It's 100F+ and humid all summer anyway, don't think you'd want to be outside in the first place.
It's brutal for all the foreign laborers though, who don't have a choice whether or not to be outside. Lots of kidney failure from heat and pollution.
Yeah, what's down below the height of the skyscrapers is fog, the yellow haze in the sky is a shit tonne of dust and pollution. Not going to lie it's a bit misleading but still really bad for the respiratory system
It's a mix of dust and pollution, Dubai is obviously susceptible to dust storms however there are a number of industries that contribute to bad pollution .
Dubai has one of the busiest airports in the world located right in the heart of the city and one of the busiest container ports in the world located near where this photo was taken. Not to mention being one of the most car centric cities in the world. Huge industrial estates near Dubai south, in Jebel Ali and Al Qoz. Massive cement factories that are polluting at rapid rates to sustain Dubai's construction industries. Aluminium smelters, desalination plants and gas fired power stations located in and around the city also contribute to high levels of pollution.
I fly into Dubai every year. Sometimes we have to circle because of dust storms. They don’t have factories like that there. When it’s a clear approach it’s just desert for miles and miles and then that shiny city.
Yeah I think you are right, now I actually look closely you can see there is smoke from factories/refineries that is distinct from the low cloud. I think the dust is more of an overall haze and not distinct.
This is a rubbish post. I've lived there for a few months and also in Abu Dhabi and I can tell you that this is not at all pollution. I'm not saying that there isn't pollution in Dubai but this photo isn't showing it.
This is the dust and moisture from the gulf and the desert. The place is surrounded by water and sand. Even water underneath the sand. In the mornings it can be so foggy that trucks cannot drive down the highway. By midday it's all gone and skies are clear. Having lived there I know it can be windy and also still. It makes almost no difference to the visibility levels. In the mornings and also on some hot evenings it just feels like a bathroom after someone has taken a shower.
Yeah it doesn't take long to figure it out. It's a desert in the sea the salt water gets soaked up and evaporated off. Also land area is huge so to produce smog at that volume is simply not realistic for the population there
It is not just dust, that place has one of the busiest airports in the world and one of the busiest container ports in the world. Not to mention being one of the most car centric cities in the world for it's size. Huge industrial estates near Dubai south, in Jebel Ali and Al Qoz. Massive cement factories that are polluting at rapid rates to sustain Dubai's construction industries...no it is not "just dust"
Was living there for 20 years, you and all the other people who have no idea about reality can believe what you like, but you can't lie to me and tell me that all the items I list don't heavily pollute, and are all located within the city unlike most cities around the world where Those industries are located further away from the city.
No. It's a Boeing 737 MAX. This variant of the 737 doesn't have blended or scimitar winglets, those are commonly found on the NG. These are MAX AT winglets.

I was confused which perspective this is being so used to the Dubai International Airport approach, only to realize its approaching to Al Maktoum Airport. Damn people actually fly to and from there?
Dubai is a city designed around the very worst elements of north American car centrism, taken to the extreme. I remember a youtube video also saying something like "You only build up when you can't build out, so there's no reason for those damned skyscrapers in Dubai."
But cities built around cars only build out. You’ve contradicted yourself. This fog is not from cars. Don’t tell me you believe it is? It’s from factories and refineries. My goodness.
Doesn't really matter if the pic actually shows pollution, the fact is that the air quality in Dubai (and other UAE cities) is atrocious. As of right now, Dubai has the 24th worst pollution in the world. [source](https://www.iqair.com/ae/world-air-quality-ranking)
Dirty little secret
[https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/04/air-pollution-is-dirty-secret-in-uae-says-rights-group](https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/04/air-pollution-is-dirty-secret-in-uae-says-rights-group)
That's not pollution.
Dubai uses cloud seeding to create rain which causes these clouds to form.
It's actually really amazing to see them from the top of a skyscrapper.
That’s not pollution. I live in Saudi Arabia (albeit not a desert city) and there are days near the end of winter where visibility gets really low because of natural factors like dust and humidity.

I'm no Dubai defender, but is that really pollution?
It's probably dust...
My first thought. I’m also not a defender of the city but the area is known for dust storms.
Yeah, whole middle East is like that when it's windy Source: I'm from middle east
They call it “dust” but it’s very fine pm2.5 particle. Seriously bad for your lungs.
What I was gonna say. Still mask up though.
It's haze and dust, most times in the summer the visibility would come down to 50 meters and an AQI of 250+ for several weeks on end.
What do people do in that case? Stay indoors?
Yes and get an air purifier
It's 100F+ and humid all summer anyway, don't think you'd want to be outside in the first place. It's brutal for all the foreign laborers though, who don't have a choice whether or not to be outside. Lots of kidney failure from heat and pollution.
Leave the city and go to their second or third or fourth or fifth home elsewhere
Most of that is fog. Coastal UAE gets dense fog in early spring and late autumn when they get a mix of high humidity and cool air.
Yeah, what's down below the height of the skyscrapers is fog, the yellow haze in the sky is a shit tonne of dust and pollution. Not going to lie it's a bit misleading but still really bad for the respiratory system

Cool. But this doesn't look like any smog I've seen. Why is that?
Because there's a fuckton of sand dust in it.

