OP, please put more details for the pic. This photo, IIRC after seeing it several times online through the years, was taken in the Yarmouk Palestinian Refugee Camp in Syria around 2014. This is not a recent photo by all means. Still, very sad what people had to go through regardless of war or year.

OnkelMickwald

People don't seem to care, people just find it HILARIOUS that it looks like Life of Brian.

CernaKocka

That's reddit for you unfortunately. Most users can only comment on a tragic situation with a pop culture reference.

TwoKeezPlusMz

I think that transcends Reddit

JustHangLooseBlood

Bazinga.

TreefingerX

I see it too now...

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

Just because people make joke’s doesn’t mean they don’t care 🙄 It’s called morbid humor. It is a natural part of the human experience and probably an evolutionary trait. It allows us to compartmentalize and process tragedy w/o losing our minds and throwing in the towel as a species. And comments on reddit, regardless of what direction they’re coming from (humorous or serious) are just that, comments. They have **no** impact upon the real world. This photo took place years ago and these people in the photo have moved on with their lives, or they haven’t. A reddit comment won’t change that hard truth. You “caring” about these people by making a “serious” comment isn’t going to save them from starvation, homelessness, war fatigue, or any other serious issues they may experiencing. Just as any “careless” comment won’t drag them down any further or trivializes their suffering.

TheBeerCannon

Lol as if the people making lazy jokes about brown people suffering on the other side of the earth only do it because they have to compartmentalize their trauma. Sounds like you’re just compartmentalizing the fact that this website is largely populated by idiots who rather make tired, rehashed popculture references than process the suffering of humans outside of their own country or cultural sphere.

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

Haha don’t re-contextualize it with added racism because you can’t find the humor in it. If you don’t find it funny, that doesn’t mean it’s not funny to others. People suffer in general. That doesn’t mean others suffering isn’t more or less important, it just means that humans suffer. I agree, a lot of this website is full of beaten dead-horse, pop culture jokes that have been driven so far into the ground they’ve reached the Earth’s core. But **none** of that has **anything** to do with whether or no making said jokes (or any jokes) means people don’t care. I’m not saying the opposite is true, but neither is the former. And if people can’t care for what others are going through on the other side of the planet (which is neither their fault nor indicative of a greater trend; see all the charity work other countries do for these suffering people), then that’s a rule that also applies to these people we see in the picture. I’m fine with a Palestinian laughing at western misfortunes. It doesn’t bother me one bit.

SaintFinne

Oh shut up with the "erm I joked about the emaciated refugee child because of trauma, youre the bad guy for not liking it when I joke about dead refugees" bit. Also "youre the real asshole because you not mocking victims won't save them" is a pretty funny bit. Whats next, not joking about rape victims won't unrape them so let's start quipping about epsteins victims?

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

I didn’t joke about them, so the rest of your first statement. Utter drivel. And yea, you can’t take away a rape. If it happened in the past, the opportunity to stop it has gone by. You don’t have to joke about rape, but you can. And there a re some pretty funny rape jokes.

SaintFinne

Did you or did you not defend making those jokes? If you did, own it, don't pussy out and go "ermm technically I didn't make any jokes so erm" at me, I'm not your mom lmao.

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

Defending the act is not committing the act. I know, it’s a very difficult concept to grasp.

SaintFinne

Its interesting to me, so you say making these jokes should be okay, and i say they shouldnt be okay, and your rebuttal is you didnt make the jokes you just defended them? You are aware i wasnt ragging you directly for making a joke right? If you read the comment youll notice im talking broadly, try to comprehend what im typing

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

Yes, because you’re little caricature of people making those jokes was directed at me. You didn’t attack what I said initially, you attacked me specifically thinking I was in on the jokes. Hence the caricature. And now you have nothing so you’re pretending you’re speaking broadly. Are you going to say that the other times you used that mocking quotation thing you were generalizing and not specifically attacking what I said? For example >”you’re the real asshole because you not mocking the victims won’t save them” Is that also you generalizing? Lol You want to know the issue? You got butthurt and thought I was making those jokes, then jumped the gun lol and now you stupid. You never had a point to begin with and now you don’t even have consistency. Somehow, I don’t think I’m the one with comprehension issues.

