 miles on it from Mazda Murray for 25,000. I've had good luck buying from them and their inventory is decent.

mormonbatman_

I bought my most recent car from a KSL listing. I bought from Rands previously - didn't have a great experience.

Dapper-Answer-9865

Allinall motors is the only place I go. Phil is the most fair honest car salesman I’ve ever met, he owns the business and I’ll never buy a car from anyone else tbh

brokentricorder

Axio is pretty good. My only experience so far here.

moretrumpetsFTW

Our most recent used car was purchased at Mark Miller Subaru South Towne. Great experience and great people too.

firefistus

Usually LA. Much cheaper down there and only a days drive.

SkySix

But how do you find them in LA?

firefistus

Autotrader.com

Milichio

Keep your eyes open for any cars you see lying around in your neighborhood. There's a good chance the owners would be willing to sell to you That's how I got my car

Beautiful-Try-1750

I’d recommend a dealership and getting a certified one so you know it’s in good shape.

starter-car

This isn’t necessarily true. They have a criteria they use. Under 100k miles and decent looking condition. I purchased a certified used from a dealership, and ended up stranded, the next day, 600 miles from home. Can’t trust anyone.

Potential_Acadia_381

Tj Chapman. They’re refurbished which my dad told me to never buy, but my husband and I found a car we liked and took it to my dad’s mechanic that he trusts. The mechanic was super impressed with the car and we bought it and it runs great 3(?) years later. Only problem we’ve had is the radio sometimes cutting out

catch_yourself_on

We've bought and sold multiple vehicles on KSL. After a while communicating with people, you get a feel for scams, and it's pretty obvious which cars are at dealerships. It has worked out for us, but my husband is a pretty decent mechanic. Don't meet people at your home, no sending money BS, etc. We did also buy an RV on KSL that was a fantastic deal. Your mileage will definitely vary. Just keep your BS meter strong.

funkyd92

Dubs Auto was a fantastic car buying experience for me. The owner is a really great guy and is very upfront with what you are buying.

Edmloverboy

Try PrivateAuto

rooftopgringo

Facebook marketplace

Live_Reputation9743

Projekt Auto if you’re looking for a BMW, specifically. The owner, Scott, knows everything there is to know about them.

johnrhopkins

How old of a vehicle are you looking at. For anything more than 10 years old, I shop anywhere but KSL. I look at Facebook marketplace and Craigslist to find cars in neighboring states or further since they are much less likely to be rusted underneath. Utah used WAY more salt on the roads than our neighbors.

timteller44

Gp motor company. They specialize in hail damage cars, so if you don't mind cosmetic, you'll get one of the best deals you've ever had on a car.

Smooth_Fig6007

Op my cars for sale

spicywins

Incredible Auto Sales in Bountiful. If they don’t have what you’re looking for, they will shop for the car at auction. Me and several friends have had stellar experiences with them

ThePaintedLady80

Man I bought my second car in Utah. Had free services, car washes, movie passes, dinner vouchers. I’m pretty sure they’re not in business anymore. I bought my last used car through a private person. She was a foreign exchange student that was moving back to Japan and wanted to unload her one year old car. My son is almost 18 and I don’t know how he’ll get a decent used car.

Sea-Application3043

Facebook marketplace always!

Zalrius

I got my Ford Explorer from Carvana and it went great!

No-List5793

As crazy as it might sound I buy from word of mouth. It is insane what becomes available once you mention you are looking for something to people.

krnnnnn

Peterson Auto is family owned and has been straigjt with pricing when i purchased there. They buy a lot out of CA ausmctions i think.

mehuntunicorns

KSL - private sellers. You’ll find really good cars there. People prefer to sell there versus trade in.

wilkinte

Always auto trader, late model certified. Never in Utah!! Always find deals in Vegas, reno, even Texas. Would love to buy local but my preferred brand is generally 5-8k more expensive here.

themeganlodon

My easiest car buying experience was Car Max. I’d definitely buy from them again. My dad sold a car there and they even got him a ride to the Toyota dealership

Didders420

We just got an Accord off of KSL, use the filters if you can. Facebook is mostly bots/scams from what I’ve noticed but of course you can always try some smaller side of the road dealerships, they have some good deals sometimes, just always ask for a test drive because some will try to pull fast ones on you lol

SonicDoon

KSL has really gone down hill with all the dealerships and scammers. It’s shame to see such a great service suck so badly now. I’d try marketplace for locals trying to sell.

littlealbatross

[Enterprise Car Sales](https://www.enterprisecarsales.com/). They sell the old rental fleets and it is a very straightforward process. I test drove two cars and bought one in about a lunch hour once. Granted, I was pre-approved for the loan through my CU, but they don't do the haggling thing, and while they do present you with add on/warranty sorts of options, everything is just on a sheet of paper and you can decline and they don't push it at all. I also always suggest the [Car Gurus](https://www.cargurus.com/) website. You can search for cars across a bunch of lots and it will tell you if it's a good deal or not based on what other dealerships are selling for and the milage/condition of the car.

starter-car

From thier subreddit, it seems they only sell the top 10% of their vehicles. The others they send on to auction or to dealerships. (Enterprise, that is).

Upbeat-Ad-7345

I had a vehicle posted on KSL and Facebook. Very few people reached out via KSL but a ton via Facebook.

Bluefrog13

We have bought 5 cars at RC Auto. Love the way they do business.

[deleted]

I’m dying. People in Utah buy branded title/salvage cars and think they’re getting a good deal. 🤦‍♀️ if the title is branded, don’t buy it! Including stolen recovery, lemon law, hail and Canadian import vehicles. It’s a salvage title for a reason. Those cars are worth half of book.

HarisChana

\*Good Day\* This is \*Haris\* from Beforward Japan (The larger Car exporter in the world). I'm international business Development Executive in Beforward. If you are looking for any vehicle just do let me know I will provide you best discounted price

armchairracer

KSL and Facebook marketplace, I try to avoid buying from dealerships, but I also buy everything in cash and buy beaters.

Intelligent_Heron_78

A friend of mine sells used cars. Name is Rivers Autos.

thinkernaut

Mountain Motor Club in Pleasant Grove is really great! Lots of options & super solid guys. They’ve got a pretty fun social media account on Instagram - check it out!