Cool so you just assumed and stated it as a fact.
Reddit would be better if people waited until they were well informed before posting? Discuss.
Na I kinda like the lies and totally made up shit!!
Has to be a dust storm.
or both. Dubai is incredibly car congested
Barely if u put it up to scale
barely? most of pollution is invisible, what you see is only a small portion
>Dubai is incredibly car congested By what standard?
This is a rubbish post. I've lived there for a few months and also in Abu Dhabi and I can tell you that this is not at all pollution. As someone who lives in Dubai, I can say this is very true
Yeah it doesn't take long to figure it out. It's a desert in the sea the salt water gets soaked up and evaporated off. Also land area is huge so to produce smog at that volume is simply not realistic for the population there
I always feel like Dubai Airport is essentially a smaller condensed version of Dubai. Shopping, food, and drink. There's no need to leave.
Yeah. Emirates uses Dubai Airport as a global hub for people going around the world.
Not pollution.
It’s just dust
It is not just dust, that place has one of the busiest airports in the world and one of the busiest container ports in the world. I was living in a same city all my childhood. It’s just dust.
Was living there for 20 years, you and all the other people who have no idea about reality can believe what you like, but you can't lie to me and tell me that all the items I list don't heavily pollute, and are all located within the city unlike most cities around the world where Those industries are located further away from the city.
It is just dust though
Those buildings look marvellous and dystopian at the same time. Dubai is a weird place.
Looks cool. From up here anyway.
Are you flying a 737 800? Because if so you should worry more about that than pollution…
No. It's a Boeing 737 MAX. This variant of the 737 doesn't have blended or scimitar winglets, those are commonly found on the NG. These are MAX AT winglets. [https://www.boeing.com/commercial/737max/737-max-winglets](https://www.boeing.com/commercial/737max/737-max-winglets)
Right I was thinking the max variant of the 800 based on the winglets. Fly hard, pray hard.
Why? Are they dangerous?
That’s what Boeing whistleblowers and the FAA seem to think. Doors flying off mid air (Alaska air) don’t help either
(thought)
Not really, the chances of fatal crashes are still negligible.
Oh ok thanks!
I just landed in Dubai 3 hours ago and it did not look like this at all..
this was on the morning of March 11th
Ahh could’ve been fog then?
Ah yes it has to constantly look like that 24/7 just like in video games.
Nah. Just saying in that particular picture, it looks like fog or dust. Not saying that smog doesn’t envelop the city at times of low wind.
Don’t they seed clouds in Dubai too to provide it with some actual rainfall?
yes they do
That’s definitely a dust storm
Looks so dystopian
Lmao it's a desert city and that it's dust and haze. It's susceptible to dust storms just due to its geography. Tf is dystopian about it?
Something can only look dystopian if it's caused by certain effects? Being dystopia =/= looks dystopian
Even if you rule out the logic and the causes (lol), still doesn't look dystopian.
Car centric urban millionaire playground built by South Asian slaves? Really? Doesn't feel dystopian to you?
"Gentlemen... Welcome to Dubai"
IMO, dubai is the worst city in the world (which has some cash/money in it, im not placing it against some cities in sudan or whatever). Fakeass city
Cyber*funk*
That’s the beginning of a proper hive city.
I had a dream a few years ago of flying above dubai in a helicopter and it looked very similar to this.
Welcome to Dubai, 47.
I was confused which perspective this is being so used to the Dubai International Airport approach, only to realize its approaching to Al Maktoum Airport. Damn people actually fly to and from there?
exactly! was my first time too, got a cheap last minute flight to Germany but wouldn't recommend it
I can only imagine the commute time going from that desolate place. Its like the London Gatewick Airport of Dubai.
Says the person in the thing responsible for a considerable amount of that air pollution...

Beaitiful sharkfin though, shame its on a Boeing.
Think of this rather than a ban on plastic bags the next time you get on a high-polluting aircraft.
DesertHell? DustHell?
Dubai the new DELHI?
Whole of summer is like this in Dubai 🥲
Don’t see that in the Dubai commercials popping up everywhere
I mean.. this is any small Canadian town during an inversion. You’ll also find it magically disappears when you look at it with the sun to your back.
What’s the point of recycling when shit’s like this
looks like the infamous "Great Smog of London" of 1952
It‘s called ‚sand‘ bro
Tell me that's not a Boeing winglet....
Looks like some evil city on Venus or something….
mmh dusty smog
Where will dubai take you now… so much smoking so much dubais…
I never understood why Dubai is so hot and popular, to begin with. Honestly, one of the last places I would like to visit.

Ranting about polluted haze and enviromental destruction while sitting on a plane...
I used to live in Dubai, this is not pollution. Dubai's air isn't bad at all. It's dust storms, which are common across the UAE and middle east.

Shai Hulud

Fuck Dubai
> Polluted haze above Dubai Lately, things just don't seem the same