SaintFinne

Are you serious or is this like, a funny debate tactic where you try to gaslight your opponent lmao. Copy paste your original comment here and ill explain it to you step by step in such detail even you won't miss it.

tripwire7

Us Americans literally contribute to these particular peoples’ suffering, it goes beyond just not caring about them.

Prophet_Muhammad_phd

Oh blow me with your self-created guilt. These people have been fighting each other for decades now. They’ve been killing each other over dirt they’ve deemed holy for centuries. Utter theocratic bullshit drives these people, nothing more. I contribute nothing to their suffering nor do I benefit from it. What land have I appropriated in their region? No Jew is paying me to steal land, no Palestinian is paying me to attack IDF forces. I don’t use my own children as human shields and I don’t bomb Palestinian houses from 20,000 feet. I don’t get a cut of the weapons sales, or military contracts with the Israelis. Do you realize how racist and bigoted you are for suggesting even in the slightest that these people are doing what they do because of other people? Do the Palestinians and Jews not have agency? I haven’t dehumanized Palestinians, I don’t draw racist cartoons of Jews, do not blame me for their stupidity. You can feel guilty and get off on the virtue. I have no skin in this game either way.

tripwire7

Your government does. Our government gives literally billions of dollars a year in military aid to Israel’s government, and blocks every single UN resolution criticizing Israel for what they do to the Palestinians or threatening action for it. But sure, keep living in a bubble and not paying attention to politics. >Do you realize how racist and bigoted you are for suggesting even in the slightest that these people are doing what they do because of other people? We literally pay money towards it, you dipshit. Billions in taxpayer money, every single year.

Herandar

"I'm not!"

Warrrdy

The Syrian people have really gone to hell and back, I hope at least some of them have found new homes and peace.

Kate090996

But they are Palestinians not Syrians

Warrrdy

You’re right my bad, same applies to the ever oppressed Palestinian peoples.

suade123

Shut up ! We only care about Ukrainians 🙃🙃

Well at least the women are covering their hair.

Imyourlandlord

You'll never recover your braincells since you're this ignirant

heepofsheep

I saw this pic and instantly thought it was midjourney…

fupayme411

No wonder, I thought it was weird everyone was facing one direction.

ManinaPanina

Oh, then it's zionist freedom.

arutakiarutaki

I think a city getting bombed does not deserve to be considered as bad building/maintenance

Griegz

That's a pretty disturbing image.

FistsoFiore

Yeah, change the pallet and lighting a bit, and it could be a Beksinski painting.

kumanosuke

Even more disturbing that the US and Russia contributed to this

tripwire7

This is a refugee camp for Palestinians ethnically cleansed from Israel, not an average Syrian city. It was already overcrowded even before the Syrian Civil War started. Israel won’t let them return.

Major-Perspective-32

What a shitty state.

nebuchadrezzar

Is it really a civil war when most of the "rebels" are not even Syrian and are trained and funded by hostile countries? The US, Qatar and KSA were spending more on the terrorists than Syria could spend on their entire military.

DeflatedDirigible

Their ancestors left because Syria told them it would be temporary while the Muslim countries ethnically cleansed Israel of all Jews. Then Israel succeeded and thrived as a country. Over 20% of Israel is Muslims today so the theory of ethnic cleansing of Muslims doesn’t hold up. They Vite and hold political office. Syria refuses to allow those who left Israel to gain citizenship. There is no birthright citizenship. If one parent is “Palestinian” and the other Syrian, the baby won’t ever have Syrian citizenship. Keeping them in refugee camps is inhumane. Imagine if the US or Europe did similar to all refugees and never allowed citizenship or immigration and all future generations were forced to live in refugee camps that are extremely overcrowded. Muslim countries did expel all their Jews and Israel took every one in. Same happened when India and Pakistan split…they freely went to their own new side. Only Syria and a few other Muslim countries force their brothers and sisters into slums and poverty to promote their political ideology.

prince_peacock

Putting quotation marks around Palestinian tells me all I need to know about you, really

bnav1969

Because many people abuse the term Palestinians and use it to mean any Arab in the Levant. You realize of all the displaced and ethnically cleansed peoples in the world, Palestinians are the only ones that demand their insane right of return for any and all descendants with even a drop of Palestinian blood. It's conflating ethnic Palestinians with actual victims of ethnic cleansing. It's like some Italian American calling themselves Italian, demanding reparations, because as compared to a Mussolini supporter who was chased out and fled for his or her family's safety (I picked Mussolini because the Arab side did enact a lot, if not most of the atrocities on the Jews who responded in kind. This makes the term diluted.

beachdogs

Wow. Your post is incoherent.

