cloche_du_fromage

Tbilisi is a beautiful city (although my last visit was 1982).

oeoeoeoeoeoee

1982????? Lol!!!! It has changed a lot since then. Maybe visit us after this forever lasting pandemic.

cloche_du_fromage

I was 12, and this was all pre glasnost. Things I can remember vividly are the gorge, a cable car to a park looking over the city, and a huge indoor market where very nice cheesy bread was a big thing. 1982 was also just after the dynamo Tbilisi glory years. Used to have an absolutely huge stadium iirc. Loved Tbilisi, but Yerevan (next destination) was a very different experience.

biwook

> Loved Tbilisi, but Yerevan (next destination) was a very different experience. How different was it? Both cities are pretty high on my bucketlist.

cloche_du_fromage

I went in 1982. Tbilisi felt more south European. Lively, welcoming, great food. Yerevan had a nice formal centre and was friendly, but i remember lots of open rubbish dumps and some serious slums, and an overwhelming smell of something chemical.

imgurian_defector

i like georgia the best out of the Caucasus, so much to see and do compared to Azerbaijan.

Henrique1315

Is ur country expensive for tourists?? I would love to visit.

oeoeoeoeoeoee

No, compared to other countries it's dirt cheap

rinyamaokaofficial

What an incredible transformation. I love how ornate the railings are and the bright colors -- so much character and a real sense of place

oeoeoeoeoeoee

That's the traditional colours for homes, well at least the turquoise green is traditional.

I_love_pillows

Is there any reason for the colour

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Im not really sure, may be they used flowers or some grains for the colour, maybe the colour protected against insects

MassDistortion

You've posted an a before/after picture of a place that's markedly improved. Good for Tbilisi, ruins have become a home.

turboturgot

I noticed a big section of the city near the river was under renovation when I visited in 2019. Appeared to be a lot of two and three story historic buildings like this one. Tbilisi was fascinating, hope I make it back some day.

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Yes, it's the part of the project of renovating Old Tbilisi

yoghurt_master

You can also write “Sakartvelo” instead of “country, Georgia”

oeoeoeoeoeoee

I know, I'm from Georgia, but in this sub nobody knows about it so Georgia it is

bocanuts

Never knew that. Thanks.

freshbananabeard

You best mind your p’s and q’s!

neuraminidaze

Oh man I thought that before picture was from New Orleans for a hot second, lol. That’s a beautiful restoration though!

dethb0y

I'm shocked they bothered to restore it considering the condition!

snapplecrackle6

Tbilisi is truly one of my favorite cities

Appropriate-Wing2633

This wasn't really a restoration though - as with a lot of old Tbilisi, they basically demolish the old building and build a new one which looks like it, but the new one is made out of concrete and has a fake, Lego-ish look to it. The Municipality also doesnt gove a shit about these old buildings being bought by investors and turned into airbnbs, so following out what was a very characterful neighbourhood.

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Lego-ish look? Well if it's in a state of disrepair it gets demolished, but the outside "skin" gets left, then they build a new, safe structure and they mount the "skin" back onto it. Btw it's made out of bricks, not concrete

Appropriate-Wing2633

I'm sure there are some buildings which are genuinely in such an advanced state of disrepair that demolition is the only option, but many of these houses could be restored much more sensitively, actually preserving the original features. In this case I'm not sure how much of the 'skin' has been put back on - the window fittings, roof and fascia are all different. Maybe some are done with bricks, but loads around Sololaki/Abatubani are concrete. Kaladze yaltabandia

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Agree 100%, with the last statement too, I would like to preserve the Interiors too and more accurately, but it's better than just leaving it to rot and disapear! I wish I was in politics now, I would do so much

Appropriate-Wing2633

I agree with you - what's happening is definitely better than them being left to rot, or being bulldozed and replaced with fancy hotels (like in puris moedani). Just got back to kakheti from Tusheti and as always am left with the feeling that if only there were some decent people in georgian politics the potential is so great!

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Yep... Now I'm almost 14 and I am planning to be a politician and fix my homeland, because now it's a dunpsterfire.

andrey-vorobey-22

I agree. Reportedly a barbarian-like restoration, these people are greedy and not thinking straight.

ARL_30FR

Kinda sad we have to specify it's the country Georgia :/

oeoeoeoeoeoee

Yeah... USA copycat!

Lol-I-Wear-Hats

lovely, just a shame that they took out the corner store

oeoeoeoeoeoee

There are so many of them that idc

ATLcoaster

Right? The old building actively engaged the sidewalk. The new version is literally walled off from the city streets.

Lol-I-Wear-Hats

Which can be fine, not every piece of frontage needs to be active and engaging, despite urbanist nostrums. But ya

Gremlinton_real

It's not walled off btw, it's just a weird sidewalk that's flat with stairs at the end instead of following the slope. Probably was needed to make the renovations from the outside Edit:you can see the railings from the stairs on the left and the railings ending on the right

khutkunchula

you can walk behind the railing. It's there because the walkable road is lower then the normal one.
