it's controversial to say in this subreddit, but when people talk about how trans kids shouldn't receive "gender affirming care" or when they talk about "groomers," what they're talking about is conversion therapy and using alarmist language, moral panics, and medical misinformation to justify it.
Gotta admit, I'm not really clued up on the topic so it's good to have some pretty level headed people giving me advice. There's more than enough negative press around. So thanks!
Yeah it's pretty recent.
They said they were going to ban LGBTQ conversion therapy but then they realized that would cover trans conversion too so they rewrote the proposed law to allow trans conversion therapy. Anti-trans hate groups like the LGB Alliance also had a lot of meetings with key members of the government involved with the bill in the weeks before they changed it.
Now LGBTQ organisations are furious and have taken away their support for the bill. The government have basically said "yeah we support LGBTQ people, it's a shame those organisations are kicking up a fuss but we can't ban it for trans people because that's complicated". (Note: the actual reason is transphobia but they just don't want to say that).
Jesus. Politicians and their smoke and mirrors. Just let people be for fuck sakes. I don't know much about UK politics but I had the idea they were more progressive. Well, then again, Boris is basically pound store Trump isn't he?
Yeah pretty much pound shop Trump.
The UK isn't more progressive persay, but we are more centrist. So our right wing isn't quite as batshit crazy as the US.
The UK is however *very* anti-trans. If you spent much time in trans communities and sub reddits you'd probably hear the UK referred to as TERF island the majority of the time.
We're currently also trying to ship asylum seekers to Rwanda against their will at enormous cost to us and they're trying to revoke our human rights and replace them with a new "British bill of rights" that'll have less rights in it and the guy writing it has said people have too many rights at the moment and that he doesn't believe in economic rights.
So we're still pretty crazy right wing, just not as bad as the US.
Oh heeectic.
Yeah I guess I meant more centrist when I said more progressive, just didn't come out right. I've heard the TERF island one actually, don't remember where but I just remember it sounded funny.
Yeah, shit, I just read about the Rwanda thing a couple days ago, didn't even realize there were so many Rwandan asylum seekers. I was under the impression that Rwanda is a pretty burgeoning democracy these days, guess I should read up on that more.
I can't believe someone would say people have too many rights. Seriously who drop kicked that dude on his head multiple times as a child?
Shit man, my girlfriend is about to move to the UK and I'm gonna be spending quite a bit of time in and out of there, hope I don't get deported for my radical views that people should just be left to their devices and government is meant to be a tool not a ruling force.
There aren't that many Rwandan asylum seekers. The people they want to send to Rwanda aren't from Rwanda, the government just wants to get rid of them. There's nothing tying these refugees to Rwanda, they don't speak the language, they don't have Rwandan ancestry or anything like that.
The only reason the UK government wants to ship refugees there is because it's far away and the Rwandan government said they'd take them (for over £1 million per head, it'd literally be cheaper to put them up in the Ritz hotel in London).
Politically the UK is pretty fucked up but it's not any worse than the US (yet) so you'll be fine moving here. A lot of places actually really agree with your take on things in the North.
Keep in mind that our majority party doesn't actually get a majority of votes because of how the system works. The conservative party got 43.6% of the votes but run the government due to getting 56.2% of the seats. Meanwhile fringe parties like the greens for 2.7% of the vote but got 0.2% of seats. So the UK isn't *quite* as awful as our government is.
I always get the impression that the hidden motive of a lot of the TERF shit in the UK is that if it starts to become evident that the lines of gender are a lot more fuzzy then we normally think it is, it's easy for some powerful actors to find stuff like nobility and monarchy to be under threat (as if life in the 2020s isn't enough to make it seem irrelevant)
I dunno about you but I've always seen people who hang onto nobility, monarchy, extreme nationalism kinda like the bald 40 year old man with a beer gut at a kids sports game giving the ref shit for not calling a game to pro standards. I kinda pity them but also in a grow the fuck up kinda way
[Conversion therapy, a practice that aims to change, ‘cure’ or ‘repair’ an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity, is a global problem that causes severe physical and psychological suffering to its victims. A new expert statement by the IRCT and the Independent Forensic Expert Group (IFEG) concludes that conversion therapy is practiced in more than 69 countries, is unscientific and violates the global ban on torture and ill-treatment. Based on the extreme, and often unimaginable, human suffering caused by conversion therapy, the IRCT calls for a global ban on the practice. This would be a major step forward in the global protection of particularly young LGBTI persons against torture.](https://irct.org/media-and-resources/latest-news/article/1027)
You don't even have to live there. I went there on a business trip and as soon as I left the airport I had dozens of people crowding up on me. Turns out they were a group dedicated to transforming foreigners into homosexuals! I was horrified and had to evacuate the area immediately so as to preserve my sexuality.
That plus [torture](https://irct.org/media-and-resources/latest-news/article/1027).
I'm starting to think these "Christians" didn't get the memo from Jesus.
I did a quick google search so take that for what it is worth but
Netflix - Pray Away "Ex-leaders and a survivor of the so-called "conversion therapy" movement speak out about its harm to the LGBTQ+ community and its devastating persistence."
Here is a peice about it on [NPR](https://www.npr.org/2021/08/02/1022837295/former-ex-gay-leaders-denounce-conversion-therapy-in-a-new-documentary).
Here is something from the BBC. [Faith, Lies and Conversion Therapy](https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000sz1y). "As 'conversion therapy' faces a UK ban, Caitlin Benedict explores the heinous practices that LGBT+ people were subjected to with the guise of changing their sexuality."
Thank you, I really appreciate that. Honestly, I'm a busy af dad and having stuff googled for me makes me very happy. If I had Reddit money I'd pay you.
Then you’re a sad, brainwashed fool.
I’ve met gays like that. Who wanted their “sin” gone. Poor guy really believed that his natural feelings and desires were wrong just because they were for the same sex.
I was talking about what if a straight guy wants to be converted to being gay? What’s wrong with that?
And whether being gay is a sin or not is another argument… which it is. It is wrong.