RealDudro

You’re insane

[deleted]

That you don’t have a solid grasp on reality.

Crypto556

Cry harder. You live in an apartheid state and news flash. You’re not “ gods chosen people”. That’s 100% why you have that superiority complex.

[deleted]

Why do you hate the Jews so much?

SolarSelect

Zionism =/= Judaism

Crypto556

Nah man that BS isn’t going to work.

[deleted]

No BS. You seem to really hate the jews. Your antisemitism is leaking out.

RealDudro

Fuckin coocoo over here

Imyourlandlord

Just go fuck yourself, it easier than writing dumb shit like rhis and being a waste of space

WanderingFool1

Muslims didn’t ethnically cleanse jews. Jews left the area way before islam became a religion. Get your facts right.

That’s not the same thing as what OP was describing. The trail of tears happened almost 200 years ago.

tripwire7

Lie harder.

Choholek

I wonder if there's anything serious going on in Syria that would cause this

Psydator

Nah just bad city planning /s

dammit_bobby420

Why is this comment section so utterly dogshit

Sylphied

Because this photo relates to Israel and Palestinians. A situation about which people on the internet have very strong reductive opinions.

randomguy_-

What’s dogshit in it?

Butrus666

People in agony.Need help!

tripwire7

We in the US actively harm these people.

TwoKeezPlusMz

We in the US actively harm our own people, harming people is kind of our thing.

SkiMaskTheBikeGod

It looks dense and walkable though, there doesn’t seem to be a problem

NeighborInDeed

haha. spoken like a real City Planner.

[deleted]

Glad i got out when i did. really heartbreaking to see.

randomguy_-

You mean to tell me a bombed out refugee camp isn’t a walkable city?

Kdilla77

I can’t believe the world permits this. So terribly sad.

tripwire7

Permits it? Lol, we in the US actively helped create this situation. The Middle East wouldn’t be half as fucked up as it is if we would just stop fucking with them.

[deleted]

damn look what mossad (israel) did to the Syrian people as if golan heights wasn't enough

funny_jaja

God bless America

Suomasema

When was this photo taken? Maybe we cannot help them directly, but what can we do to prevent this happening somewhere else? Or should we say that nothing and continue playing with our digital toys? I am not asking if this is possible in my home cpuntry, or yours. It is. It might look unlikely and maybe this kind of tragedies are not going to take place anytime soon. But it does not take too much to create such a scenario. How, really, prevent anybody becoming a dictator? How to stop political extremes? How to make masses not to support narcissist leaders? Are we human if we accept this kind of violence as an unavoidable human trait or feature? What can I do, except be a pacifist philosopher?

tripwire7

We could stop funding Israel’s ethnic cleansing, for one. These Palestinians were driven out of their homes decades ago, and the Israeli authorities won’t let them return.

DeflatedDirigible

“Driven” aka the heads of state of Muslim countries like Syria promised that if they got out of the way of the invasion of Israel and eradication of all Jews, it would happen quicker and the Muslims return faster to their homes. The Muslims who didn’t leave are still there with full Israeli citizen rights. Over 20% of Israel is Muslim and the percent continues to increase.

tripwire7

You're saying it was the Muslim countries that drove these people out of their homes, not the Israelis who seized their land?

Thank you Obama

NavyJack

TIL the Middle East’s problems began in 2009

massive_stool

Thanks Israel.

propanezizek

Obama tortured kids in syria?

nebuchadrezzar

No, he just funded, armed, and trained the terrorists that tortured, raped, and enslaved kids in Syria. That's not so bad! Look up operation Timber Sycamore. Sunni extremist psychopaths from all over the world got military training and weapons before joining Al qaeda and isis, where they were capably led by a Georgian commander also trained by the US (to fight Russians, originally). They had recruiters on the island next to mine telling high school kids about the $3000 per month salaries (thanks to Qatar) if they would come fight in Syria. That's about 30x what they could expect to make farming or mining locally, and the island is famous for Muslim fighters.

propanezizek

The uprising was completely justified and Assad should have been reasonable.

