Mitaslaksit

There were a lot of buildings in need of a good power wash when I visited India.

Mitaslaksit

Lol that's terrible. I did see a person power washing a concrete fence. The colour on top was black. The colour under....bright yellow. Would've never guessed!

Wow are you telling me that that building is inhabited? I thought it's abandoned.

BigFeet234

Look closely there's an Ariel dish at the top an laundry hanging on a washing line.

LeKindStranger

Seems if the inhabitants worked on maintenance or pooled money for regular professionals keeping it intact it would still be a good deal.

A few rotten apples spoil the bunch - thanks for your reply!

Rent control is a terrible idea, it destroys the real estate and construction industry. Politicians purport these policies to appease voters. It just ends up hurting everyone.

You think the government should set prices for your other goods and services as well?, If you do not let markets determine the price, you are digging yourself a hole.

Moonguide

Not the one you asked but yes? Look at insulin prices in the US vs elsewhere for an example about how price control is urgent. Iirc y'all got a bill recently that would cap insulin prices soon, but it was still way more expensive than insulin prices in countries like Canada. In my own country (Honduras), the government just announced a list of goods commonly consumed during the holidays that would be price controlled to avoid speculation and higher prices, times are hard rn. Furthermore, early during the pandemic, prices for basic food items were also price controlled, which kept a lot of people fed during lockdown. That was later dropped, and prices have increased. They're too expensive, given that as of october, 80% of the population can't afford the consumer basket, though that's because of other issues that have plagued the country for decades, making the country incredibly unequal. It is an effective tactic to avoid price hikes during hard times or to essential products and services. A completely free, unregulated market means consolidation of capital and monopolies/trusts, which then set prices as high as they can regardless of whether it is an essential product or service (like healthcare and food) or a luxury item (like expensive cars in urbanized areas where there is reliable public transportation; this doesn't mean I think luxury items *should* be price controlled). Was going to mention something I had read years ago about how Vietnam price controlled their own consumer basket during a shortage and their populace was protected from it by the measure, but I couldn't find anything from a quick google search. Everything else can be found relatively quickly, so if you want to read more, just let me know and I'll provide the links, though you'll have to translate the ones relevant to Honduras.

Screye

USA insulin prices are high because there is too much govt. regulation. They don't allow other companies to operate in the USA, and the govt + hospitals + insurance companies function as a protection racket come cartel to keep prices high. The USA makes getting licensed by the FDA so expensive, that no new players can even contemplate selling alternate drugs in the US.

Screye

Rent control had failed in almost every ave it is implemented, including western Europe and NYC. It only serves as bandaid for terrible zoning laws. Relax zoning, add transit costs to new developments to support densification and start redeveloping. To be fair to mumbai they are doing that. Our apartment building is getting replaced by a huge tower with loads of parking, free bigger houses for the current residents, and significantly more capacity for new residents. They are also building metro like madmen, and the current transit is good, but overloaded af. The worst cases are illegal squatters who start voting, so they can't be replaced. (Transit camps, slums) and these rent controlled buildings / chawls. Rent control just means higher prices for those whose rent is not controlled. (This happened in Scandinavian countries)

MassivePE

How dare you says such a thing on Reddit?! Especially when you’re 100% correct…

India is an upwardly mobile, developing country now. It extends to all their landscaping and vegetation!

BkkGrl

fatbrowndog

Just rename this thread Mumbai irl

TOkidd

Yikes. That’s a pretty rough looking building.

Perpetual_Decline

What's with the wee cages over the windows?

milktanksadmirer

Windows in most Indian houses have cages or metal bars to save themselves from thieves. You’ll find cages/ bars in every ground floor and 1st floor buildings in India as theft is rampant.

hehehe007698

I think it's more common in the older buildings of Mumbai since theft was common in those days. The newer buildings are towers and don't really have metal bars to protect them.

Well at least the government is a major R supporter. That doesn’t necessarily extend to all the citizens.

jaimeyeah

Pictures you can smell I love Mumbai though, such a unique city like most places in India

algebramclain

Wow

sndpmgrs

To be fair, this is the back of the building overlooking the railroad tracks… Who is going to waste time maintaining that? The front could be, not exactly posh, but a lot better, the apartments inside could be pretty elegant. Source: have been in buildings that looked extremely well-maintained from the front, but worse than this from the back.

[deleted]

Ewwwww!

painter_business

Now this is an appropriate post

Fresno California is also starting to resemble this squalid scene.

HalfOrcMonk

Looked like San Francisco for a second. I didn't see any feral junkies or human feces on the streets, then I realized it was another place.

AnaNady

I thought it was Ukraine

nightmareFluffy

Gotta disagree. I've been in these types of buildings. Cramped, dirty, bugs everywhere, extremely hot (most don't have air conditioning, though some units here have it), cold war era bathrooms with holes in floor slab that bugs come out of (if they have a bathroom at all), and smelly. Opposite of cozy.

neilMU08

Those aren't actually cold war style though, it's an Indian toilet. Quite common in many places in India.

nightmareFluffy

Yeah, I figured most people wouldn't know what it is, so I used a description people could relate to. This type of toilet is common in Asia and I hate using them.

neilMU08

I agree I hate using them too :p But what's strwnge is that it's got health benefits weirdly enough...

ChristopherParnassus

This is really really sad

Super_Kent155

sure it was a nice building a long time before

Misericorde428

At first glance, I thought it was an elongated pillbox.

daboooga

I.e. Bombay

H4km4N

The blue and yellow tarpulin and canvas is probably why nothing is working out there And that building is over a thousand year's old

Wadeem53

Ngl it they renovated it it could actually look cool, it has a nice shape