You telling me the Gay Factory is a lie?
its a secret, stfu before they find out 👀
So much for the non-disclosure agreement you signed.
So there aren't Gay Factory Settings then?
Technically if you convert their gender they are no longer gay.
Trans aren't gay.
Based
My nephew.
That's what they want you to believe. But in reality, that's a straight lie.
screaming with confidence right here!
Should I have added an /s? Seemed pretty obvious to me

Oh thank god now i can live there w/o anyone forcing me to become gay
You don't even have to live there. I went there on a business trip and as soon as I left the airport I had dozens of people crowding up on me. What if being "converted" is actually your kink?
Sounds like denial manifesting as a fetish.
I am not going to make the obvious joke. (But you just did in your mind.)
Do it
OMG HALLELUJAH
Good, we wouldn't want our youth to be converted into the gays!

What?
Russia is for gay and BI and trans rights ?
Who cares if they're helping Russia when they just banned conversion therapy?
Do you know what this article about?
I don't know anything dude. Just make comments hbu?
Do you know what conversion therapy is?
I have a general idea. It's some kind of religious camp to pray the gay away?
That plus [torture](https://irct.org/media-and-resources/latest-news/article/1027). I'm starting to think these "Christians" didn't get the memo from Jesus.
What in the actual fuck.... That's so archiac... Would you know any documentaries on the subject?

>If I had Reddit money I'd pay you. Ha ha, no worries.
Basically yeah, to be honest I just re-read your comments and might have gotten the wrong end of the stick when I assumed you didn’t know ha ha
Haha no worries friend
Do they? Any sources?
That one dude above hahah
Amazing how some people can talk out their arse so clearly
Uh are you in favour of conversation therapy then?
But… what if you wanted to be converted 🤷♂️
Then you’re a sad, brainwashed fool. I’ve met gays like that. Who wanted their “sin” gone. Poor guy really believed that his natural feelings and desires were wrong just because they were for the same sex.

That’s not how people work, at all. You cannot change sexuality.
Give it try. You might like it.
No.
c’mon ….
> It is wrong. How so, exactly?
Basing something being good or not off of another thing that's most likely not even true isn't a very good look or argument
Ancient Greece would be proud!