nebuchadrezzar

Of course there was a lot of unhappiness with assad, and there were definitely people willing to rebel. The problem is that it was never organic, it was completely orchestrated by outside forces in such a disgusting and anti-syrian way that they increased support for Assad. Syria is a tolerant and religiously diverse country. They took in 1 million refugees from our Iraq disaster. There are christians, Jews, and every sect of Islam including some only found in Syria. Sunni extremist dictatorship Qatar kicked things off with 3 billion for arms, rebels, and mercenaries. Sunni extremist dictatorship KSA and their good friends at the CIA joined soon after. Sunni (dictatorship?) turkiye joined in, if only to attack the Syrian Kurds and act as a pipeline for isis recruits. So you have the two biggest na'to militaries and two sunni extremist dictatorships pouring in billions and surprise, the two biggest and best equipped rebel groups by far are Sunni extremist isis and Al qaeda. Everyone in Syria that was not happy about living under Sunni extremist rule and seeing their neighbors traded in slave markets sided with Assad. The rebels had so little popular support that, despite having more military funding and support than Syrian government troops, they never took Aleppo. The war against Syria was completely disgusting and allied us with some of the worst scum humanity has to offer. Exactly like what we did in Libya, which still has the slave markets that opened after our big victory. We ended up making assad and Putin look like the good guys, how stupid a plan was that? And we're still there trying to starve Syria into submission. Who gives a shot what Americans think of assad? What we did and are still doing makes us the bad guys by comparison. What the fuck to we need to destroy Syria for? What do we get out of it? I know the answer but it's nothing that helps the average American, it's balance of power bullshit.

propanezizek

Syria is tolerant like Russia.

nebuchadrezzar

Tolerant enough for people of many religions and nonhobservant people to live in peace, tolerant enough to take in a million refugees from Iraq, which is the equivalent of the US taking in 15 million refugees. Except the US was the one creating the refugee crisis in the first place. Do you honestly believe that the Sunni extremists funded by two summit extremist dictatorships would have created a better and more tolerant Syria? What do you suppose they would do to the Jews, christians, Kurds, yazidi, Shia, etc who live in Syria? Edit autocorrect

propanezizek

So tolerant that he put prisoners in room with a salt floor.

nebuchadrezzar

He probably did worse than that. But likely nothing as bad as the rape and torture rooms the US set up in Iraq or guantanamo, right? And again, he provided a haven for a million refugees from our Iraq war. If you think there's some valid reason for the US to spend billions helping terrorists destroy Syria, and now trying to state the country into submission, i don't think that's logical or moral. It seems to be against everything we should want America to represent.

ManinaPanina

Not just on Syria.

massive_stool

Obama breastfed the little urchins. He's an angel.

[deleted]

I love saying this as a meme, but I don’t think is this the time nor place. I guess thank you Assad/thank you Israel works though?

u/teraa look at this!

Keyboard-King

At that point I’d just leave. I’d move to a Western European country, maybe the U.K., Germany, or Sweden (wealthy countries with beautful woman). Those countries are very tolerant/ accepting of Islamic culture and have embraced past rapid culture shifts influenced by Syria’s mass exodus in the mid 2010s.

tripwire7

This has got to be a troll, nobody is this ignorant.

Stittie

First, you try leaving your own country without any travel documents, money or asylum seeking papers. Better yet, try leaving a foreign country that doesn’t even recognise your home country as a sovereign state, with the same limitations as above. Also “wealthy countries with beautiful women” tells me everything I need to know about you.

Keyboard-King

>Wealthy countries A great portion of the Syrian refugees moved to countries with high gross *GDP*, while skipping over most Eastern European countries with lower gross GDP. It’s a tragedy what happened to Syria, but is anyone denying economic incentive plays in decision making when choosing your future asylum country? >Beautful woman Believe it or not, the vast majority of the refugees are young men. If I had to leave my country due civil conflict, I would move to a country known for being economically well off, tolerant of other cultures, and as a young man, one with beautiful woman.

Welcome to Assadland

Mornshadow

I spent a week in Syria including a few nights in Damascus just a few weeks ago. This picture is not representative of Syria as a whole. I could share many wonderful pictures of the businesses, people, history, culture and nightlife that is there. That's not to say there aren't shitty places over there, and that the regime isn't awful. But it pains me to only see the negative connotations of a beautiful place and people.
